The anniversary of the destruction of Dresden was annually marked with the performance of a requiem, until February 13, 1995. For the 50th anniversary of that terrible day, conductor Bernard Haitink presented Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony "Resurrection" – in the conviction that it is perhaps the only work in the symphonic repertoire that might do justice to the spirit of the day. In this, the live recording, the listener can sense something of the special atmosphere prevailing at that concert.

Disc 1
1. Allegro maestoso
2. Andante moderato
Disc 2
3. Scherzo
4. Urlich
5. Im tempo des Scherzos

Bernard Haitink – conductor
Charlotte Marigono – soprano
Jard van Nes – alt
Staatskapelle Dresden, Chorus of the Dresden State Opera, Dresden Symphony Chorus

Thank you tri2061990 for this post. This is one of my favorite Mahler symphonies and Haitink’s arrangements were always good although I prefer the quirky interpretations of Sir John Barbirolli especially the glacially-paced 6th Symphony on EMI. Speaking of the 6th, my first exposure to Mahler came in 1970 when a Pentecostal librarian in Placerville, California loaned me an LP of Mahler’s 6th by George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. After that first listening I was hooked.
