Give more time or even better allow thread creater to change the title

it’s freaking annoying that you cannot change the title of a created thread. you’re not given a 2nd chance to do so.

I’m not sure what time you mean but maybe this trick can be useful to test new threads or posts:

To avoid the risk of clicking by mistake the button to "Submit new thread" or "Submit reply" instead of the Preview button, you can do the tests in a PM sent to yourself. It needs the title too, so you can see if you have to shorten or adapt it; and if you send it by mistake, you just got a backup copy in your Inbox. When it’s ready you copy the code and insert it wherever needed, with a last Preview there to be sure.

Since the url for the thread includes part of the title, it’s not likely that its change will be allowed except to forum administrators in certain cases.

Edit: as a partial fix, you can change the title of the new post in advanced mode.

i use preview, but sometimes i miss the obvious errors in the title. that’s why a longer grave period, e.g. 15 minutes, needs to implemented.
if the thread creator can even change the title all the time, this would be so much better.

example: i add an album in mp3 and some time later i add the lossless version of it. now i can add the proper label in the title.

advanced mode doesn’t edit the actual thread title. this can only a moderator/admin do. hence my request to give the thread creator a bit more control of his/her thread.

As I re-edit my posts all the time, I wouldn’t vote against it, and being able to change the thread title would be very convenient to add a new encoding, though this would need it editable for longer than a few minutes. But surely there are other important points to consider in the internals of the database and the general working of the forum that don’t make it a good idea (otherwise it would have been implemented time ago for everyone and not only for admins).

If there is a big need, an admin can fix it, but I’m afraid that for now we’ll have to give ourselves the 15 minutes grace period before sending the definitive title.

Anyway, my provisional vote: yes.

I support a small extension of the… Err… "Edit time" (15 minutes is way too much, you don’t need that long), but I’m against giving users the option to change a thread’s title whenever they want; I’ve seen this at work multiple times and, well, suffice to say I’d rather not have it become a play thing for users here, too.

Regardless, I’d advise spending an extra bit of your time to spell-check everything, but I’d dare to say that it isn’t really an issue for Staffer(s) to occasionally fix typos and/or change titles, I don’t believe we get that many requests, at least. Plus, users on their side can show some more patience, it won’t kill any of you to perhaps wait a few days, in order to get your title changed.

My mistake. Sadly, I don’t know if that is an available option here at the Shrine, to my shame I’ve usually noticed my typos way too late to even bother. :/ I know for sure that at least a vBulletin board may have such feature, seen it at work in places which used an older version than the Shrine’s. Perhaps, it may be enabled, if it isn’t already. I used to think it was enabled by default.

I guess that, as you said, complete freedom to change the titles may have some bad effects; but the option to edit at any time the last characters (for example the rightmost 20 % of it) and to add anything there could be useful. That would allow the addition of a new audio format or to label the thread as [CLOSED], [SOLVED], etc. I don’t know if it’s an easy thing to do, though.

vbulittin or phpbb give the option for thread creator to change the title at any given time.

i’ve seen on another board and it works very well. user change the title when it’s needed.
if someone tries to troll with it, ban them – period of time or forever.

but you cannot give an option to just change a part of thread title. it’s all or nothing.
you can however add options to for [CLOSED], [SOLVED], etc.
the forum software supports that.

moderators having ability to doing rename now. can ask for rename and give thread link. usually good fast changing.
