They can afford that type of loss which just shows how much finacial backing they have. I`m pretty sure they don`t have to worry about going backrupt anyway.

Plus, this is Microsoft we’re talking about here…

oh, I agree completely.

I just think it’s sad this is the only way they can compete. 🙁

Yep. And they`ll always have that financial power, something that should make Sony feel nervous. Microsoft have the ability to keep themselves in the console war for many more gaming generations.

Microsoft Market Value: US$ 237 750 000 (Forbes 47)
Liquid Assets: US $64 940 000

Sony Market Value: US$ 35 400 000 (Forbes 123)
Liquid Assets: US$ 85 140 000

Keep in mind that Sony Computer Entertainment makes up exactly one half of Sony’s total operation. Microsoft Game Studios is only a small part of the Microsoft whole, and is probably very close to SCE in terms of assets. Sony could throw that sort of money around if they wanted to – and they probably will have to, to establish dominance in the next-generation.

Just thought i’d throw Nintendo’s figures as well, because they’re pretty impressive considering the company only does video games:

Market value: US $14 470 000 (Forbes 708)
Assets: US $9 590 000

If this were any other company losing $4 billion, they would be bankrupt. But on a more positive not, Bill Gates is slowly starting to lose his position as the world’s richest man. This year, the second-richest man in the world is only a few billion dollars away from him. Hurrah! (I don’t have anything against Bill though)
