FRED STEINER King Kong Question

Hi folks,

Does anybody has or listened the KING KONG (Max Steiner) recording conducted by Fred Steiner
It was released on Cd and LP long time ago.

Oh boys, I would love to have this one!

I remember the critics where�n very happy with this release because it used a new orchestration
a little different than the original.

I have the Southern Cross version, which has an identical track list and track times, implying it may be a reissue. I have compared it to the Marco Polo 22 track version, but I didn’t find anything particularly offense, (or even that different) from the 12 track one. Mainly where the tracks broke, but that is completely a matter of personal taste.

Issued by Southern Cross, this is a reissue of the 1976 rerecording by Fred Steiner.

The differences aren’t massive, but Steiner’s earlier recording did indeed make some instrumental substitutions and orchestration changes. The original 1932 orchestra was non-standard for the time (the inclusion of saxophones particularly unusual) and Christopher Palmer, for the Fred Steiner recording, took the opportunity to re-arrange the score for a more standard symphony orchestra.

Stromberg also re-orchestrated, but retained the original instrumentation and fleshed out the score according to Max Steiner’s original sketches.

The result is a more faithful reproduction of the score as it was written.

Fred Steiner’s is very good – but places orchestral homogeneity above historical authenticity – whereas Stromberg’s tries to remain as authentic as possible.

I understand Stromberg is planning on re-recording Kong again for his Tribute label… I know he was talking about this a year or so back… I wonder if it’s still on the cards? I wonder what one could possibly want to achieve that they didn’t already with the Marco Polo recording???

What can I say, I love this version with the Christopher Palmer orchestration. (Without saxophones)
