Final Fantasy I, NES Version Vs Final Fantasy I, PSX Version.

Probably not too fair to make a comparison, but I’m going to anyways.

I never got the chance to play the original Final Fantasy, with its 8 Bit Graphics and Sound, outside of playing the ROM (drops his voice to a whisper and coughs.) I never got past a certain part. I didn’t like how the game handled. I didn’t like the menu system, or the fact that the characters didn’t move to hit another enemy if the one you selected died before their turn.

Now turn to the Origins version of the game.

The graphics are better. There was no way Square was going to release 8 Bit Graphics in this day and age. The interaction in battles is a lot crisper and smoother. The music is a lot more melodic. You get to see the inside of shops and the inn.

I think that the new graphics and handling of the game improves it. It handles a lot better, the battles go quicker, and it’s easier to level up and to enjoy the game.

Do you prefer the original or the re-made version?

Call me nostalgic, but a part of me still perfers the NES original. There was a certain quaintness to the game, and the cheesy dialogue was something I’ll never forget! (particulary the immortal line uttered by Garland – "I Garland will knock you all down!!")

Although the PSX version is first rate, there are few little things in which I like the NES original better. The habit of renaming famous place names, for one – (‘Corneria’ becomes ‘Cornelia’, ‘Earth Cave’ becomes ‘Terra Cavern’, etc) got annoying, and the changed dialogue was also disappointing (especially the infamous line mentioend above being notably absent in this version!).

But the main thing I hated, was the greatly increased encounter rate! It seemed that I couldn’t go two feet without getting into a random battle, making exploring dungeons (especially the final dungeon) an absolute nightmare.

But these are minor gripes in what was an excellent package, and Square deserve to be congratulated for a first class effort of restoring this classic game. Just don’t be surprised if I actually finish the NES original instead though.

I got confused a few times, like when i was waiting for Garland to say his famous line or when i was talking to some mates about the game.

Like when i was talking to them about the Temple of fiends they were getting very confused until i remembered that in the Psone version it is called the temple of chaos.

Anyway i do prefer the PSone version but it gets annoying that square edited names and conversations.

In the NES version, in Elftown, Square made fun of Dragon Warrior’s character. In the PSX version, in ElfHEIM, they made fun of Nintendo’s Link. o_O;

Me, I’m always the one who perfers the version with the run function. Basically you will see me play the PSX version of any FF game rather than the original only because I can zoom through it faster. In FF1, I dropped it because it was simply too slow for my taste, same with FF2 and FF3. So then I picked up Origins knowing that they had run… so I rather get the PSX over it. o_O

Another thing I noticed…. that Puzzle game gives you tons more Gil than in the NES.

I think I perfer the NES version, probably because it was the first one I played when I was 6. I’d still like to get my hands on the NES cart again. ;_;

Anyway, when Merl and Mandi were visiting back in April for Sporkcon (PM if you wanna know what Sporkcon is), I decided to show Merl the game. We both kinda got upset with all the name changes. Merl noticed that especially with the enemies. 😛

I personally haven’t played FFO yet, but I’ve gone through FF1 for the NES soooo sooooooo many times it isn’t even funny. Probably the one thing I’m not going to like (and probably only play through with once just so I have) is the ‘easy’ setting, where the MP is drastically boosted. Kinda takes the challenge out of the game if you don’t have to actually think ‘mmkay, should I use a spell here, or hold on to it?’ having very limited magic made the game a lot harder strategy-wise, since you had to plan for times that you know you wouldn’t be able to be as free with magic. The name and script changes probably won’t bother me too much.

I prefer final fantasy I on..not PSX, not NES, but for the PC!

The shear fact that its NES Emulator means that your PC plays the game like a NES would, not a PC. The only thing I guess thats different between a NES and a NES Emulator is that with the Emulator you can take screenshots. But essentially a NES Emulator is in no way better than a real NES, not even loading times, because the NES was a cartridge based system loading times were non-existant (unless they were….I don’t actually have a NES myself)
