Hey, I’ve been struck by the desire to play my absolute favorite numbered FF game again, Final Fantasy V. I COULD play it on my SNES emulator but I’d rather have a console version. Is the Playstation version significantly better than the original SNES one? The PS one is on the PSN for 10 bucks, but I’d like to be able to take the game in my room. My WiiU gamepad can reach that far, and the SNES version is on the WiiU virtual console, probably for the same price or less. My question is, which one should I get? If the PS one isn’t that much better, graphically or gameplay or on sound, I’ll just go for the SNES version.

Also, first post! Hi all!

EDIT: Never mind. I didn’t read the whole article. It’s only on the virtual console in JAPAN because the SNES version was only done in Japanese…I hate you Square *cries and pulls up his SNES Emulator to play the Fan-lation*

Though I do wonder if the PS version still has terrible load times on if it’s…well…downloaded. No disc reading.

The PSX version does suffer from letterboxing and slight loading lag, especially in the PAL release, but as it’s the first ‘official’ release outside Japan, most players didn’t know any better.

Incidentally, Square’s old long defunct Washington-based US branch actually did attempt to release FFV in the US on the SNES circa 1994, under the somewhat ludicrous title of FF Extreme, but that never eventuated (apparently there was concern about the amount of memory required for translating the text into English would exceed what the SNES carts were capable of). In any event, FF Extreme was abandoned and the US had to wait to the FF Anthology re-release on the PSX in 1999 before they got their first taste of FFV.

PSN download of V and VI is definitely better (I did actual test them side by side). FFVI was way worse but they are both improved for PSN but not as good as the SNES. They are just ports with no differences really but not reading from the disc seems to help.

Umm… the GBA port is the best one. 🙂

The SNES/SFC version is better, no loading times , nostalgia , i never cared for FMVs anyways.

In terms of gameplay, sure, but you’re stuck having to play it on a handheld or with the adapter that plugs into the bottom of the Gamecube. I feel like the music generally sounds a lot better on the PSX version.

I own both the PlayStation version and SNES version , and like many said before the Anthology game has terrible loading and it doesn’t look as good on a 40" wide screen television (playing on the PS2) so I would have to say the SNES version is better or the GBA version for those who prefer the more modern translation of magi, weapons, script, etc.
