Okay, I’ve beaten Final Fantasy V and so I’ve been trying out some of the multiple endings. Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

Normal Ending

The one that probably most have seen. Cara (Kururu) writes the letter to Cid and Mid and everything’s generally back the way it was, although she’s still sad because Galuf is no longer around. So she visits the Elder Tree and says goodbye to Grandpa, but then her friends all join her and Galuf creates the field of flowers. Then they hear something, try to leave, and ride off on the Hiryuu and the chocobos.

With Kururu (Cara) Killed

I figured this one would be interesting, since I figured the default was probably for Kururu to write the letter if she was alive. In this case, Butz writes the letter and everything is about the same, except that he says that there’s no one to succeed the throne at Bal castle and when he talks about the chocobos, he says that "his good friend had children." At Cid and Mid’s, Mid asks what happened to Kururu and hers is the only gray flashback sequence we see. Cid asks if Mid heard something; he says that he head somebody say "your time hasn’t come yet." Then he himself goes off to the Eldest Tree, where he’s joined by his friends and he says that things just aren’t the same without Kururu. He then hears Galuf’s voice, who creates a shaft of light, filling the field with flowers and returns Kururu, saying her time hasn’t come yet. It’s all about the same from there.

With all except Faris Killed

Naturally, as the only party member left, Faris writes the letter to Cid and Mid. It’s very downbeat as she notes that though the retainer of Tycoon was happy to see her, he’s worried about Lenna. There’s nobody to succeed the throne and Bal Castle and Boco and Coco had children, but it’s a shame that Butz, the person who would really want to see that, isn’t there. At Cid and Mid’s we see the gray flashback sequences of Butz, Lenna and Kururu and then Faris goes to the Eldest Tree. She says that she misses Lenna and the others. Galuf returns them and it’s all about the same from there.

Well, that’s all I’ve seen for right now. Anyone else see any of these multiple endings?

Hehe, yes, the first time I opened the game with a hex editor once and read all the texts… I was quite confused… as far as I remember, there are quite a lot of variations.

A friend of mine had the ending with all characters well and alive.

I myself had Faris missing and returning. Does anybody know what triggers this… how the characters are chosen? I dont remember what happened during my final battle…

Yeah, sure, I’ll explain it. It’s completely depending on who’s standing when you defeat Neo-XDeath. If nobody’s either K’Oed (wounded), zombied, or petrified, then you get the normal ending. However, suppose you defeated Neo-XDeath with everyone but alive. Then, here’s how it happens: when the Hiryuu appears to take them all back to their world, Kururu says that she feels really sleepy and a message appears, "I guess they used up all their power in that battle." She’s then sucked toward the void and everybody else rides back on the Hiryuu but her. Same for any other characters, anybody that was K’Oed, zombied, or stoned says that they’re sleepy and then gets sucked back. The ending is then different based on that. When you get to the part where one of the party members decides to go to the Eldest Tree, Galuf returns any party member that you lost, saying "Your time hasn’t come yet."

BTW, I’ve figured out that there are actually a total of 15 different combinations:

– Everybody Alive
– Everybody Except Butz Alive
– Everybody Except Kururu Alive
– Everybody Except Faris Alive
– Everybody Except Lenna Alive
– Nobody But Butz Alive
– Nobody But Kururu Alive
– Nobody But Faris Alive
– Nobody But Lenna Alive
– Butz and Lenna Alive
– Butz and Kururu Alive
– Butz and Faris Alive
– Lenna and Kururu Alive
– Lenna and Faris Alive
– Kururu and Faris Alive

There’s no reason why it shouldn’t work with the PSX version. So I’d say, yes.
