Good question, I think the answer is to learn all of the correlating percentage bonuses ie STR+20/40% for the STR bonus. I could be very wrong. Hope that Agent0042 pops into this thread, he seems to know more than anyone around here.

Last time i checked my FF8 game, only Ifrit and Cactuar learn str bonus, and only cactuar learns HP bonus, but you don’t really need either if you stock up on spells and junction them to strength and HP. Powerful magic spells work well for strength (like Tornado, flare, meteor, any -aga spells and holy) while good healing ones work well for HP (Life, Curaga, Full-life) and Ultima does well for both.

If the idea is to raise the base numbers as much as possible, from as early as possible in the game, the fact that GF Eden and Quistis’s Shockwave Pulsar are the only attacks capable of inflicting more than 9,999 damage renders the process of raising STR pointless would it not? Being that they both come under Magic strength, or am I wrong?

Doesn’t the Cactuar GF have every stat bonus ability learned automatically?
Jarosik — yeah, I guess that’s true. You would want to raise the Magic stat.
P.S.: If you really feel like upping the stats even more and your levels are already maxed out, Eden’s Devour ability can be used on cerrtain enemies for stat bonuses.

that sounds cool, but how does it work exactly. You just get bonuses for devouring certain enemies or what?

I never really exploited it much myself, so lemme check that…
Try the Devour Guide in the FFVIII section at GameFAQs — http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/game/197343.html
It has a lot of good info on that. But basically, you Devour an enemy and it increases a stat by 1 point, permanently.
