I’ve read a lot of manga, but (don’t laugh) I just found out that there are different types of manga. So can any of you tell me all the different types of manga. I know one…shojo… but I want to know what it means.
Also, what are your favorite types?

‘Shojo’ is Japanese fpr ‘girl’, and describes manga made mainly for girls. So expect romance, bishies, and innocent little school girls as protagonists. Examples…? Fushigi Yuugi, or the omnipresent Sailor Moon.
The… erh, opposite would be ‘shonen’, which means ‘boys’: Manga made for young boys, example Yuyu Hakusho, Naruto etc etc. You often find a lot of action in these series, and stuff like friendship, growing up…

These two are probably the two big, best-known types. However, its not often that clear if a manga is ‘shonen’ or ‘shojo’, and even if it is, you often find boys reading shojo manga, or girls adoring ‘shonen’ manga. Like me. o_O

Theres also this stuff called hentai… Whats the best description? Porn?
Then theres ‘shonen-ai’ and yaoi: stories featuring love between men… (yaoi being the more explicit version, if I am not mistaken… I am not that much of an expert on that field).
The same kind of stories only with women would be called ‘yuri’, again, if I am not mistaken…

And now I will leave it to others to fill any gaps I left. I sure left some.

Oh… and like I said: I prefer shonen manga, although Im also open to shojo. Its just that silly love stories easily piss me off. Gah. Another factor is that I just dont like the way most shojo manga are drawn, those big eyes, little back ground, and no need for anatomy. Talk about Clamp.
Ive found shonen manga to offer me better art, more interesting stories, more interesting characters… yeah, and action.

Yep, Misao is spot on.

There’s Shoujo for girls, Shounen for boys, Shounen-Ai which is implied homosexuality, Yaoi which is guyXguy, and Yuri which is girlXgirl… then of course there’s all out hentai.

I like most types (Bar full out hentai), but prefer Shoujo and Shounen-Ai. Most Shounen is stuff like Dragonball Z, Naruto, Hunter X Hunter and stuff.
