Renato (Lino Capolicchio) is a young man full of lusions and a big fan of Maria Callas, whose posters adorn her room. But his great obsession is Elena (Silvana Mangano), rich business woman, separated from her husband, mature woman, disappointed and free-spirited. Unable to take charge of her own emotional state, Elena abandons Renato and he, tormented, commits suicide.

At Renato’s house they meet and stay for a long time, young boys and girls: the couple Enzo-Leila (he is a former porn movie actor, she, a singer without success), Eddy and Tea (passionate she, cynical he who wants getting married because he has made her pregnant, but then Tea aborts, and becomes Enzo’s partner in a new porn film). In those meetings they talk, venture into long dialogues about nature, about fashions, and about the provisional nature of love.

This is a love story told in flashback for the most part. The axis of the story is Elena Davison, who remembers the stages of relations with Renato, and the conversation with Eddy trying to understand the reasons that have pushed Renato to suicide. She is devastated to feel responsible for the tragedy.
