"the great dream of white paradise"

We came here to find
the great dream of white paradise

We drove for miles
and arrived at the white beach.

We stood and waited
for what we sought,
like a proud woman waiting
for her love who was late…

but all to be seen was dark and biege,
and stubby and ugly.
Brown faces stumbled
and shuffled by us, strange
tribal music played about us

…and the people of flowing blond hair,
beautiful people in wetsuits,
skimming along the water
balancing on the surfboards
with their long feet and limbs,
they were no more
even before we came

Whatever had happened here
that brought us to California in the first place
…I think we missed it.
