The 1960 film version of "Can-Can" was not very successful compared to other big budget musical films of the period. The Cole Porter score was not one of his best but did include the standard "I Love Paris" & the hauntingly beautiful ballad It’s Alright with me". The weakest thing about the stage version was Abe Burrows’ book and the screenplay by Dorothy Kingsley & Charles Lederer greatly improved on the play by eliminating a boring secondary love story and expanding the role of the older judge for the wonderfully cast Maurice Chevalier as a voice of reason for Philippe, played by the perfectly cast Louis Jourdan. The newly created for the film role of Francois gave the show what it lacked on Broadway, a genuinely interesting love triangle with Simone in the middle. Unfortunately the decidedly un-French Frank Sinatra & Shirley MacLaine cast in these roles stood out like sore thumbs against the gorgeous Montmartre settings of 1896 Paris and interacting with the genuinely French Chevalier & Jourdan. Five totally forgettable songs were cut from the Broadway version and the film interpolated three Porter standards, "Let’s Do It", "Just One of Those Things" & "You Do Something to Me". The spectacular "Garden of Eden" Ballet was retained and of course the climatic Can-Can Quadrille. The Capitol Records soundtrack album from "Can-Can" was a paltry 30 minutes and included only the basic songs and very little of the dance music. This is most unfortunate since the one other thing besides the script that is a leaps and bound improvement over the stage version are the lush arrangements by the great Nelson Riddle played by the magnificent 65 piece Fox Studio Orchestra at its peak.

Below is a link to a high resolution Flac file of the original soundtrack sessions from "Can-Can", including complete versions of the songs (including the uncut duet of "I Love Paris" by Sinatra & Chevalier deleted from the general release print of the film), all of the dance music including "The Garden of Eden Ballet" plus some dramatic and source scoring (but unfortunately missing the choral part of the finale), all mastered from the original multi track vocal and music separations and completely free of all dialogue or Foley effects. The stage and film versions of "Can-Can", for different reasons, may not be top drawer Cole Porter, but this complete soundtrack separated from the flawed 1960 film makes a good case for revisiting its score.
