He hasn’t gone away. Just keeps milking his farewell performance. Like Cher. 😉

Though sonically better, this rerecording as opposed to the OLD re-recording is very lackluster. Again, Marco Polo recordings tend to be paint-by-the numbers and result in these lifeless, disinterested musical results. Even the choir seems to be reading magazines while singing in a bored fashion.

Wonder how it compares to the 24-Track FSM version (to which I have a variable mixed bag, 224, 243, 256 & 320k…)

Thank You, Mr. Yannis, Sir! 🙂

I have to agree here. I never understood what drew Stromberg & Co to Moscow, except budgetary considerations. The pretext that they gave them the "classic Hollywood sound" not found elsewhere is betrayed by the actual, mediocre results. They did get better later (the Tribute recordings, presumably with more rehearsal time than what Naxos’s parsimonius Klaus Heymann would pay for), but still.

I complained heavily when Stromberg & Co tried their hand at Victor Young. Especially a re-recording of of THE UNINVITED.

First, it did not contain all the music from the film, so why even bother? They filled out the disc with two other Young scores (incomplete) and one was of no merit.

Second, even Gramaphone Magazine stated the music had a tentative quality that let one wanting.

Third, when confronted with the fact that the solo piano lacked volume and enthusiasm (I mean for cryin’ out loud, the opening passages are much akin to a piano concerto!), Stromberg said the Russian pianist was very nervous and struggled with the work. Well… get another pianist!!!!

As far as The Egyptian is concerned, the 1954 may have the sound quality of being recorded in the men’s room at a bus station, but the orchestra and chorus perform like they MEAN IT and FEEL it. This new recording has better sound quality but remains a dead otter in the moonlight.
