Have a listen to Britten’s version https://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1375960 one of my favourites.I have owned and enjoyed Britten’s revolutionary (for its time) recording for a number of years, but I find the present Egarr/AAM recording to be much more refined, better recorded, and also better performed (not to take anything away from Britten and the ECO).

Thank you bobtheknob for another of your many great posts. Although I feel Karl M�nchinger and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra are the nonpareil for Bach orchestral interpretation I will give this recording a listen.

The Dunedin doesn’t have quite as full a sound and also has less bass response from the continuo. In addition, the ensemble overall is just slightly more constricted sounding, which takes away some of the marvelously natural-sounding clarity that is such a hallmark of the Egarr/AAM recording. It seemed like the Dunedin recording was miked rather closely, as if I’m either sitting in the very front row or perhaps even standing at the very foot of the stage. With Egarr, however, it seems like I’m about 10 rows or so back from the stage, which is just about perfect.

The quality of the two performances seems very similar, with both groups doing a terrific job, so I’d have to give the edge to the Egarr/AAM recording on the basis of better sound.

Well, I prefer that type of sound. To me the Dunedin recording has more detail and separation, the sound is clearer. The AAM has too much bass and reverb, the sound is more blurred/soft. I’ve read that in some reviews too:

I will readily agree, however, that in the absence of the Egarr recording, I would certainly be very happy with the Dunedin Consort version.
