Note: after the release of Varese’s very nice box set for the expanded scores of the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, it was only a matter of time before I would be doing another one of these projects. The tone this go around is more directly horror which means I went more for drawn out moments of suspense rather than going for an all-out orchestral attack on the senses but those moments are still present because I love action music and all the suspense has to build up to something.

The piece that ultimately got me started on this was another memorable Christopher Young composition from the Nightmare on Elm Street 2 score entitled "Suite Dreams" which is exclusive to the Varese box set. If you haven’t had a chance to hear it yet, it’s easily one of my favorite suites ever mixed and I can’t recommend it enough. A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 was a HUGE inspiration to this project.

As is customary with my projects, if I use Christopher Young’s music for one of these then I can’t go without using a little Beltrami. Penderecki felt a little too dark for this so there’s no Penderecki included this go around. Yet, anyway.

Since I didn’t have a clear vision or direction for this project, I am open to editorial suggestions and even cue selection. This began as a 30 minute suspense piece for Victor Salva but escalated into something else. Since I will be attending the filming of Jeepers Creepers 3 next month, I included some hidden Bennett Salvay tracks as a little Easter Egg.

I’m experiencing a little bit of mixer’s block so feel free to comment some of your suggestions below.

This may not be the last version you hear but it is the first version I feel comfortable enough posting. Some layering choices are obvious while others blend into the flow of the piece that you’d have to go back and hear the original pieces to discover that those little editorial touches weren’t in the original recordings. This is what makes music the most fun for me: finding two completely different pieces and blending them to sound like they were intended this way. While not exactly original, it gives me an idea of the mixing process for film scores in regards to layering.

The title comes from the song "Jeepers Creepers" but as is the trend with my imagination, it sends my imagination off to its own idea. They say the eyes are the window to the soul but what if they are a door to hell?

Enjoy!
