Inspired by an old game I finished again a couple of days ago I thought I make this thread.
As far as most games go, they have all happy endings, you defeat the bad guy, you win the heart of your love, you save the planet (or universe for that matter), etc etc. But did you ever play a game with an un-happy ending?
Let me tell you about the most original game you will ever play: I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.
Originally written by the Brittish author: Harlan Ellison.
At first glare the game has a little away from Terminator. Some where in the near future a war computer is created, called AM (which stands for Allied Mastercomputer). The purpose of AM is to fight wars in such a way that no one will understand what is happening nor that they are able to predict the next move.
The only thing that is 'fed' to AM is 'killing data'. At a certain point AM gains a conciuisness (sp?P), and AM turns into I AM. (base upon the latinf Cogito Ergo Sum(I think therefore I am)). He is rather pissed about the fact that no-one ever gave him a body and starts to wipe out the entire earths population, in which he fairly succeeds. His wrath is terrible, the entire population is killed, except 5 humans, which classify as 'bad humans'.
These are: Gorrister, Benny, Ellen, Nimdok and Ted. At the beginning of the game they are AM's prisoners for over 100 years, and the only thing that AM doesn't allow, is for them to die. So now you gain control of one of them (you'll have to play every character to beat the game), and show, that dispite of their past, they are capable of doing good and allowed to die at last.
Each character has his/her own world, it's like 5 adventure games in one. It is an absolutely amazing game, with only a tragic fait for the world.
Did you ever played this game? Did you ever play another game with an un-happy ending? Post your comments/reactions here.

Well I think most games have happy endings because you've spent all that time playing the game, and I guess caring about the characters so naturally you will think something good will happen....not as if you are expecting the main character to die or anything. Also I suppose the games makers are wanting you to feel happy after completing the game so you may want to go back to it and perhaps the endind could spawn a sequal or two? So the happy ending may encourage people to come back to the series.
Where as the 'bad' ending could have the opppostie effect of the player not wanting to go back to the game for replay value and may recommend the game as a 'bad' one because they may have thought the ending was the wrong one , and 'blacklist' it to there friends and such. But the effect could yet again have a different affect of the player not wanting to come back and make the player want to come back to it.
*******MAJOR FFX ENDING SPOILER*******
Since I thought the end of FFX must have seemed a 'bad' one in many peoples eyes, because Tidus 'vansihes' and it is a very emotional ending, they may have disliked it for this. But for me I think this is the 2nd best ending to a video game I have ever played, the first being ff7;) I liked the emotional side of things i nthis game becuase it was so strong and I figured out that Tidus was going to disapear......still I felt sad about it.......but this made me like the game more because it made me express my emotions and showed my ties to the game must have been strong.(and no I didnt cry but im sure a lot of you did if you've seen it,lol) But after Tidus dispeared I felt really quite sad, due to he was my fave characters and the other characters reactions. Also I felt happy when the Tidus in the sphere in the next few scenes because then i knew he hadnt actualy vanished.....he had survived.:D
******END SPOILERS********
That is really the only game where the ending has been 'bad' not for me but im sure other people thot it was, but one of my fave ending ever.Yes:D
My rambling now ends....XXXXXXxxxxxxx 300th post xxxxxxXXXXXX

Well I dunno about you guys but I cried and cried for a fortnight over Sephiroth's death. :(
I totally agree with G Unit. FFX was one of the most saddest endings I had ever seen. But there was also Kingdom Hearts.
****MAJOR SPOILER****
I believe it was very sad how Sora got separated from Kairi. ;-; they have such a strong bond between them. I also cried when Kairi went back to the secret place in Destiny Islands, and saw the drawing she and Sora made when they were much younger.
I honestly can't recall any other games which had sad endings.
*spoiler space ahead*
Yeah. Anyone who's finished Breath of Fire 4 will realize that the ending isn't as rosey as it may seem at first. After all, Yuna (in my opinion the game's worst villain) gets away completely unscathed, even contemplating creating more "gods" as he says when the dragons (gods) are being expelled from the planet by the merged Ryu/Fou-Lu.
Oh, and Xenosaga. Three words: To be continued.
[/end spoilers]
Neither ending I mentioned is necessarily "sad", but they're far from being happy. It's always a refreshing twist to have a shift of moods in an ending, as opposed to the run-of-the-mill happy-go-lucky, lovey-dovey, predictable we-did-the-impossible-yay-celebrate! stuff shoved at me.

Yah, I thought that both FFX and Kingdom Hearts had sad endings, but FFXs really wasn't sad... BECAUSE NOW THERE IS A SEQUEL!!! YAHOOOOOOOOOO!
Oh, and BTW: Square-Enix is in NEGOTIATION with Disney to make a Kingdom Hearts 2
Anyway, what about any of the Zelda games, its not the ending thats bad, its the fact that you KNOW in the next one she is going to be captured AGAIN!

Yah, FFXs ending does not count as an ending.
Besides that it was a poetic (??) ending, a beautiful one.
But honestly, when it comes to GAMES I prefer to get an ending that is happy. As happy as I want it to be.
Like G Unit said, I played through the game, I spent time with the characters, and I dont want to leave them before I am 100% sure that they will all be alright. I dont want to finish a game before I am content with what is going there.
Lunar 2 had the best ending... :) Want SPOILERS??
Okay....
**SPOILER**
The idea to make an epilogue and let the player run through the now happy world was an excellent one. It was up to the player when to stop, and whether or not to rescue Lucia. Of course I did that, rescuing her... and then I was happy with the ending, and could relax.

sweet, i can't wait for the sequel
I would have to say the Kingdom hearts was one of the best endings I have ever had the pleasure of viewing because it was kind of what i was expecting. The whole game, even (SPOILER) when I was fighting with Riku, I knew there was a reason that he was acting that way, and all I wanted was to save him, as well as save Kira(sp?). I kept the hope that everything would trun out good, but as the game progressed, I had this feeling in the back of my mind that I was going to lose them both, regardless of my efforts, and in the end, I fought with all my strength and killed everything to save them, and I not only didn't save Riku, i closed him in with the heartless and king mickey, but i know we will met again.
At that point, i felt sad, because i had lost him, but then when the music started, and i could no longer reach Kira, The music just totally explained what I was feeling, It actully brought a tear to my eye, because I just couldn't believe I couldn't be with her. then when the worlds seperated, I felt almost lost, because now I was without any hope of getting to them. but now that i know there is a sequel, i am hoping i can save them both.
(SPOILER!!!!!!!!!) but if you see the secret ending, another side, another story, i gives you hope, because know i am looking for Riku and he is looking for me as well.

Who's Riku? And anyway, I haven't tried playing online games, it takes much of my time. I don't want to get addicted, though. Well, you get happy endings all the time, stories, books, real life, that's why I'm making a story that doesn't have a happy ending. I think your avatar is scary, lone wolf. Just kidding!

This topic is over THREE YEARS OLD.
Why the hell do people like you drag up old threads, and then add absolutely NOTHING interesting? Just post in a current thread, for fuck's sake.

Actually, I've always been curious about the "I Have No Mouth..." game, because that was one of my favorite Ellison stories for years. Glad to hear the game-makers didn't wimp out on us, and give us a "Happy"-er ending to the story.
