This is a tough list to make, there are simply so many great games out there.

Heroes of Might and Magic 2 or 3 (I can't decide which one I like more)
Gran Turismo 2
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy Tactics

All great games which I have spent way too many hours wasting my life on.

Certain games have made and remained in my top 5 for years, some even switching positions with each other. Yup, video game wars inside my head.

Final Fantasy X
Vagrant Story
Final Fantasy VII
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

#5: I can't be bothered fighting myself over it, so hurray for:

Super Mario World/AllStars, FFVI and Zelda: Link to the Past.

How seemingly random..

Okay, trying to scrape them together from the back of my head...

5.) Shining Force 2. The game that got me into RPGs. An absolutely stunning storyline. An absolutely breath-taking experience. An absolutely annoying puzzle that I could not work out for my life for all of two weeks (but you must be able to put the piece of wood into the hole in the tree!!!) I bought a Sega Megadrive for a small period of time, and this game made that purchase worthwhile.

4.) Metal Gear. No, not Metal Gear Solid. No, not Metal Gear Solid 2. The first and original Metal Gear. Includes one of the single, greatest plot twists ever right at the end of the game, one that had me as a 12 year old kid going "WOAH!!! THAT'S AWESOME~!"

3.) Suikoden. The first one. Okay, the graphics look crappy. Okay, the main character couldn't run anywhere, but it's one of the only RPGs that has held me to play it through more than twice. I fell in love with the characters and the simple idea of fighting for what you believe in.

2.) Final Fantasy VII. Simply awesome. The game held my attention from the middle of Year 11 until the end of sixth form and even a bit beyond. Three years of solid gameplay to strive to get my characters as levelled up as I could. And even now I stick pick it up to go about the Gold Saucer. Classic, absolute classic... I thought this game would never be replaced...

AND AT NUMBER 1!!!!!!!!

...

I'll tell you later.

...

Okay, I'll tell you now.

1.) The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. If I could find just one word to describe this game, I would be a very happy man. Alas, I cannot find it. This game totally consumed my life for four months whilst I was sat at home during the summer last year working for a living. My life kind of got paused. I'd get up for work at 6.30am, I'd start work at 8am, I'd finish work at 4pm, I'd get home at 4.30pm. I'd have dinner, have a wash, and by then it would be 5.00pm. Check the E-mails (maybe) and then onto the computer for Morrowind action until 11pm. Longer on weekends. There is nothing like exploring a cave, slaying the occupants, stealing the treasure, selling the more worthless stuff, getting cooler armour, getting stronger, opening up a very straight forward, but still rewarding, storyline. This game is a must play for any who like Zelda styley exploration slash slash RPGs.

Edit:- Typos, and some worthy mentions. Suikoden 2 was as enjoyable as the first one. Wild Arms had the best love story ever, in my opinion. (One that I shall replay through just to watch it unfold again, I think.) Super Mario Bros 3, the first console game I ever completed, and Maniac Mansion for sheer comic hilarity in places. And Super Mario Kart for simple, yet very fun, racing.

2. Final Fantasy 7 (Playstation)

i have not seen a lot from most of these games you put on here, like only some of FF XII, but it looked good i must say.

1) Zelda OoT
2) Perfect Dark
3) Mario for SNES
4) DKC for SNES
5) Maybe my Golden Sun

in no particular order either*

about Morrowind: Elder Scrolls...........i am borrowing it right now and frankly it bores me to death. maybe it is because of the battle system, not sure.

5. Chrono Trigger-SNES/ WWE:SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth- Ps2. Chrono Trigger had me blown away, but it lost me again after a little while, for some reason, and I do not really want to see if I can advance from the state I am in in the game :-/
It was still -very- enjoyable.
SmackDown! 4 is the best wrestling/fighting game I have ever tried. Very detailed :)

4. MegaMan 2- NES. Together with Super Mario Bros. 3, this is probably the game I've spent most time with.
At the time I was playing both games, MegaMan was my favourite game, and one of the games that I play on a daily basis, even if I'd just gotten a new game :) The music should really be rereleased, it rules alll...

3. Final Fantasy 8. After playing Final Fantasy 7, I had huge hopes for FF8. And it didn't let me down, at all. I was just as blown away by this one, even though FF 7 is overall better, and has more good elements, in my opinion.
This game had a fantastic atmosphere, and that is one of the main reasons it is my number 3 pick. The idea of being a SeeD ruled, too :)

2. Final Fantasy 7. A game that I had hyped so much in my mind, and a game that did not let me down. The story, characters, music and pretty much everything was top notch.
Definetely a game I will remember for a long time to come :)

1. Super Mario Brothers 3 for the NES :)
First game I ever tried, probably the game I played the most, and definitely the game I have had the best times with. It's too bad that I cannot remember the events back then very clearly :(
But I do remember loving it, and I still do!

1. Breath of Fire IV
I liked this game because it had Fou-Lu, a fun battle system, fishing, hunting, and the best town builder.

2. Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
This had the best battle system, good music, a twisted change in the story compared to the other 4. Ryu's power makes him insane, want to kill people for not giving information. The Dragons destroyed the world instead of protecting it. It's very difficult. And a fun town building system that is realistic.

3. FFVII
This needs no explination.

4. Chrono Trigger
This is an addictive game allround. 15 ending to grab, and a great game.

5. Diablo II
Holy Christ, this definatly needs no explination.

Ok then...

1) Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Because it has an excellent storyline and you can just play it for hours and days on end. A brilliant game.

2) Final Fantasy VII - The best Final Fantasy game of all time. Also a great storyline and you can play it for weeks on end trying to get everything.

3) Super Smash Brothers - The best fighting game ever. 4 player simultanious fighting action including Nintendo's best characters. The sequel is good, but the originals always win.

4) Sonic 3 and Knuckles - My personal favourite sonic game. Where you connect Sonic 3 to Sonic and Knuckles and play a 14 level game with Sonic and Tails, Sonic alone, Tails alone or Knuckles alone. The storyline and levels change with different characters.

5) Worms - This game amused my for ages. Make your own team of 4 worms and destroy other teams of 4 worms with clasic weapons such as Banana Bombs, Bazookas, Kamikaze and of course, my favourite. PROD! Where push them slightly into the water.

PC games:

1. Europa Universalis II - As a history major in college, I absolutely LOVE this game/concept. Pick a medieval nation (doesn't even have to be a European nation, despite the title) and guide it through 400 years of war, chaos, rebellion, etc. There are a lot of user mods and add-ons as well, for even more variety.

2. Civilization 2 - The classic turn-based strategy game. I enjoyed this one even better than Civ 3. Civ 3 to me was just Civ 2 with fancier graphics (and more bugs).

3. Talonsoft's Campaign Series (technically more than one game, but they're all basically identical so I listed them all as one) - If you like WW2 strategy games, this series is definately worth a look. Lots of campaigns and scenarios available on the internet as well, so replay is almost endless.

4. Combat Mission (there are two in this series but I've only ever played one of them. However, since they both have the same gameplay system, I've listed them both together) - Another good WW2 strategy game, on a much smaller and more detailed scale than the Campaign Series. This game features individual squads and platoons for more fast-paced action.

5. Baldur's Gate series (again, more than one, so I lumped them together) - The only RPG games I play on the PC. A good character development system, a decent storyline, and good graphics. The only major drawback would be replayablity. The story remains the same no matter what your character class/alignment is.

Console games:

1. Final Fantasy 6/3 - The best RPG ever made (I never played Chrono Trigger, but I've heard strong arguments made for it. Until I play CT, FF3/6 will remain #1), played on possibly the best gaming system ever made (in terms of game variety and longevity). The graphics are outdated now when compared to today's gaming systems, but the storyline and cast of characters still remain the best I've ever encountered in a Final Fantasy game. Not to mention that it's one of the few FF games I've actually finished. :p

2. Winning Eleven 6 (International) - If you like football (soccer), then you'll love this game. FIFA may have better graphics but this game blows FIFA away in gameplay and (especially important) realism. You can actually play possession football, and you can actually head the ball, neither of which you can do in FIFA.

3. NCAA football (insert year) - The 2004 version is coming out in about 3 weeks, and I'll definately be picking up a copy. College football fans should definately check this one out. Dynasty mode rocks.

4. New Horizons - Another RPG made for the SNES, with a historical flair. Obsolete graphics but good gameplay and storylines (you can play as multiple characters).

5. Final Fantasy Tactics - Except for those two maddeningly frustrating battles (which resulted in a broken controller, bruised knuckles and days of frustration), an all-around good game. The class system made this one replayable. The storyline was good, though once you played the game through one time you knew what was going to happen.

1= Final Fantasy 8, I know alot of people who dislike this game, but I just love it!

2= Silent Hill 2, GREAT game!

3= Final Fantasy 7, it has such a good storyline.

4= Vandal Hearts, It's a very old game, but I still love it!

5= Metal Gear Solid, dunno what to say! Just love it!

My five favourite games are :

5> Asterix on the Megadrive. I'm a big fan of the comic strip Asterix, and the game was pretty good as well.

4> The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past. This game was pure brilliance. It stands out, to me that is, as the best Zelda game ever. I'm not a big fan of the N64 (I blame the Evangelion game and all of the Pokemon games and such. I really disliked that particular console.)

3> Final Fantasy VIII. This was the first FF game I ever played, so I guess I'm biased as to which FF game I like the best.

2> Headhunter. Even though I only have the PS2 version of this Dreamcast port, it is a good game.

And finally,

1> Syndicate. Even though this is an old game, it still is a classic. Controlling a group of trenchcoated cyborgs, armed to the teeth, running around cities, blowing stuff up, somehow this appeals to me. Probably why I'm alwas playing it, and Death's Head keeps asking me to return it. I ma do so, one of these days.

1) SSX Tricky. I love this game with all the insane tricks and extreme rivalry. Each time I race is usually a different experience! It's funny how as I'm in the middle of a race, there's a bunch of people who can care less about the race and would now want to get revenge at me for knocking them down a lot... SSX3 is gonna be awesome!

2) Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2. One of the greatest, if not the greatest, racing games out there. I like this game much more than Gran Turismo 3. (I fall asleep when playing GT3 sometimes...). Driving a Ferrari through a variety of different courses, each pretty long, with a bunch of cops chasing you, setting up roadblocks, and calling the helicopter to shoot missiles and throw bombs at you, there's no greater experience, except doing it in real life. But I think owning an actual Ferrari is better...

3) SimCity 3000 Unlimited. My first and only SimCity game. I love it except the stupid parades drag, especially when I'm trying to get some work done around my city. I keep my World Trade Center Towers in a nice spot nearby my house... :)

4) Final Fantasy IX. I like the ability and experience system in this FF. Plus it has two of my all-time favorite characters in it. Can you guess? They're Vivi and Eiko! I also like my other FF's, FFVII, FVIII, an FFX as much too!

5) Streets of Rage series. I loved all of these games. Unfortuately, I dunno wheremy Sega Genesis is right now so I probably will never be able to play them again. Unless someone would make a PS2 version...

5. Rystar - This was a really good platformer. Nobody else remembers it, but it really was awesome. :)

4. Toejam & Earl 2 - Another brilliant platformer that probably nobody remembers. TJ & Earl were just great, for too many reasons to list. :) And it had a lot of replay value, the dialogue was hilarious.

3. Final Fantasy 7 - I doubt I need to say why.

2. Grandia - Really great RPG. The characters make the game. The battle system was also quite unique.

1. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 - The BEST Sonic game EVER. :D I did nothing but play this as a kid. :) I know all the levels off by heart. I was an obsessive little bastard. But Sonic 2 really was something else.

Ok, a question for everyone who listed FF7? Why like a game that has the same good qualities as almost every other RPG but inferior in almost every way?

EDIT: I said less inferior.

*just shakes his head*

You people make me sick...

#1 - A tie between Dragon Warrior (Quest) I and Dragon Warrior 4 (both for the NES). HOW could none of you have mentioned either of those games? First off, the original is pretty much what started all RPGs everywhere. In all actuality, it inspired Final Fantasy. The reason the 4th instalment in the series is right up there as well is because the story is so involved that this simple 8-bit cartridge contains more hours of gameplay than the latest 3 FF's combined.

#2 - Someone else said it and I agree. Mega Man 2. It really is the best game in the series, at least in my opinion. All the games after this don't really have a plot, just go shoot the robots and use their abilities after they die. I can't really say Mega Man I either because well, the game sucked ass... I know because I have it. The only other game in the series that comes close in comparison is Mega Man Soccer, and let me tell you THAT is a hella fun sports game. Anyway, Mega Man 2 also had Metal Man... nuff said...

#3 - Altered Beast. This was WAAAAY back when the Genesis was the "in" system. It was also one of the most entertaining games I've every played, maybe because it was kind of like Ghouls and Ghosts except that you were the ghoul...or the ghost... Either way it was great seeing my human character suddenly become this panther like THING and rip apart the enemies faster than a hot knife through butter. Now, if only D2 could get the druid to do the same...

#4 - Quest 64... Ok ok, I'm kidding... Real answer, The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time. This game made up for that pitiful excuse for an RPG I mentioned first (though if you play it long enough you DO get pretty into it). Anyway, TLZ:TOT set the standard for next gen. systems as far as RPGs go and it also lived up to the series by driving you crazy while you're trying to find that LAST heart piece that is in the bottom of a damn hole stuck in the middle of nowhere that you can only find by randomly bashing the ground with your hammer! *takes a deep breath* I'm ok...I'll...be ok... Oh, I will say this though... The last boss was hella lame...

#5 - I'm tempted to say a Mario game here, but really they all pretty much suck... Well, excpet Dr. Mario, but no one ever plays that because they have Tetris. I think I'll go with Lufia. One of the few RPGs that I didn't MIND having a crappy and predictable ending (lets face it, don't they all have them?). It was just a really entertaining game and what REALLY made me like it is the battle system and the way they show exp/gold/items/other crap after battle. Very cool way to work it... I must say.

Honorable Mentions:

Cave Man Games for the NES: It is by far the CRAPPIEST game EVER made in the history of gaming. But...it's funny as hell when you play it.

Diablo II: Simply because I don't think there is a game I've played for a longer period of time than this one, too bad the patch is going to ruin that streak (thanks blizz!).

Blaster Master: Most of you have probably never even heard of it. It's a heart warming story about a boy that has to beat the crap out of his pet frog to survive, fun huh?

Eh... that's good I suppose...

Holy crap......:notgood:

Dragon Warrior is not the first electronic RPG, it didn't even set the standard for FF. Dungeons & Dragons was making games on Atari, and Might Magic was on Atari too. Those set the standards for RPGs that came after.

marquisscissorman

How come I cannot play NES RPG's any more? I used to play Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior as a little kid all the time. Now, I can barely stomach the opening screen thing.

I hate any game where you have to open the game menu up to go down stairs. :\

I also believe that DW inspired FF, though.

Those weren't what most would define as "RPG's" though.

EDIT: And actually, now that I think about it the "Dungeons & Dragons" along with the "Might & Magic" games for the Atari were more like the board game "Hero's Quest" where EVERYTHING is based upon the role of a dice, and really...that's not exactly what most would consider an RPG at all, I mean hell... They had Scrabble for the Atari too.

EDIT2: And by the way, Square was going under and they needed something to try and bring the company back to life. They pretty much decided "hay, lets try to improve upon what Enix did". It was a last ditch effort to save the company, which is why they named it "Final Fantasy".

1. Final Fantasy VI - The best Final Fantasty. Incredible soundtrack, characters, story and above all else Kefka's laugh!

2. Xenogears - One of my favorite games of all time. Xenosaga kicked arse too but it was much too short and had WAY too many movies.

3. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Don't like Zelda games that much but I really liked this one. The best game on the Nintendo 64 easily!

4. Final Fantasy - The 2nd best Final Fantasy Game, the first video game I ever played. Still one of my favorites.

5.. NHL '94 - The best sports game of all time! Had to be on the list.

Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast) - the Best game for the Dreamcast, amazing gameplay, fun storyline, the best 3D sonic game ever made, even the music was great, so great it inspired me to play drums!
Elder Scrolls: Morrowind (PC) - Endless Gameplay and fun, do whatever u want style of gameplay
Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast) - One of the first online console games, an amazing fun game to play, still played on pc servers today, and i find the music to this game as the best video game soundtrack. Ever.
DOOM (PC) - Truly Revolutionary, possibly the first well known shooter, and at the time the graphics were orgasmic, and its still fun to play even today.
Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2 (SNES) - Fun all around, everyone young and old had fun with this game, i remember having the hardest time playing the sequel as a kid, and now its a piece of cake :) still great gameplay and unique graphics
