I take it you're talking about Final Fantasy games, so I'm moving this thread to Gen FF. ^_^
Please remember to post things in the right forum the next time, thanks~

Normally, I keep the default character names, however in FF Tactics I often renamed the generic units, some of which I gave names of characters from other FF games (Garnet, Aerith, Locke etc).
And, I changed Garnet's name back to her normal name in FFIX, after having her go through most of the game as 'Dagger' (because it did fit in with storyline).

I couldn't sit through Final Fantasy IX with Zidane named Zidane. I kept on imagining a slightly balding French footballer instead of the Final Fantasy character, and I wanted to change that opinion right away.
"GOAL!"
Erm, I also changed Squall's name. I thought that name was kind of, well, crap. Yes, I know Cloud isn't any better. But I seemed to prefer Cloud to Squall and Zidane. I didn't alter Rinoa's name though... Surprisingly.

I always change the names. The main boy is the person I like at the time, the main girl is my name *Courtney* and the rest are friends

<font color=red face="comic sans ms">I always kept everyone's names as the default, apart from Garnet whose name I kept as Garnet (rather than changing to Dagger), and once I tried changing Red XIII's name to Nanaki to see what happens when you get to Cosmo Canyon, but when you get there Cloud still wonders who Nanaki is anyway. :erm:

Ive always just kept the defualt names, I dont think it seems 'right' when you change them (only changed them for a muck about n dssidnt like it), But in ff1 you need to make up your own names so I had no choice there, still it seems funny when the stories got ur mates names in it:p

I change the characters names to names of people I know who are like that character. Either that, or a name that suits the character more. It's a shame you can't rename all the characters in FF games.
The only game I did change their names was Final Fantasy 7. They all had (with an exception of some) the root name of Bert (yeah, I know a wonderful name).
Cloud was Albert
Tifa was Roberta
Barret was Robert
Aeris was Lucinda
Red XII was Bert
Vincert was Bobert (the best one, just kidding)
Yuffie was Berta
Cait Saith was Norbert
Cid was Paul

Only time was replaying FF8; I changed the names to match personalities of people that I know. Thats about it.

The first time I play it I usually keep the names default just so I'll know whats going on, who everyone is talking about, that sorta thing. But the 2nd time through I usually change the names.

Greetings.
The answer I have here is yes. I change the names (In games where I can) to give the game a more 'personalised' feel to it. I'm not saying that I dislike the names for the characters, but one of the reasons I change the names, is to give myself a sense of escapism, if you will. A way to escape to another world, for a time. Now some people may call me a freak and such for doing so, but it's something I do to escape my current reality. If that's a crime, so be it.

Only once have a changed the default name and that was on the first ff game i ever played, VIII. I changed Squall's name to Blade because i think i was always using that name in games where you could change the name. Anyways, that was the only time and if i play VIII again i probably will keep the default name because i like it that way.

i didnt change garnet's name, either; i thought dagger was gay. i also changed red's name to nanaki, and got a little confused in cosmo canyon.
in ffviii, i always change angelo's name to angel. i usually change them to all uppercases too cuz its easier to read who is saying what or who they are talking about. unfortunately, i did that in 8 and only had SQUALL and RINOA like that. everyone else was normal. :*(

I only ever changed the names the first time i played FF7 and FF8, every other time i played it i kept the default names, i think i like defaults on really plot heavy games and FF games because the are usually really cool - with a few exceptions
plus when you go back to save games a fter not playing it for a while, i always wonder why i gave the chars daft names that didn't run with the characters story...

I use to always change name for my first playthrough, Then leave them as the defaults on subsequent ones, but recently (FFX) I've just left them at the defaults the whole way through. ;)

I used to do it quite a bit, but not so much anymore. When I played FFIV and FFVI through the first time (as FF II and III), I named every character after one of my siblings or one of my cousins.
When I was replaying IX I renamed Steiner "Rusty". Just because it makes me giggle.
