same thread below, but in the bizarro world and hence the opposite.

have you ever heard about a game and said "FUCK NO, AINT GONNA GET THAT"
but after looking into it/playing it you said " HADES FUCKING CHRIST WITH A CACTUS, I NEED THIS GAME!"

well, this happened to me several times over 4 gens.

the earliest i can remember was goldeneye 007.
back in those days, i wasnt much of a bond fan. didnt even knew sean connery played him (and i loved THE ROCK).

when i first saw the game i was like "ugh, doom-like game, (at the time, i was very young, doom, even on easy, was hard for me, wasnt accostumed to FPS games yet).
not interested".
then one night a cousing brought the game and told me to give it a try. i did, and halfway through the first level i was already crying with joy to buy this game. it was just so different from what i thought i could not stop admiring it.

another game i wasnt interested at first was gta 3.
i never liked GTA games to that point. i didnt find them entertaining as i felt they were racing games with violence. (never played them, just saw people played them).
then i actually get to play gta 3, and i was hooked.
to this day its my favorite gta.

fast forward to this gen, the battlefield games.
i never played any BF games before, and the first time i actually did was on the bf2 beta. then i played the beta and was completely frustrated and bored with it. i hated the fact the game had bullet drop.
then i avoided the series until i found a cheap copy of bad company gold edition. played it and i was like FUCK YEAH because it didnt have bullet drop, and it turned out to be an amazing game, still play it over BC2, and will probably play it alongside bf3

so, what are your stories?

Uncharted series for me. I thought the game was terribly over-hyped and overrated, but after going through a few levels, the game really grew on me and I love it now.

Portal for me as well. Didn't look like my kind of thing at all, and to be fair it probably still wouldn't be without the excellent script. They made a really smart move when they listened to the feedback they were getting and made it an easier, smoother experience.

Batman: Arkham Asylum also probably would have passed me by, if a mate hadn't lent it to me. I assumed it would be the usual licensed game knockoff tat, but its actually one of the best games of this gen.

Portal and Portal 2 manage to have some of the most perfectly written characters I've ever seen in a videogame. They're robots, for cryin' out loud! AIs, mind you, but robots nonetheless! And they're more human than most human NPCs found throughout shooters and other genres! They show true emotion, they aren't perfect, and they're downright hilarious! I found that rather ironic, and quite interesting. The gameplay is intriguing, with all the cool puzzles, obstacles and implements used to complete goals, but admittedly it would get old quickly without the amazing characters and story. They created the perfect balance between plot and gameplay, and it works exceptionally well. It's no wonder people love them so much, with how well Valve crafted them. I was put off at first by Portal, way back when I first played it, because it was just so different from everything else I'd played at the time. But by my second playthrough I was hooked; short as Portal is, I think it worked best just the way it is. As someone at Valve put it, "Portal is a test bed. Portal 2 is a game."

Final Fantasy 12. I hated it from when I played it back in 2006 up until a few months ago. Skanker managed to get me to try out the International release with the Job systems and now I'd say it's definitely my favourite Final Fantasy and maybe my favourite JRPG.

Haha! What a great game.

Anyways for me it was Madden. I hated everything to do with it until Adrian Peterson came into the game in 07.
