Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

This is my first submission to ffshrine. I took a great deal of time to remaster these in FLAC using GoldWave from the ripped PSF files > WAV (google if you want them) because the original Crash Bandicoot games are among my favorite video games and the soundtracks to these games are amazing.

Josh Mancell (the composer) said that he hopes to officially release the soundtracks on iTunes (and believe me, the pre-playstation mixes are outstanding), but there's some legal hoops to hurdle through.

So anyways, here's Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (flac)
(Also, I've the PSFs were made to loop twice, so I faded out or made endings to the tracks.)

From Readme: Remastered and Encoded by Logan812

PSFs originally ripped by Matrixz (June 2006)

I converted the miniPSF files to WAV using XMplay, then I imported them to GoldWave to clear the audio (using mostly spectrum filter and swapping stereo tracks (the PSFs were in reverse for some reason.)) I also faded out/ended the tracks because the PSFs loop twice. To ensure top-notch quality, I kept all files in a lossless format (WAV and FLAC) at all times.

Originally composed by Josh Mancell (formally of Mutato Muzika)

Enjoy!

Please enjoy and leave a comment!

"Remastered?"

Basically, I took the ripped PSF files and converted them to WAV.

The "remastering" is when I took the music into GoldWave to clear the audio using spectrum filtering (the treble isn't bland anymore and there is more bass), swapped stereo tracks (the PSF files had them reversed for some reason), added a slight amount of reverb to tracks that needed it ("Space" and "Ripper Roo" if I remember correctly), and faded/ended the tracks because the PSFs were looped twice.

Definitely snagging this, thank you sir.

Any chance of "Remastering" the other crash games?

Just to let you know Playstation 1 and 2 games that use sequences (like this game) are ADPCM, meaning that they are not lossless.

Good work though.

You don't understand the meaning of "lossless."

Thank you.

Although it's technically lossless that once it was converted to a streamable format, it was through both WAV and then FLAC - meaning that no quality was lost in the translation compared to if I had converted it into mp3. I see what you mean though.

You're welcome.

I'm not really sure that I would do one for Crash 3 since Raziel08 has uploaded both the original and remastered version that he made in FLAC, but I'll try to do one for Crash 1 and CTR (I believe that guys at Naughty Dog mixed Crash 1's soundtrack mostly in mono, so there's not much I can do about that (if you or anyone else doesn't like mono.))

EDIT: I may go and rip Crash 3 the "hard way" using ePSXe and stereo mix at 99% to get all of the instruments in. Of course if I do that, I'll have to go back and do Crash 2 too (which I can do, but not now.)

i say ignore the other dude who wants more crash games and move on to a different game. im 100% dude is going to ask for another crash game and so on, until you build a compilation.
Just my 2 cents and experience on these forums.

Oh believe me, that's something I've learned on Youtube. Really I just do what I feel like. If one person or a small group of people want me to do/upload something I don't feel like, then I'm sorry. I'm trying to do these Crash soundtracks while I feel like doing them (I enjoy the music in these games too, so that's a bonus for me.)

Josh Mancell has some on his facebook music page: music by Josh Mancell | Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/music-by-Josh-Mancell/106760029361776) (There's also the cool N.Brio track that was only in for about 30 seconds in two cutscenes.)

Oh wow, the quality. I listened to the Playstation edit straight after and it sounds so compressed compared. Shame we couldn't convince him to leak the files ;)

The hard way should be using line-in from a real PS1. Is that what you meant SmartOne, using emulators or is it about all the tweakings he did with Goldwave?

Thank you for this! I was wondering if anyone had the capabilities or patience to do this. I don't know if anyone has tackled Spyro The Dragon (the first game in the series). But, from what I know and have, that one definitely needed to be remastered. I don't know how Gold Wave operates, cause I use Adobe Audition and Audacity, but all you have to do with a mono track is convert it to stereo.

I have all 3 Spyro games in stereo. Not my rip, however.

Probably because they're only ever heard during the dialog sequences, and as such, probably couldn't be separated from the dialogue in the ripping process. Josh Mancell has them both on his Soundcloud if you want to listen.

No, the dialogue shouldn't be the problem, otherwise the title screen music would have a similar issue. Unless the music and the dialogue are melded together in the files...

And I know of Josh Mancell's SoundCloud, but I did all I could: I can only see Coco's theme on his profile. And while yes, I have a way of listening to those songs, I would like to listen to the original MIDIs. Partially because I would appreciate it more, partially because of a sense of completion, and partially because of convience for me and everyone else.

I think that's what it is, that the music and dialogue are melded together for the hologram conversations, but apparently not for the title screen. I'm no expert, but that's just my guess.

I'm sure Brio's theme is still there, but it's probably way waaaaaaay down because of how long ago he posted it.
