Here it is, exactly nine years after its release (2002-03-21). As it seems, the first rip ever ...

Geinō Yamashirogumi ~ Symphonic Suite Akira 2002 (ver. 1.01)

Composed and conducted by Ōhashi Tsutomu in 1987.

The 4.1 multichannel audio content was ripped from the original DVD-Audio (VIAL-60001) and has been meticulously corrected.

tracklist

01 3:43 Kaneda
02 3:35 Battle Against The Clowns
03 3:22 Winds Over Neo-Tokyo
04 3:28 Tetsuo: The Theme of Tetsuo Special Patterns
05 1:36 Tetsuo: The Theme of Tetsuo II Awakening I, II
06 3:12 Tetsuo: Awakening III Meditation
07 1:59 Tetsuo: Coda
08 2:56 Dolls' Polyphony
09 2:47 Shohmyoh: Kongohkaigobutsushingon Shihosan
10 3:18 Shohmyoh: Shiharamitsusan
11 4:03 Shohmyoh: Shohgondarani
12 5:21 Mutation
13 3:20 Exodus From The Underground Fortress / Kei and Kaneda Escape
14 6:33 Illusion: Netori Notto Issei Nanori
15 4:45 Illusion: Iroe Tetsuo's Statement
16 2:48 Illusion: Prayer
17 4:16 Requiem: Prologue Requiem Aeternam Vocalise
18 4:16 Requiem: Invention Toccata
19 6:00 Requiem: Shu Recollections of Festival Rest in Peace

Those familiar with the music will notice that some of the pieces are longer than those on the original album, so you can also call this an "expanded" release. (On the other hand some tracks are slightly shorter.) Four pieces were divided for the DVD-A version, so there are slight pauses and fade-outs here and there ... In two cases I edited them back together again (tracks 5/6 and 18/19). In other cases this was either not possible or not necessary.

On the whole, this version has different sound, extended running time (71:11) and lacks the introductory sound effects heard on the original album.

A personal recommendation: Go for my Symphonic Suite Akira 2019 (Thread 227826) which uses this rather boomy release drenched in reverb as enrichment for the original album. I find it to be superior.

Maybe the 1994 version is from a remaster series. CDjapan lists several releases by Geinoh Yamashirogumi with the exact same date. The CD album version I offer for download shows some clipping - maybe the 1988 version is even better!? :)

Okay, I've seen this thread for earlier but kept skipping over it. I hate being a nit, but am I to understand that this is not, in fact, a symphonic suite at all; that is, either an official, concert arrangement of the music ((similar to the normal CD release,) or a fan made product combining tracks to simulate a concert version, but is the exact opposite of a symphonic suite, that is, a very polished DVD rip.
Sorry for the long sentence,
JonC

Eisengeist

Of course this is a DVD rip, but not from selected channels of a DVD-Video to omit dialogue and sound effects but a DVD-Audio rip. It's a "DVD rip" of a music DVD as a "CD rip" is a rip of a music CD.

The Symphonic Suite AKIRA 2002 is an updated version to the original album from 1988.

I don't know what you think "Symphonic Suite" means, but several soundtrack releases from Japan bear this title - I think, a way of saying: This is the real thing: no SFX or dialogue. (correct me if I'm wrong)

Just to further clarify things: This is from a genuine album I have in my possession. It's the only "pure" DVD-A I have (no DVD-V part). I bought it 3-4 years ago. The current amazon (B00005S7GM) price is steep to say the least.

My apologies if I sound harsh. The real fault here are the publishers. The Japanese invented the term symphonic suite, and used them to distinguish from BGMs, that is, albums using the actual music from the film (or TV show.) That this was labeled a symphonic suite is just... contrary.
I'll shut up now,

Well, it is not a symphonic suite; in order to qualify as such it would have to be a) symphonic, and b) a suite. That, I suspect, is why JonC is commenting.

The album was officially released with this title; presumably whoever titled it was in the traditionally Japanese frame of mind where throwing in random English makes whatever you're selling into a super-cool commodity.

The term "symphonic suite" when applied correctly, refers to a piece of music performed by a modern symphony orchestra - which has been written with symphonic structure in mind (form, melodic integration, etc).

Anything else is just mindlessly using words with no thought to the expectations they convey or the implications they make.

share some details, plug-ins. which version is it you're playing?

piotr47
07-29-2011, 10:02 AM
Windows XP pro foobar v0.9.6.8, didn't add any plug in.
My spdif is ON (bitstream with MKV or divX hd and DTS CD are OK...), I've got no 5.1 problems exept these FLACs (just tried to put a DTS CD, works fine, played a .DTS file from my computer, works fine...)...

Anyway, thanks for trying to help me!

Edit : tried to update foobar, no results...

Edit 2 : It's probably foobar not doing a DTS downmix of the FLACs in question. I managed to output front channels only, not 4.1. Maybe a SPDIF is not enough for outputting 5.1 flac in lossless. I need a dts downmix (from the files or from a program...) or an HDMI output for audio... Damned, I'm depressed!!

Eisengeist
07-29-2011, 10:53 AM
so you downloaded the 5.1 flac version i take it? (first entry in opening post)

what does foobar show in its status display when playing?

make sure you don't have any DSPs enabled (such as "convert 5.1 to stereo").
[preferences -> playback -> DSP manager]

piotr47
07-29-2011, 11:24 AM
I took the 4.1 version (first in the list)... I checked the dsp in foober, no one is active.

What do you use for those FLACs... Optical cable? HDMI? HD amp?

Foobar detect FLAC 6channels.

I'm pretty sure it's a bandwitch problem with spdif. And I don't know how to force DTS downmix with foobar...

Eisengeist
07-29-2011, 11:40 AM
I use optical cable but I'm a stereo man and have no 5.1 setup. But you're right of course: 5.1 PCM (not FLAC as it gets decoded before transmission) is simply not possible with SPDIF. And I think the stereo signal you get is not a downmix but the two front channels.

I don't think there's a real-time DTS conversion plug-in for foobar. So you'd either have to change the interface (HDMI) or use a stand-alone DTS converter.

Unlike many other DVD-A-ISOs I can't play this one with foobar2000 (+"DVD-Audio Decoder and Watermark Detector" aka foo_input_dvda). It shows all the tracks with correct lengths but refuses to actually play them; the console yields many repititions of
Stream parameters not seen; skipping frame.
one or more bad chunks removed from dsp chunk list.

ShaPlayer also skips all tracks; extracting the MLP tracks with DVD-Audio Explorer does not yield playable files; immediately decoding them to wav by it fails.

Do you have an idea what's going wrong here? Perhaps this is some copy protection doing its work?
By the way, the FLACs sound great :)

I noticed that there are some further track groups:
GROUP2:
INFORMATION (BGM使用曲)
EXODUS FROM THE UNDERGROUND FORTRESS (ケイと金田の脱出)
GROUP3:
CREDIT (BGM使用曲)
KANEDA (金田)

Perhaps those tracks are worth to be ripped as FLAC, too?

taken offline for remastering and new stereo downmix, see below.

Eisengeist
05-11-2012, 02:04 PM
Over the last weeks I spotted some minor noises in the 4.1 material and removed them. I also optimized silent portions which are now really silent and not just hiss and tiny noises.

As a little bonus, the gap between track 18 and 19 was eliminated (like I have done with tracks 5 and 6 before) and the flow of the original album's Requiem was restored for this part.

The new version has no additional silent center compability channel to save storage space. Furthermore, the LFE channel is not the usual rumble but also incorporates higher frequencies which technically makes it a center channel. According to FLAC standard, the 5 channels of the new version are 5.0 (not 4.1) which is more or less true in this case.

Using this newly remastered material I made a new stereo downmix version which is now more refined than before. The high-resolution version of that downmix is now 24 bit/48 kHz instead of 24 bit/96 kHz because the original material is 41.1 kHz anyway and when analyzing the spectogram of the multichannel material you can see that is very rare that the higher frequencies are really used.

regular CD album

During the last weeks' research and remastering I found two different CD versions of the original Symphonic Suite Akira on the internet. While I'm not entirely sure of their origins, one of them has a better dynamic range. I assume that one is the original version from the 80's. While there generally is nearly no audible audio quality difference, for example Winds is very different in terms of build-up. Dynamic range is clipped on the '94 release and the phase is inverted.

Because of some requests for the original CD album version I uploaded them too, untouched (see opening post).
The 4.1 (5.0?) rips (2.79GB total) don't seem to want to convert for me.

The 4.1 (5.0?) rips (2.79GB total) don't seem to want to convert for me.

Well, this request can be answered in multiple ways ...

- Did you ever convert multichannel audio to multichannel MP3?

- The only multichannel MP3 format I know about is "MP3 Surround" by Fraunhofer. I don't think LAME would do the trick.

- Try to be more specific and to not spam this thread. For instance, I'd like to see the converter output error message.

- If you simply want MP3-to-go, take the CDDA version and convert that one to MP3. There should be no problem ...

Hi! Ehm... I would like to send you a PM, but i think I can not...
I would like to ask you if you found something about the Clint Mansell Pi score.
The music he composed, not the album with Aphex Twin etc...
Thanks!

And yes, I got hold of the 6-track promo but not the supposedly longer one. Will be one of my next releases. Stay tuned.

sadly I can not download the files. Minus seems to be in big problems. When I try to download a file the server dos not respond. It seems that they have eliminated the suport for all except image files, and even images have problems acording to the users.
Can you please upload at least the 4.1 version in another server (mediafire) or maybe a torrent file ?
- Is the original DVD-A version in 4.1 or 5.0?
It would be awesome to hear this version. I searched in google and the DVD-A version have desapeared from the market?

mote: sinus' Minus links still work.

the files apear in the link but when I try to download them Chrome says "Error 102 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED): server rejected the conection"
Same with Internet Explorer. I have also tried using several proxies as someone sugested in a thread of minus support, but that doesnt work for me, nor the sugestions of minus support (save link as.., deleting history, cookies,etc.). Some months ago I downloaded a manga from the Hox`s minus folder, but now I cant download fron that very same folder, I attempted downloading random guys files from minus and always the same, the server rejects conection and do not generate the download. Can you download the files? I can see the folder and file icons but the links in them do not work at least for me. In a post from the minus support they sayd that they are abandon file sharing and will remain in image hosting only bussines.

Sounds like a lot of work has been put into this.
Would love to download and listen to it, but I seem to be missing privileges. :-(

Watched the movie for the first time 3 days ago. The music had me at Hello; impressive soundtrack. Immediately bought the CD and had Kaneda on replay for about 12 hours straight yesterday. :-)
The version on my CD has the bike sounds at the beginning, though, and I've been trying to find one without them. Downloaded a 4-track Soundtrack I found online, but the intro to Kaneda is the same.

From what I read here, your rip doesn't have any soundeffects at all(?)
What can I do to get access to this masterpiece?

Beautiful cover, btw!!

just a post/bump in anticipation of this, signed up to the forum to send a PM and will have to wait before the privileges are enabled. Trying out a few different DLs of this album tonight as i'm a long time fan but could never get my head around the shrill overdriven treble in some parts. It looks like they've rectified that in the DVD-A. Would also be interesting to hear the alleged CD remaster...

So I finally saw this film tonight. The plot is shambolic, the dialogue terrible, and the ending is one of those old typically annoying anime endings. Urgh. How and why is this considered a classic?

Yes it had high quality animation and was animated to match the voices, which is never done in anime, and I'm not keen on sitting and listening to the soundtrack but I don't deny it's affect. But as far as story and dialogue are concerned, bleh. I loved Blade Runner and T2 was the best Terminator film, though T2 had kinda bleh dialogue and an OK story, that film was all about the effects and Robert Patrick as The T-1000, now he was scary. I do recognize that Akira was doing something new, but I cheered when Kaori the ditz got crushed, and I wondered why no one shot Kaneda in the face just to shut up his incessant babbling. Surprised Kei didn't at least give him a karate chop or two to his throat. Tetsuo was an idiot too. Since the pruny kids said he chose to use his power the way he did it's not as though the power corrupted his mind to turn him into a jerk. He was always just a spoiled self entitled brat who resented the fact that his best friend was just kindhearted and protected him since he was young. Not as though he couldn't have done his own damn growing up and defended himself later. Did I mention the shambolic plot and dialogue? The film was too darn long too for it's story.

Akira for me has strength in aesthetics. Design, direction, style, imagery, and obviously sound. Yes it might lack the plot or script of ghibli films, but so does 95% of anime.

Thanks to sinus for a copy of this. Great mixdown, brilliant copy. Still trying to figure out if i PREFER it to the original. Certainly its easier on the ears and benefits from clarity in the treble where the CD is often slightly distorted or crushed, which i always found tiring. This version is only slightly longer, many improvements in overall sound but tracks like "winds over neo tokyo" (one of my favourites although some people hate it) seem to have lost their sheer musical ENERGY. The mix has simply changed the composition and meaning of the track on a fundamental level. A lot of the time ambient SFX are brought front and centre of the mix while key hooks and melodic instrumentation are drowned out. Otherwise really enjoying it, not a 100% improvement but probably my choice of the two releases.

I signed up specifically for this thread. The Akira OST is not just one of my favorite soundtracks, but one of my favorite albums Back in 99/00 after I first saw the movie, with the classic Streamline dub on a vas from Blockbuster I was so addicted I went out to my local music store and had them order me the soundtrack. That CD was one of my genuine treasures for years, and I didn't even know there was a surround version. I wish I had the set up to listen to it, but this stereo mix is utterly commendable and thanks to your touch I'm hearing sounds I never even knew were in this. I'm not sure this will replace the original as my go-to copy (Sometimes it's DIFFERENT, not bad, but I have like every tone from the original burned into my brain.)

The farty synths in Battle against the clown were a real treat. The whole thing sounds really refreshed, and the difference in the mix is just enlightening.

TO add my own attempt to help out, I was googling around to see if this album is available on vinyl. Theretically it would have to be a double LP to get the whole thing in. I didn't find that, but I did find that it has indeed been on wax. Also, because of time constraints I imagine, it's missing some tracks. What interested me was that there's a track on it called Ohjifuchi. Does anyone have any clue what that's about?

There is an unreleased track and that vinyl has a new track. So I am hopeful that is the track I am looking for.

I'm at it again. ^^*

While growing dissatified with the lack of musical energy in my downmix, the idea of a two-part downmix series formed.

Part I is true to the DVD-A release which this thread is all about. I revisited the 4.1 material, listened to it very carefully and in the end chose to make a straight downmix. Got rid of the LFE channel and treated front and surround channels equally. It now sounds more balanced and less boomy. As I wrote, this downmix is true to the 2002 release.

Wanna have it? :)

Part II will be a downmix incorporating material from the official CD version. That means its sound will be enriched quite a lot. :)

I am going to spam a bit in saying there are 2 releases, a single and a LP version with 2 new tracks. Symphonic suite is not the soundtrack... its a symphonic suite. There are amissing tracks, and I am still hoping someone might get those 2 releases and share it. They are pretty damn rare and hard to find. I have not even seen it on youtube or some other video site like nicoudga just to see if those tracks are the missing tracks or not.

Where can we find information about said releases? Discogs only shows a vinyl release with the track Ohjifuchi. As this release only has five tracks: Kaneda, Tetsuo, Ohjifuchi, Exodus From The Underground Fortress, Requiem, the chance may well be that Ohjifuchi is just a suite of the other tracks off the symphonic suite otherwise missing on the LP ...
