Looking at the character names this is Seiken Densetsu 3. I think that Hawk would make the best main character.

It all comes down to how you play the game, and who is your favorite character.
In my case, it's Duran. His style suits me just fine ( having to "hit-and-run" is just the way I usually play Seiken Densetsu, and Duran possesses the higgest attack power ), plus I like swordsmen. His sword has longer reach than, say , Kevin or Hawk, and he's stronger than Lise who has a longer range with her spear. He also gets the best techniques.Best final class for Duran ? Probably Swordmaster,if you have Carlie because of the elemental sabers...having both Moon and Leaf Saber makes him nearly invincible, not forgeting than both his level 2 and level 3 techs hurt all ennemies...Ouch.But if you forgot to take Carlie and/or Kevin, DEFINITELY turn him into a Lord, or if you have Kevin but not Carlie, go for the Paladin. Both of these are good, as you have a strong fighter with high evasion ( because of his ability to use shields ), AND the hability to heal too. Can't go wrong with Duran as a main character, IMHO.He's a powerhouse who's hard to knock down, and who knocks down HARD as well.
I would NEVER use Carlie as my main character ( I just CANNOT picture her drawing the Sword of Mana lol How could she even lift it ??? :p ), but almost ALWAYS take her as third...She's the best healer by far, and healing magic is hands downs the MUST HAVE skill in this game, or else it will much more difficult and you'll have to carry a lot of items...Best final class ? Probably Bishop because of the Elemental Sabers and Turn Undead, or Necromancer because of Black Curse...but , in her case, she gets to be able to heal all the party at once regardless of her final class...making her useful anyway. Not a very good choice for main character, because she's worthless in a fight...hands down the best support character though.
Hawk and Kevin are considered the best fighters because they are ambidextrous and strike twice per attack. While I DO agree this makes them useful, this by NO MEANS make them better fighters than Duran, no matter what people say about Duran's slow recovery time ( which is false, by the way, because it's the same for EVERY character, and is NOT determined by agility, that determines evasion and hit accuracy, and besides Duran's agility is on par with Lise's...).
Kevin has the advantage of transforming into a werefolf, giving him strength even surpassing Duran's ...but only at NIGHT...Unless you do it on purpose to fight at night by getting up form Inns during the night, this is something that benefits you only for half the time...even taking into account "Pressure Point", which allows Kevin to increase his strength even during the day, but not as much as if he would transform. Best final class ? Definitely Warrior Monk. Able to heal the entire party at once PLUS casting the ever-useful Leaf Saber. Including Pressure Point, he can boost himself up at ANY TIME. Only drawback ? He doesn't have any full-screen techs...Overall, a solid choice for main character, as he's arguably the best fighter , but it all depends on how you play.
Hawk is kind of a mixed back...he's DAMN FAST, and strikes twice. He's also less prone to fall into traps because of his luck rating. He's a bit lacking in the strength department, but since he strikes twice he does very good damage. In his case, it all comes down to what you want to do with him...but you're better off turning him into a Night Blade. You definitely want him to weaken those nasty bosses you're fighting with his Jutsus, and his level three tech is arguably the coolest looking one of the game ( Go ! SPLIT-IMAGE SLICE !!! ;) ) If you happen to have a character that can already raise your stats or lower your enemies' ( Lise or Carlie as a Necromancer ) AND one with the ever-useful Leaf Saber ( Duran as Swordmaster or Kevin as Warrior Monk ), then opt for Wanderer instead. Why ? Two words : AURA WAVE. With this little baby, you get any boss killed before he knows what hit him. Hawk is another solid choice as a main character, along Duran and Kevin.
Lise is the most well-rounded character of the game. She can either raise your stats or decrease your enemies'...which is the same no matter how you look at it :p Therefore, depending on how you want to play, either go for Star Lancer or Fenrir Knight. You'll get a great summon spell with either of these options as a bonus. But because Lise doesn't stand out in any particular domain, she's just a decent choice for main character. And Carlie's a better support one. But if you happen to take both of them, life's suddenly gotten a whole lot easier for you...;)
And then there's Angela...the magician. My least favorite character of the game. An absolute worthless fighter, but possessing the best attack magic in the game. Problem is...I nearly don't rely on attacking magic AT ALL. It slows down battles because of the casting, and is too MP-costly. Mind you, she IS a better choice for main character than , say, Carlie, but ONLY if you bring a hell lot of Magic Walnuts, or , AGAIN, have someone with Leaf Saber...but EVEN with that, to regain your MP you have to ATTACK...and physical fighting with Angela isn't the brightest of ideas, actually. She's definitely better as a support, but as I said, I don't rely on magic. If you DO take her ( some people DO rely on attacking magic , and that's fine by me ), make her a Grand Devina. The high variety of spells allows you to strike with the correct weakness all the time, even if the spells themselves aren't that powerful by the time your reach your final class...Rune Master is also a decent option, but don't bother with Magus just because of Ancient even if it's the best spell in the game, it isn't that worth it because of its high MP cost.
Whew...that's pretty much it. Yeah, in case you haven't figured it out, I'm a huge Seiken III fan...I know that game very well ;)

Crap, Evad, you really covered everything in that post.
Anyways, the only person I've beaten it with was Kevin -- he's the beastman, right? I don't know, I renamed him. He just kicks ass. His 1st level tech is great, because it deals boatloads of damage and hits multiple times. Even after I got the final class change -- the Death Hand, I believe -- I still used it. Sure, he had practically no magic, but I had Carlie to use the good Sabers (Saint) and Lise to make the enemy weaker. It was great. Anyway, that's my opinion.

<font face="lucida calligraphy" size="2">I played the game for a little while, and I definately liked the idea of having multiple characters and the class system, but the different combat style drove me nuts... I just like the way SoM (Which I suppose is SD2) played and handled better. I dunno, inspite of everything that sounds great about the game, I just lost interest fairly quickly.
I used Angela for my main character, but I forget who the other two were... Duran and Kevin, I think.

Gaha!
I love this game, funny you should mention it, I just started a new game of it on my illeagal emulator =P
Anyway, I almost always start with Duran (I called 'im Duron) as my main character. I like him for his attack power. I never liked Carlie, or her whole "Baby-talking-wise-cracking-litt'e-pre-pubescent-bee-otch-thing" she had going there x_X XD
In my most Recent game I played with Duran as my main character, Angela as my second (I can apreciate her magic power, but I think I shoulda used Lise instead), and Hawk who is simply a really cool character and he has a ponytail, which makes him all the cooler...
I've started the game with every character, but only to see tha "pilot" for each one. I thought that Kevin's was depressing. I couldn't feel the same way for Carlie I think the preist d00d did a bad job at raising her. Duran's beginning seemed kinda boring compared to teh rest o.O . I though Angela maybe got what she deserved. Hawks was also kinda depressing to me, but I thought it was the most interesting. Lise had a pretty good beginning. I didn't go all the way through with it though.
*Warning Spoiler for Secret of Mana below....I think*
Hey what about Seiken D. 2? I got to the end badguy white dragon, after beating the evil what's-his-bucket....Thanatos I think...and Dyluck dies and all that. But anyway! I got to the dragon and by that time I had run out of magic for ALL my characters AND because you can only hold FOUR of each item I couldn't restore it! Ooooooooooo! That REALLY pissed me off! I was about to strangle someone....anyway....I thought I'd just add that 'cause this is Seiken Densetsu and not any of them in particular...
Question? Has anyone ever played/seen Seiken Denstsu? The first one? Does it exist? What's up with that?

The orginal Seiken Densetsu was released as Final Fantasy Adventure in the US (and everywhere else as far as I know) for the original Gameboy. A new version is currently being remade for the Gameboy Advance. Squee!
