I have been a fan of RPG's for many years but i have never seen any RPG series get as popular as final fantasy. There are alot of people who say that FF games are not hardcore RPG's but yet even today 16 years after the release of the first final fantasy the series is still going strong.
So i was wondering why do you think it is so popular and the best selling RPG series ever made.

The challenge, the gameplay, those things are some of the basics that made the FF series so popular but also the critical acclaim that the series has garnered from mags and other media sources are also integral parts of its popularity. That's pretty much my whole take on the subject.

The story seems to be the main attraction for people who are new to the series, the open ways of doing things like exploring and sub-quests adds some fun then just completing the main objectives. Each character having certian issues in the game makes it seem more realistic and fulling to complete and understand how the character learns and grows when guided by you.
Spoilers
Example: Tidus in FFX wants to know about his home and his father. Example 2: Yuna going to get the final aeon to battle Sin.
Example 1: Garnet in FF9 running away from her mother. Example 2: Vivi trying to learn of his birth and if he is a machine
End of Spoilers.
These varied problems that get solved as you complete the game seem to become more understanding of what goes on in the game. Would you rather have something more involved or a vertical shoot them-up with no story?

I think the way they present a good story through good graphics attract people to the FF series. They play for the graphics they stay for the story.

I'll just add in another reason: the music. The Final Fantasy series has a lot of great music to listen to, most of it all by the same great artist: Nobuo Uematsu.

The stories are always [Well mostly with the exception of Mystic Quest] diverse and easy to understand for the casual gamer, but for the more adventurous they were involving and deep, with complex structures.
The characters are real, ableit sometimes clich, and the designs for not just the characters but the cities, towns, monsters and various creatures are amazing.
The music is amazing and diverse, tempting many not to just buy the game but to purchase the OST also, the music is played at the right times and always feels right.
The graphics, they are always ahead of the pack, even with FFI the graphics were above the rest, and they always have been without sacrificing the gameplay.
Fun factor, they're always fun to play, and get you, the player, involved.

First, if you didn't say it was the best...
Sephiroth would kill you.
Then Kefka would burn you.
Then Bahamut would fry you up to a golden-brown crisp...
Kuja would threaten to replace your wardrobe with his...
...and Brahne would sit on you.
So we'd better say it's the best. :P :D
Anyway...
One thing I think I've always associated with Square, especially when it comes to the FF series, is that they always excel in everything. Graphics, story, music, gameplay... it's kind of silly when I thought about it, but how many games do you know that actually have whole symphonic concerts and other huge events centering around them?
Very few, if any.
So FF has always been about, well, playing a good game. Having that great adventure that you can go to, visit again and again, that you can talk about and think about. Some fantasies are just so much fun, right? :D

The reason I guess that I like FF so much really has to do with the characters and the story. The stories that each FF has is unique and special in its own way. Not to mention, the way that they tell the stories is so great that the stories never seem to get old and repetive.
The characters in all the FF also seem to stick with you. I can't help but admire how well done and developed each character is.
I guess that these are the main reasons that I am a devote FF fanatic.

Um, maybe because the storyline, graphics, characters, setting, music and the themes in all the games in the series are easy to like and cos it's popular more people want to play it to see what it is all about. Yush, enough said~ ^_^

All I have to say is the only reason they are so damn popular is because Enix never brought the rest of the Dragon Warrior (Quest) series to America... Actually, in Japan the FF Series is pretty much second rate in their standards and the DW Series kills it in every way you can think of (which is why the merger of Square and Enix is so big, it is the number one and two RPG companies merging).

I've always been a big fan of Enix and the DW series too. It will be great to see what the two companies (square/enix) can do together.
Anyways, the main reason I like FF is because of the fun character's, Great storyline's and awsome music. I played FF2 and after that I was hooked to series, waiting for the next game to be released.
FF seems to be a growing cult favourite in RPG's.

I think that ffshrine got popular because of its graphics, battle systems, and there plots.

Okay, okay, I'm sure monsterskate actually meant Final Fantasy and just messed up and said the wrong thing.
