It's from a clean rip of the OST, plus all the missing tracks converted from the game's XA files. Like Onikage's battle theme. How could they leave that off the official OST? Shameful.

I think this one is also called Tenchu Fatal Shadows or Tenchu 4.
It's already shared by bronxdutch
There's still the PSP version, but the music was garbish.
For Vanquish, I played the game and I can tell you it's a great, nervous and pumped up game.
Tons of action, really hard. A game for the gamers!!
I don't remember the music well though, maybe because of all that action.
I think it was electronic style.
I recommend this game to those who don't fear death (virtually right?)

Hmm. I got around to listening through the Chrono Cross OST, and something is up. Did you rip these yourself? Because the tracks seem to have a wavering, crackling, fuzziness about them. Sometimes it's subtle, but there is definitely something wrong. The youtube uploads sound a lot better.
And tracks 11-16 on Disc 3 have a loud horrible clicking noise all through out.

Ripping bootleg prints in lossless is pretty pointless after all. You don't even know where they (the bootleggers) took the material from, which they used to master the disc.
Furthermore mastering quality is really bad most of the time. Just looking at the disc won't tell you that, and also listening to the disc won't tell you either, but plotting a C2 error graph (with a optical drive that correctly extracts C2 data) will clearly show that these bootleg prints are not meant to 'last forever'...
I would start by checking your entire physical collection for bootleg prints. VGMdb can help you with this, but I would also take a look at Chudah's bootlegger reference (Chudah's Corner - Reference (
http://www.chudahs-corner.com/reference/index.php?reference=bootleggers)).
You also seem to base a lot on 'how it sounds'. Don't do that in this (the lossless) context. A MP3 encoding with LAME, preset VBR V0, is not ABXable from the original source, with the exception of some (scientific) test samples (and the assumption that the listener is trained for these specific samples). Read: When it comes to perceived audio quality, you won't get anything from lossless encoding.
You use lossless because you want to archive music correctly, which means 1:1 reproduction of the original source at all times. Your ear won't help you to verify this, so use the usual tools: spectrum analyzer, EAC log checker, aucdtect and apps using similar algorithms to detect common lossy encoder artifacts.

You're talking about the Tenchu OSTs, yes? I have yet to audibly detect any blatant flaws with it when comparing it to other available sources, as I could with that horrible Chrono Cross bootleg. So hopefully it is itself just a 1:1 copy from the commercial CDs.
And why would a bootlegger NOT make a lossless rip of commercial CD to sell? I mean, they only need to legally buy ONE official copy, then they can make as many 1:1 copies as they want to sell, correct? Why would they take it from another unofficial/lossy/flawed source? Just to be an asshole? If you are illegally distributing or selling music, at least do it right. Don't poison collections with horrible sounding fakes.

Well obviously that's not necessarily true. This bootleg's BS couldn't hide from my ears. :)
Yes, I also know that there exist examples of bootlegs which just 'sound' fine. When I was still a VGM greenhorn I purchased a bootleg copy of Biohazard Outbreak, which sounded totally fine. But a C2 scan revealed that the disc quality was pretty bad (especially at the edge of the disc) and it was only the error interpolation of my CD player that let this bad quality go unnoticed. I don't even know if it was mastered from the original data or just some lossy source, since I put it back into the packaging the exact same day.
i think the audio quality is the same as the real ones
Yes, and that's a problem: You think that the quality is the same, but do you have proof?
Like I said all this lossless ripping only makes sense if you're working on the original data. Everything else is just a gamble and you could just encode it to VBR V0 and be happy. Just encoding it to FLAC as an end in itself... pretty stupid if you ask me.
And why would a bootlegger NOT make a lossless rip of commercial CD to sell?
Because setting up your system to correctly do lossless rips is harder and the the bootlegger's customer base wouldn't notice anyway?
We have a clear example here: bronxdutch didn't even notice that he purchased a bootleg, before someone pointed out the possibility.
If you are illegally distributing or selling music, at least do it right. Don't poison collections with horrible sounding fakes.
Why would you buy something like that anyway?

its true. i thought chrono cross sounded fine. but thats because i didnt have it in flac. i did it in apple lossless. which i went through on my itunes and discovered no clipping or static whatso ever. it was nice and clean. it only started when i ripped it in flac. and only chrono cross messed up in flac. everything else that i ripped came out sounding right. its a shame too. such a great sound track. smh. maybe i can rip the images of the cd instead. hmmm. would you guys care if i ripped the image of it? lol :)

You seem to have the misconception that the target/end format matters. There is no 'ripping to FLAC' or 'ripping to Apple lossless'.
You always 'rip to LPCM stereo at a sampling rate of 44100 and signed samples with a size of 16 bit', because that's the format which is stored on a compact audio disc.
The point that matters: How does this data get from the disc to your harddrive.
bronxdutch
01-22-2011, 01:59 AM
yea i get that. i know that the copmact cd is 16 bit with 44khz sampling rate. but im wondering why my cc on a an ape format isnt messed up and the flac version is. thats all. but ill find another chrono cross. or at least ill try
LiquidAcid
01-22-2011, 02:03 AM
You're probably just using different applications to extract from the compact audio disc. A proper lossless rip is deterministic by definition: You'll get the same result each time you rip the disc.
If that's not the case with your setup, then you're doing something wrong and your rips are not proper.
KGN-004
01-22-2011, 02:05 AM
Maybe there was just some sort of error while ripping? Wasn't there talk about there being something wrong with ripping to FLAC in the EAC beta or some such?
Try it again?
Maybe rip 'em to wav, THEN convert them to FLAC? Or something.
Are you sure the non-FLAC rips don't have the same problems? Did you compare them with each other and the youtube uploads? I think "Dead Sea" was one of the many tracks where the flaws in your rip really stood out.
LiquidAcid
01-22-2011, 02:19 AM
Try it again?
Uhm, and then? Hope that it works? And the next time? Hope again? And if it doesn't work....?
Sry, but this 'trying again' approach is just that gambling I mentioned above. You want to get your setup right, so that it works correctly under all conditions.
Start at HydrogenAudio. They have some pretty good guides on this stuff and their community is very helpful.

Meh, doesn't that essentially entail just having the right settings for your drive? And comparing the results to the AccurateRip database?
Really it doesn't sound that hard.

I don't call that obsessive, because that's what a proper lossless rip is about. It's a 100% perfect 1:1 rip, not something that is 99% perfect just by chance. If you don't care about whether you can hear or not hear something, then you can just go with a lossy codec.

Yes, but for that you don't need a lossless codec. LAME VBR V0 gives you the same perceived quality without the huge file size.
You should all think about why you're using a lossless codec, because now it's just to satisfy your own ego.

Can a "lossless" CD rip with a 1% difference from the original source be compared to the amount of loss that takes place with 100% lossless rip that is then converted to V0 MP3?
I say people who claim "transparency" with V0, or even 192kbps CBR MP3 are crazy. I can definitely hear, or feel, a difference.
You should all think about why you're using a lossless codec, because now it's just to satisfy your own ego.
Well, we claim to hear a difference. You don't. You're the one stroking your ego with your pointlessly perfect collection, which according to you, would sound exactly the same as V0 MP3.
LiquidAcid
01-22-2011, 02:49 PM
You should do an ABX (ABX test - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABX_test)). You won't hear the difference, since it's all a psychological effect.
Some years back the german computer magazine c't (which are very respected among professionals) conducted a scientific test with so called audiophile people, who claimed that they could hear the difference between the original signal and a lossy encoding. I think they used something around CBR 192 at this time and some very high-quality equipment to reproduce the music.
Not a single one of those people could tell the difference. And now some years later lossy encoders have improved by a lot and were talking about VBR V0 here.
If you claim that you can hear the difference between the original source and LAME VBR V0 you're either:
1) listening to these specific test samples that I mentioned above (which are used to stress-test new encoder techniques) and your ears are specifically trained for that kind of samples
2) just lying to yourself
I won't argue any further with you about this topic, because I know that it takes a lot of time for you people to realize that you were wrong the entire time. I went through the same process and so did some of my friends. We even went to great lenghts to convince a friend's father who claimed that his extremely expensive hifi-setup was able to show the difference and conducted the tests at his place. It turned out that he couldn't even ABX a CBR 160 encode from the original source.
So be a bit self-critical and ask yourself what you really hear ;)

I didn't mean to offend.
And yes we should get on topic.
But still I wonder why acid keeps hundreds of CDs. Why not make the collection a fraction of the size with V0 and resell the CDs to go toward getting more, then repeat? Why keep them? For the jewel case? For some little booklet (which he could scan and keep too if he wanted)?

If people can't tell the difference between lossless and lossy, then why bother with lossy or lossless.
The ultimate goal is to listen to the music, not to go crazy about perfection.
Flac, Blac or Clac! As long as the sound is good to my ears, I really don't give a damn.
If it's flac, then quick conversion for space saving reasons.
Everybody can do whatever he wants considering his sound system, the storage cost and the difficulty to get a soundtrack in lossless.
"Whatever he wants" includes grabbing or not the soundtrack.
No more off topic for me. Sorry for that one.

it really depends on the song though, and usually only if i've heard it often. Things I can tell are if it sounds lightly "muffled" or if the cymbols on the drums seem to cut off kind of low. But this could be done on purpose in the mastering stages. On the other hand, loud rock songs make it hard to tell a difference between flac and 320 mp3, but say, a quiet techno song that makes use of classical instruments, would be a little easier to percieve.
I'm not claiming to hear the difference on every single song, just occassionaly when I happen to be listening very closely. And it's not so much being able to hear it as taking comfort in the fact that I'm not missing any sound quality even if I cant always hear it. I know that sounds rather pointless to some but with various speakers the difference might appear, and who knows, maybe one day my ears will be accustomed enough to hear the difference between lossless and 320 mp3 on every song. Crazier things have happened.
And either way, I'm not really over sensative about it. But the fact that you have to train yourself to hear the difference means that the people who always listen to VBR V0 or 192 mp3's will never experience it first hand, so they'll always feel correct in the argument. Rather than arguing about it, I think everyone should try to experience it themselves, and not really care what others think about it, because it really doesn't affect them much more than just riling them up.

Well I listened to the Chrono Cross OST you uploaded, and again from another source.
Much to my chagrin, I guess a lot of the "flaws" I was hearing in your first upload is just the way it's suppose to sound. :P Except of course for that clicking noise that was on the third disc.
Anyway, thanks again.
I have the Chrono Trigger OSV in flac that I might upload if anyone really needs it. It seems all the links for it in the Lossless Thread are down.

flaws again?? well........i guess your right. because the source i got it from has the digicube original pressing of it. so i guess its like that.
i could really use your chrono trigger osv. i would appreciate it if you could upload it for me :).

I've just noticed you didn't put the second disc of DmC Dangerous Hits in your upload. Could you upload it ? And also, could you check the cat number ? Just to be sure it's the original disc too ^^ (if you need something in exchange, let me know !)
