There's been a lot of negative feedback regarding recent Square Enix games (FFXIV, FFXIII etc etc), I was wondering "What was the last game Squaresoft, Enix or Square Enix actually released that you thought was good and/or you enjoyed beginning to end?" It can be a original game or sequel. Just A: no flaming of poster's responses B: try to think of other games BESIDES the Final Fantasy Series.

The last Squaresoft game I TRULY enjoyed, was Front Mission 3 on my trusty PlayStation. Great story, with a solid battle system and the music fit it quite well. Pity the latest FM sucked @$$. The rest of SE's catalog? Well, considering I still haven't forgiven them for that abysmal 'game' (if you want to call it that, and it was made before the merger of Squaresoft and Enix): The Bouncer. Never forgive you for that crap SE! NEVER!!

I haven't bought games in quite some time especially Square Enix ones. But just going by memory, I'd have to say Dissidia. That's the most recent Square game I bought (I think). Haven't played FFXIII or even Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep yet :(.

The enix side tends to make good games, so dragon quest 9 for me on that.

However if we're talking the square side only, then probably final fantasy IX, X was ok, but it was no masterpiece, if only for how stupid i found the story.

If we leave FF outside I say Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross & Legend of Mana, 3 games released the same year, Threads of Fate, Front Mission 3 & Parasite Eve 2 were released this time as well, but these 6 games got their sales overshadowed by FFIX.

If we count FF series, the last Square game that I enjoyed is FFXII, but just because I love Tactics & Vagrant Story I invested my time on reading & understanding all the Flavor, but I don't consider XII an FF title because I have different mindset on the Ivalice Titles that are developed by it's creator.

Final Fantasy XII was nice. That was the last Squeenix developed game I can think of that I really liked. Apart from that, there are plenty of games they've released that I've liked. Just Cause 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum and I also have them to thank for releasing the outstanding Persona 4 in Europe. And they're releasing the new Deus Ex to boot.

Believe it or not, I do agree with you Arigeitsu159... however as a person who has witnessed similar rants (usually FFVII fanboys screaming about FFVII), I honestly don't care if people want to be a asshole about stuff like in that vid. I 'think' the cosplayer playing Kefka was trying to get into the role of a insane clown (which he did succeed in other video's), and it came down to the point, he echoed my own feelings about KH (maybe not in such a verbal way though).

Boils down to each gamer and their own opinion... I think anyone would be hard pressed to find a game that is universally accepted by every gamer as being the greatest game (in graphics, characters, story, battle system etc etc etc) ever made, as I doubt that such a game has been made.

I love how people say the story arc is bad when anyone who's a big fan of KH knows it, it really isn't rocket science but Square didn't make it easy for us by releasing on about 9478954385734 different consoles.

But Birth By Sleep was the last square game I enjoyed, good battle system and definitely the most intense story in a KH game yet.

No, they didn't. It was developed by Mistwalker (a studio formed by a lot of former employees of Square Enix, including Hironobu Sakaguchi) and published by Microsoft. Square Enix had nothing to do with it.

RevengeofED

The only thing I disliked about XII was how narrow the story was. You could barely influence it, if possible at all. VII was more open because you actions can influence the game later on like the dating scene. Because the storyline is only a small part in the making of a game, I think SE could have improved on that. Everything else about XII is great, like the battle system, graphics, ect.

CC
01-16-2011, 10:05 PM
I agree with you on that, however I think the sheer amount of side quests and extras in the game well make up for it. And the music is amazing too :) Really captures the feel of the game and just plain fantasy in general. Severely underrated.

RevengeofED
01-16-2011, 10:18 PM
Yeah, going off topic, Final Fantasy music is something that you want to just keep listening to. No matter how many times I play a certain game the constant music never ceases to amaze me. I don't know how many people agree with me, but I like the XIII music the most because there is actual singing in it and not just a tune. Also with Final Fantasy, sidequest are a given although XII does offer a lot more then the other titles.

CC
01-16-2011, 10:38 PM
I absolutely agree! Uematsu and Sakimoto are brilliant in their compositions and I would love to see the two collaborate (if they haven't already). But on the contrary, I did not care much for XIII's soundtrack. It's a little bland for my tastes. I only played a little bit of FFXIII a handful of months ago and liked the game, although the music lacked any real emotion - something each and every other soundtrack is practically overflowing with. I consider every FF soundtrack (save for XIII) to be an immense pleasure to listen to. Each one fits the game like a glove and carries the emotion of each scene with a lot of meticulous care. FF music is half the battle :D

Smarty
01-16-2011, 10:50 PM
Well what did you expect from Hamauzu? Gotta say, though, I really digged his version of the chocobo theme. It was catchy. But apart from that, the soundtrack was forgettable.

Going back to the original topic: Final Fantasy XII. I care little for Square Enix developed games, I care very much for Square Enix published games (usually).

CC
01-16-2011, 10:53 PM
Exactly; Hamauzu's scores are atmospheric and create a certain tone, but atmospheric and melodic are built of entirely different properties that don't stimulate the same emotions in the brain. That's why Uematsu reigns supreme and Hamauzu should stay in his shadow. :D

Final Fantasy 12 was the best game by them of recent times. It dips a bit in the last third, but even then, the game itself and the side quests etc are still great.

FFXIII is on both PS3 and 360. However, FFXIV is currently for PC only - the PS3 version has been postponed indefinitely while SE fix all the problems and issues with the game (hence, a lot of players liken the current status of the game to a 'paid beta').

As for the last SE game I truely enjoyed, I'd probably say Dissidia. Yes, it's shameless fanservice, but the ability to have Cloud given a lightning enema by Shantotto was just too much fun. :p
