Very much thanks. I thought this might be too obscure to make its way here! Maybe since he's the only one credited, people will now recognize Hayato Matsuo is the man behind most of the music for this series, not Koichi Sugiyama.

Big thanks for this. Shiren soundtrack releases are rare and precious events.
@nothingtosay I believe Hayato Matsuo was the primary composer for "Shiren 3," but weren't the first two games done by Koichi Sugiyama? In any case, Sugiyama has written a lot of the central themes in the series, and he is usually credited as the soundtrack producer.

Matsuo said, "In the sequels to the original game, Mr. Sugiyama's music is only actually used for main theme and some battle themes." The Nintendo 64 game seems to be all Sugiyama from the soundtrack release, but apparently it's all the same music as the original game, and I think the original Game Boy game is too. I wonder if Matsuo did the arrangement for those though. But that leaves the soundtracks for the games on Game Boy Color, Dreamcast (the official release is incomplete and there's actually quite a bit more original music in the game), Wii, and now this DS one all composed by Matsuo. It's true however that they all use Sugiyama's theme pretty heavily.

"Shiren 2" has Sugiyama's fingerprints all over it, and it also has quite a bit of new material that sounds like his style. Every track in "Shiren GB" is lifted straight from the original game. It seems Hayao Matsuo began to take over with "Shiren GB2," as VGMDb credits him for the majority of that game's music and for "Shiren Gaiden" on the Dreamcast.
