The Lord of the Rings: The Ultimate Soundtrack

What this soundtrack is:
A compilation of music from the Complete Recordings, remixed thematically. This soundtrack represents a mix of all 10 CDs of the Complete Recordings from The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, as well as the recently released Rarities Archive. In total, there are 19 tracks, each focused primarily on a single musical theme, comprising of over 175 separate cues. Think of it as a "Greatest Hits" remix of the LOTR scores.

What this soundtrack isn't:
This isn't an official release of LOTR music. This mix was created by an amateur fan, with no intention of making any profit whatsoever. The benefits and detriments of such a mix should be readily apparent. You do indeed get a condensed, easily accessible way to listen to some of the very best musical moments from one of the greatest film trilogies of all time. However, these mixes just barely scratch the surface of the full breadth and scope of Howard Shore’s opus — not to mention that my amateurish skills likely diminished some of the original tracks.

It is my sincerest hope that these mixes will not only be enjoyed, but also spark a renewed interest in the Complete Recordings. As such, if you enjoy these mixes, I strongly encourage you to look into purchasing the entire Lord of the Rings musical collection, including The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films book, which includes the Rarities CD. Listening to all eleven CDs is a journey in and of itself — and it is one that ought not to be missed.

CD1:
01 - One Ring To Rule Them All (9:55)
02 - Concerning Hobbits (6:44)
03 - Nazgul (7:28)

08 - Nature's Reclamation (5:51)
09 - The Shire (8:15)
10 - The White Rider (7:24)

CD2:
01 - Smeagol (7:06)
02 - Rohan (8:17)
03 - The Heroism of the Fellowship (8:04)

Star Wars: The Ultimate Soundtrack

The Star Wars Ultimate Soundtrack was the culmination of my work in remixing the Star Wars scores. With this two-CD set I managed to compile nearly every musical cue that I enjoyed across all eleven Star Wars CDs, including some unreleased material I was able to locate on the internet. This is a definitive collection. I still go back to the individual soundtracks on occasion, but when I’m in the mood to listen to Star Wars, this is what I use. I’ve mixed over 125 musical cues into 18 thematically arranged tracks. This mix was completed a couple of years before my Lord of the Rings Ultimate Soundtrack, so it's much rougher around the edges.

Also, much like the LOTR mix above, I encourage everyone to go out and purchase the Star Wars OSTs -- especially the recently remastered versions. There's far more excellent music on the OSTs than I could possibly include in any mix.

CD1:
01 - Running The Blockade (7:32)
02 - The Dune Sea (8:42)
03 - Duel of the Fates (9:48)
04 - Shroud of the Dark Side (8:27)
05 - Empire At War (9:01)
06 - March of the Battle Droids (7:27)
07 - The Dark Side Beckons (6:17)
08 - Millennium Falcon (11:42)
09 - Forbidden to Love (10:23)

CD 2:
01 - Revenge of the Sith (8:36)
02 - Age of Heroes (10:06)
03 - Shadows of the Empire (7:55)
04 - The Will of the Force (8:57)
05 - Aggressive Negotiations (8:00)
06 - The Jedi Council (9:42)
07 - Spring the Trap (8:14)
08 - Master and Apprentice (7:09)
09 - Celebrate the Light (11:37)

CD 1 (165.48 MB):

CD 2 (166.62 MB):

Miscellaneous Mixes:

Over the years I've tried dabbling in a few other mixes. Time constraints have kept me from making the same kind of progress I made with Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. But here a the results of those efforts: Three BSG mixes ("Adama Family," "Crossroads," and "Roslin & Adama"), a Pirates of the Caribbean Mix ("Here There Be Monsters") and a Hobbit Mix ("Misty Mountains"). Enjoy!

Nice work, Samuel Walters! Anything related or pertaining to the musical world of Middle Earth is always appreciated! Cheers!

You are so right about that! I have ALL the recordings on an iTunes playlist and often listen to this wonderful music for an entire day at a time!

I'm glad folks are enjoying this. It represents a couple-dozen hours of work. I've added multiupload links to the original post, in case anyone else is having trouble with the original sources.

Right on! I know I said it above, but I strongly encourage everyone to go out and buy the CRs. I know they're on the pricey side, but the packaging is exceptional and the music is phenomenal. Cue them up one after the other and it's like spending the entire day in Middle Earth. Good stuff, for sure.

I'm sorry Jediknight12, I just saw this comment. I *do* have a Star Wars Ultimate Soundtrack, but I did that before my LOTR soundtrack, and the quality of the transitions isn't as good. I can upload it, though, if you're still interested. As for Indy, that'd make for an interesting project. I just might go ahead and do that -- though I did have my sights set on a Pirates of the Caribbean mix, too. Any future projects will greatly depend on how much time I have to devote to them.

Samuel Walters, I've downloaded 2nd part, but first one is still unavailable = maybe it's just temporary problem on the server for Russia and North Europe? I will wait for.
BTW It's great work, man, it's fantastic work - something I've do with James Horner's 'AVATAR' - with my megasuite, but your work is something differently other. Like Kevin Flynn in trailer for new TRON says -
"..and one day... something happens, something... extraordinary. I've got in"

Jediknight12 is correct. That cue is from from the ROTK trailer track off of the Rarities Archive that came with Doug Adams' The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films book -- which happens to be the best film score analysis ... well, ever. In the track, the cue actually begins at about the 5:57 mark, building to that memorable "NO!" moment from Sam. I'm impressed that you both picked up on that!

Ah! You caught me. I've been meaning to update that chart a bit. It represents "Version 1.0," so-to-speak, of the LOTR-US which I originally finished back in 2008. This weekend I'll go back through and try to make sure it's up to date. Offhand, though, I don't think I've used anything else from the Rarities CD. I'm planning on eventually revising some of the tracks, to include other Rarities cues, but I haven't gotten to them yet (part of the holdup is that I'm switching from a Windows-based Adobe Audition program to Mac's Soundtrack Pro to do the mixing -- and I'm still getting used to the new program).

You mean the entire Doug Adams book? It's 400+ pages. Well worth the investment for any LOTR music aficionado.

Yes the book by Doug Adams

Samuel Walters
12-10-2010, 01:38 AM
I haven't seen any scans ... though I can't say enough about the book itself. It's exceptionally well-written and the analysis is incredible. If you have the CRs, the booklets that accompany them were also written by Doug Adams, and much of those ended up in the book (though, of course, the book goes into greater detail).

EDIT:
Here's the only scan I'm aware of ... it's my own copy with autographs from Doug Adams and Howard Shore.

We could use something like this for LOST (Giacchino) and Battlestar Galactica (McCreary). Condensations of all the themes and motifs into their own beautiful suites. A really unique way to introduce, digest and enjoy a complicated score.

In case you can't tell I love these edits, sir. Thank you again!
