FLAC compresses the files, making them smaller in size, while allowing you to restore the original .wav file by a simple encode-process, if you want. Think of it as a zip container that allows you to enjoy lossless audio while preserving a bit of space.

and well if you actually cared to download brendan19's files you'll notice that there's a logfile inside. if you actually looked at it you'll realize that the cd was indeed ripped to .wav files first, and then converted to .flac files subsequently.

And I'm not following your argument of flac being high quality because it originates from a .wav file. In EAC, any disc-based audio source is .wav-extracted before the user-selected compression format is applied for the final output, hence it's the final output that matters, not the input (assuming the input is the highest quality source of the audio), as some of use may remember from the days of the mp3pro encoder.

Leon, thank you for clearing that up for me, but I have one other question: Are there various compression levels of FLAC-encoding? For example, I've seen the new Underoath album posted in FLAC @ two different sizes, varying by about 20%. That's why I pondered if the way to guarantee no compression or loss is to simply post the .wav files, which are the highest quality of audio file there is.. Thanks!

Unlike the collector's edition, that have the soundtrack on a single bonus dvd. (that could be lossy.. i don't have enough informations about it)

Well, depending how complex the material is, it is worth the effort. Normally it is just compressed by 1-2mb more. However I once get a 60mb of 500mb smaller result. And the time converting from 5 to 8 is not significantly longer.
I guess you use FLAC to built a perfect Music Archive, therefore it is best to make it perfect from the beginning so you can keep the files for all times without additional work.

As far as I know, there WAS a difference in CPU usage with the early 1.0.5 version of FLAC. That was more than 5 years ago, now with 1.2.1 it does not really matter what compression level you use. Thats what the developer says. Well, in the end I guess most important part is your player of choice. My Cowon doesnt care about the compression level. But to be sure you can only test it for yourself.

If you think of FLAC like a Winrar archive, the CPU usage encoding is much more than decoding. This is what Wikipedia says:


FLAC uses linear prediction to convert the audio samples to a series of small, uncorrelated numbers (known as the residual), which are stored efficiently using Golomb-Rice coding. It also uses run-length encoding for blocks of identical samples, such as silent passages. The technical strengths of FLAC compared to other lossless codecs lie in its ability to be streamed and decoded in a fast time, which is independent of compression level.

Because one of my friend downloaded your rip and said: " ‘Gap handling : Not detected, thus appended to previous track’ is not perfect, it is not a perfect rip, because without set it to 'Gap handling : Appended to previous track', you mustn't make this rip into the original CD. What a pity!"
My friend made me pay attention to "Gap handling". I feel guilty that I make you into a wrong direction of option in EAC.

If you really a fever in perfect lossless music, I think you should follow my last steps of suggestions:
From the main menu bar in EAC, select Action:
* Insert a CD and press F4 (Detect Gaps).
* Click "Action" and "Append Gaps To Previous Track (Default)": Selected
In that way, you must ensure that, "Append Gaps To Previous Track (Default)" is selected.

Sorry to trouble you once again, it is my fault.
So, in this way, I guarantee you'll make a true perfect rip!

Well technically, It would be 8 times in total before I'm truly done. I've reconverted the MP3 and OGG versions from the perfect FLAC rip and will reupload them to keep everyone happy and that way I won't have to reupload it again unless the links go down.

I didn't re-rip the CD into both MP3 and OGG. I did use dBpoweramp to convert the FLAC files to MP3 and OGG.

Are "gaps" the blocks of silence at the end of the tracks? As I was editing the tracks in preparation to make the mp3 vbr rip I posted (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f72/ost-assassins-creed-brotherhood-flac-82645/2.html#post1579384) earlier I noticed substantial silences, more so at the end of the tracks than the beginning (though a few tracks had 1-2.5 second "gaps" at the beginning.)
The excessive dead space was removed of course (who likes to listen to 11 seconds of silence between tracks!) so that there was a more appropriate amount of silence between tracks, and certain tracks were properly faded in/out as well.

It could be. I've never heard the phrase like that before, but sure I guess that works too.


No I mean when ripping the CD, why didn't you use dBpoweramp. I'm not really familiar with "perfect" ripping, but I'm under the impression that dBpoweramp seem to do the same thing as EAC, except its a lot easier to use and you need to pay for the pretty GUI.

You mean dBpoweramp CD Ripper. I don't have that program. I only have dBpoweramp Music Converter.

EAC (for Windows/Unix) and XLS (for Mac) are the only tools to rip a perfect lossless music of CD.
