To minimise further digression from the "Score Hunt" thread, I've decided to set this up as base for all James Horner discussion/critique.

Yep, that's right.
Personally I'm not fan, and that lends little to his general arrogance and grating temperament. No, I just vehemently dislike his self-plagiarism and banal Celtic staples, but most fundamentally it's his limited compositional pallet and thin, bland, unsubtle orchestration does little to aid what's happening on screen, other than underline that it's "JAMES HORNER" that's scoring the film in bold marker pen, thanks to his insipid 'danger motif' - that gets on my tits the most. Hack is a word I'd use to describe him, in the sense that he's a mediocre, but not necessarily poor film composer.
Believe it or not, his Land Before Time score and parts of Aliens, are the two things of his that I don't mind, or even rather like. On the other hand, I'm seemingly one of the few who find that his scores for Krull and The Wrath of Khan do nothing for me.
I hope that's got the ball rolling..
All right folks, you can discuss his Troy abomination and Gabriel Yared's equally dire score here.
