Obviously if you’re reading this now, then by the time you get around to posting the last thing you’ve read is going to be a forums post, but I’m thinking more along the lines of books, articles, short stories, comics, etc. If the last thing you read was somewhere on the internet, post a link so that interested people can read it too!
The last thing I read was this article (http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-world/20100524/EU.Britain.Autism.Doctor/) about the crazy autism/vaccines doctor finally losing his license.

It’s a graphic novelization of Franz Kafka stories that’s a lot of fun (can be found on Amazon, but their images from inside the book don’t show you much so I’m linking to Google Books). I had previously read Kuper’s graphic novel for the Metamorphosis, which is what got me interested in this.

The last thing I read was issues 1-5 of Joe the Barbarian. It is imaginative and wonderful and the art is spectacular.

It’s not finished yet, but I’m happy to send the issues out so far to anyone who is interested. I’d recommend it to anyone who likes reading adventure comics and doesn’t mind a little weirdness. Gonna try and get to my nearest comic shop later this week and buy some actual issues of it too, I want to make sure this sells well enough to get a trade.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen The Black Dossier.
Great read though I would have liked more actual character, story, & comic in it. I had trouble actually just sitting down and reading it because half of it is summary text with very little theatrics or suspense.
Finished Regulators. Didn’t end the way I remembered it ending, tbh. The appendix to the last chapter is the same, though, so it must just be my faulty memory.
It’s still good. Not great. I preferred Desperation, originally, too. We’ll see how that pans out.

Star Wars Omnibus Menace Revealed
Takes place between ep. I & II and like most prequel books I’ve read, while not bad the stories aren’t all that captivating and the characters are rather bland. The Aura Sing parts being the most interesting and but make be angry at the CGI Clone Wars series for making her weaker than she is. The artwork for the Jango Fett Story is very good, sort of a realistic caricature of the "live action’ stuff. The last 20 or so pages where lame, I thing they’re just toy adds or something becasue they all end with "With the new Republic Gunship and force FX lightsaber, the possibilities are endless! The force is in your hands!
Not bad but wouldn’t recommend it.

Leonard Nimoy screens Star Trek IV, talks about his career, all things Trek! (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/45445)
– Nimoy ragged on Michael Bay following up a comment about great effects still need a great story. “I can say that because Michael Bay is my wife’s cousin! But he’s never invited me to be in any of his projects! I sat by the phone night and day, but Michael Bay never called me!”
– Sometime in the late‘60s, Nimoy was in Cleveland at a restaurant in a private room. Someone came up to him and said, “Jimi Hendrix is in the restaurant. He heard you were here and wanted to know if it was okay if he came in and said hello.” He said of course and there’s a photograph that exists of him with Hendrix from that night.

Scp, is that a Sackboy thing?
I read Star Trek Countdown which takes before the Abrams Trek movie.
In it The destruction of Romulus is even more tragic because Spock’s reunification deal actually worked out and the Romulan culture began to open up so much that Spock was a legal resident and the ambassador of the Federation. He brought the whole star going nova deal up with the Romulan counsel and stated the only way to prevent this cataclysm was if Vulcan & Romulus pooled their tech together so as to collapse the explosion. Well both Vulcans and romulans refused to let any of their secret tech fall into the hands of the other side so Spock along with Nero who was at the system when the start first began blowing up set out to mine enough of the stuff to make the red matter to use with the vulcan’s device.
Along the way the ran into the Enterprise who Data is now the captain of with Picard now the ambassador to Vulcan. The romulan grand poobahs did the math and decided that Spock was right and began evac all too late. Nero went back home to ad in evacuations while Spock promised him that he’d do everything to save both their worlds. Nero returned in time to see Romulus blown up. Data and Picard called up Geordi who had retired from starfleet to design and build his own starships, one of which being the squid thing that Spock was going to use to collapse the super nova. Meanwhile Nero found the Romulan leading party adrift in space and brought then aboard to kill them himself. (that staff he has in the movie was the tribal spear thing of the Romulans so it’s not just a poker for poker’s sake) and using their starmaps found the secret romulan starbase where the Narada was outfitted with experimental thinking Romulan/Borg nanotechnology which can repair itself as well as upgrade and augment it’s abilities according to it’s use and environment. Using this Nero attacked Fedi, Klingon, & Cardassian territories until Worf lead a fleet to subdue him. All but 1 of Worf’s ships was destroyed and he was ordered to surrender so naturally, Worf just flew to the Neruda’s hull in a shuttle and cut his way first in then through Nero’s men. Worf battled his way the the bridge where Nero had a tentacle thing impale Worf through back. The Enterprise having Spock’s ship and the red matter joined the Klingons in fighting the Nerada and when asked to surrender and lower their shields did so, beamed Worf aboard, and got away with intermediate damage.
And so Spock set off with the red matter, fully realizing that this was a 1 way trip and his final act for all of his people, Vulcan, Human & Romulan.
Then the movie stuff happened.

I don’t think of Year One as being all that short since The Long Halloween and Dark Victory pretty much follow up on them. I know Miller didn’t write them, but still. There are so many great early Batman career stories out there in general, really. Lately I have been all about Batman: Gothic.
The last thing I read was a book I bought because it was a dollar called Like Being Killed. It was kind of annoyingly written and a lot of the characterization was inconsistent, but I barely ever read novels anymore so I am glad I read it all the same.

Read it again, it gets better! I really think Camus was a genius. Plus I mean there’s the fact that all books are better when you read them for yourself instead of school.
Wow I’m about to go read it again because of this coming up in this thread. I really love that book.
Someday I will read the Harry Potter books. It’s on my list.

Read Harry Potter! It’s a pretty good series. And rereading them now that I’m older allows me to pick and interpret the entire series in such a different way. I think every book should be read twice. As you grow, so does your perspective on things, and thus it won’t be same book. Pretty much why I want to read The Stranger again. I’m sure I’ll get a different feel from it.

The Plague touches on some of the same themes – particularly, of course, the notion of the absurd – but in quite a different manner to The Stranger. Not sure if it’s ‘better’ (it’s bloody stupid trying to assess that anyway a lot of the time, I think) but I’d definitely recommend it! There’s also a nice reference to The Stranger in the novel which made me smile.
Anyway, in the interim I read The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Kureishi, which was pretty good, and I’m currently halfway through Gabriel Garcia M???rquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. I’m trying this summer to read a lot more novels, having read about 3 in the past 9 months.

I can’t really say without giving you massive spoilers. I’m a great fan of King’s early work, and loved the idea of him doing fantasy in the Dark Tower series.
His ability to characterise is almost unsurpassed in his genre, but there are things in the later DT books that just don’t work. There is a Deux ex Machina that I’d think most people will either classify as pure genius or the pinnacle of ridiculous plot devices. I went for the latter. Anyone that has read them all will know what I mean.
I will say the very ending of the whole series was interesting; I wasn’t expecting it.
Also… I’m going to spoiler this in case you don’t want to read it, it IS a spoiler:
He attempted to do what Asimov attempted decades before which was to merge characters from other books and make it plausable. It kind of works but kind of not. I know, that sounds weird but its how I felt.
If you want to get more into it after you’re read them all get in touch then. 🙂
Unreleated: Carrie is still my favourite King book.

Personally any series that can survive and retain any measure of interest after a fifth book is worthy of some accolade. The Dark Tower certainly held mine till the end though it was a diminishing parabola of interest only repeaking with the final book. At least it didnt go the way of robert jordan poor sod.
Reread Roger Zelazny’s chronicles of amber. very intriguing novel

I think you can read Carrie in many ways. As a tragedy like Tom says of the movie, as a traditional suburban horror, as an emotionally charged metphor for puberty and repressed sexual awakenings, even as an (admittedly warped) parable.
From a literary perspective it obviously tends to favour a feminist analysis but it’s possible to undertake a structuralist reading, or a psychoanalytic reading, or even a formalist one; that’s the beauty of it. And all in less than 250 pages.
Nowadays King churns out phone book sized novels that still have a literary value but his editor needs a lesson in brutality; cut some of that crap out and make it more immediate.
That’s my rant over. Back to topic. 🙂

lol a bookclub-esque intellectual discourse in a fantasy forum. nice rant:)
Still, some of that ‘crap’ enables the structured world building in novels. i mean the dark tower series wouldnt be as engaging if King went vegetarian and pruned off much of the unnecessary backstory and went straight to the tower in one book.

When it comes to King, I liked ‘Rose Madder’, ‘Dolores Clayborne’ and ‘the last stand’ best, although my first ones ‘Salem’s Lot’ AND ‘It’ were differently fascinating as well…
My favorite will always be the ‘Dune’ world, all of them….Frank Herberts work and later then his son’s efforts too.

I read geralds game both in german AND in english, I do not know why but it was better in english 😀
Yes, I liked it too!
What a pity you do not like his son’s work, I appreciate this a lot too, it "rounds" the picture for me. (does one say that in english as well?)
I much prefer Dune to ‘lord of the rings’, although I adore the movies.
I admit I love the 1984 movie (dune) as well.
And yes, all six books, I am fascinated by the the way he narration changes with the changing of the worm, the different meaning of time, understanding of the universe, I have read those in german though.
More than once. I understand what mnakes it difficult for some people to read the last 3 books, they are different but no less fantastic….
Dr Faustus
07-31-2010, 05:05 PM
I appreciated what his son tried to do but he didn’t have the intricacies that Frank had, or the ability to stir the emotions. For me, anyhow.
"The God Makers" is similar in places; it’s by Frank. It has many parallels with the socio-political and religious aspects of Dune.
I didn’t know you were german. I read Herman Hesse some years back, though it was in translation into English, but it was astonishing. "Steppenwulf" it was called. He did simply amazing things with the narrative and the "person"… you know first person, third person? I hope you know what I mean.
On topic:

I know Hesse is good. Sadly we were tortured with hesse at school, I never found my way back to him, when i am in the right modd I like Bert Brecht, Max Frisch though.
[And yes, don’t worry, I know what you mean. 🙂 ]
Besides Sci Fi and Thrillers 😉
I haven’t read much of Herbert besides Dune.
My father left me his sci fi ‘library’ of 700 pocket books, many ‘old’ ones, Heinlein, Darlton, Sheer, and others, I grew up with sci fi books.
I have read and loved ‘a planet called treason’ by Orson Scott Card, even heinlein ‘stranger in strange world’ (afterwards learning about discussions), and Darlton "der Sprung ins Jenseits" (german title, sorry, no english title included in the book) ->dealing with reincarnation
and an amazing book by one the early and rare women in the genre : Maria Szepes.
In german it was called ‘der rote L???we’, again dealing with reincarnation, I was stunned she seems to have written this in 40ties….

I do not expect Brian to be Herbert. It is impossible to do a Frank herbert-Dune, I guess, but – for my taste – Brian did a piece that goes well along with THE ‘Dune’….

Wasn’t that edited primarily by his (anti-Semitic, proto-Nazi) sister?
Thus Spoke Zarathustra is pretty good (but avoid the Thomas Common translation). It’s an overview of the philosophy he advocated in his later works – the ubermensch, the will-to-power, eternal recurrence et al – which is also a pretty good piece of literature. Nietzsche is not someone whose philosophy I always agree with, perhaps in part because it can so easily be distorted into something horrible, but his strong affirmation of life is something that I admire greatly.

Sorry! I didn’t see this until now.
I don’t see any homosexual context behind it, at all. To me, it was more concentrated on morality … but, I can’t even begin to discuss the plot of it now. I was so concentrated in Heart of Darkness that I barely remember the significant points of The Secret Sharer. During my winter break, I plan on reading both of those stories over (just because I am on a mission to really get Conrad) and I’ll probably end up PMing you to discuss it further.
Last book read: The Good Soldier by Ford Madox Ford. Fascinating read. The beginning was a bit slow and it didn’t really peak my interest until 1/3rd of the way through. However, the manner in which it is written, in a non-linear way, made it quite interesting to read. You sort of had to follow when the protagonist was talking about the past or the present. So, essentially, he was telling you the story in a conversational manner. Which is easy enough to follow after awhile because I feel it follows the natural flow of conversation. Has anyone read it? I’m dying to discuss it – outside of the classroom setting.

5 situations where it’s better to tell than show in your fiction (
http://io9.com/5655794/5-situations-where-its-better-to-tell-than-show-in-your-fiction)
I asked Junot Diaz about this topic, since so much of Oscar Wao is explained by the narrator instead of done in-scene. His comment was "But it’s showy telling," which I think is smarter than he meant it to be. If tension is present, then the information is going to have an impact. The trick is to maintain the tension through the explanation, and that requires knowing when a reader is going to want a piece of information, withholding it from them, and then delivering it at another time when it’s still relevant. Tough thing to do because you have to lead up to the revelation as well.

When did you get to see Junot Diaz? He was speaking in one of the colleges here in NYC and I missed him 🙁
Last book read was The Return of the Soldier by Rebecca West. Short read with quite the interesting plot. A lot of it could be related back to Ford’s telling of The Good Soldier[I], but I wouldn’t compare this [nearly] linear novel to Ford’s … memory mess, is all I can call it, for lack of better words.

He spoke in either 2008 or 2009 at my program, then had a Q&A with the MFAs, which is when I asked him. I remember he never took his hand off his right cheek, like it was glued there. When someone would ask him a question, he’d stand still with his eyes closed and his hand covering half his face, speaking in a dreamy, quiet voice. It was odd, but kinda relaxing. And he was very humble.
One of the other smart things he said was about the writer’s relationship to his/her subconscious. He said it’s like riding a horse. The horse is separate from you with its own will. But through daily practice it will work with you, and surprise you sometimes.

….It’s only one reinterpretation away from working its way back into my heart, very much like the feelings I have for Star Trek post-reboot—I feel like I have space to love what I love, hate what I hate, while not being beholden to defend the weakest parts….
I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but I don’t want to hold on to any frustration and disappointment for Mr. Lucas any longer. He could make a thousand more Star Wars films, each more terrible than the last, and they wouldn’t do anything to diminish the feeling inside my chest that wells up when I see an AT-AT stepping out of a Hoth blizzard or hear the sound of a lightsaber being brought to bear.

James Joyce is such a difficult author to read! The novel was incredibly interesting and beautifully written. There was a lot of depth and a lot to analyze. We read an excerpt of Finnegans Wake and it seems that towards the end of his life Joyce was absolutely losing his mind! He certainly is an interesting man, I find him to be quite brilliant. But in all honesty, Portrait is another book I have to pick up at some other time and reread to truly understand it. I have to be in a certain mood to read this modernist novels! They are so detached from everything and take you down so many different paths to lead you to a conclusion…I’m not ready for them! I feel its perhaps because I am in a juncture in my life where I want the answers in my face and everything straightforward. A modernist novel just doesn’t do that for you.

It isn’t so much not having anything to read as it is not being able to read it as well as I need.
I think that would be a great idea ndi, Start it on Jan. 1 and see how well we all do. I’d have to be a somewhat informal contest seeing as how the only real way so judge who’s faster and better-er is if we read the exact same books in the same order and test how much we remember from what we read and that’s just too much work.

I actually didn’t do that, it was a refrance to an episode of south park where the boys have to write essays on The Old Man and the Sea. With zero time to accomplish this they wire Mexican day ladorers at home depot to "Read the book and write an essay" which they do by first reading the book ("There’s an old man and me goes to the sea to catch the feesh, but he no catch feesh, then me catch feesh but then feesh get away.") and write a letter to their essays.

The last book I’ve read was the Barsoom Series, by Edgar Rice Burroughs. If you aren’t familiar with him, he created Tarzan, the well known Jungle dude. Ironically, in both series the main character’s name was John. It’s a very enjoyable read but can get kind of redundant in theme. The thing I hated most though was that it was stuffed with Colonialism and was basically the start of what I call "The Last Samurai Syndrome". It’s a good series, really, and I recommend for anyone liking the classic swashbuckling, get the girl and save the planet type stories. It could be likened to space operas, though the Mars Civ at that time was in decline, the planet dying. Anyway, READ IT!

What a dire, dire book. I don’t mean in terms of writing quality, just in terms of tone. The first story is about murder, the second is about rape, the third is about selling one’s soul (metaphorically) for happiness, and while I’m still not quite sure what the fourth one’s about, I’d say the core theme is not really knowing the people you love.
King is known for writing some dark stuff, but this collection really takes the cake. Just After Sunset wasn’t even this drab.

Fun read. Threre’s a bunch of stuff that got changed like when plot points occurred and what order they visited the worlds in. I’m not all that crazy about the art style, the character designs don’t look anywhere near as good as the anime’s plus the facial expressions aren’t as diverse or over the top as the show’s.
There’s a lot more naked breasts in the manga than the anime.

field negro: Honoring Recy, and some Thor-ny movie issues. (
http://field-negro.blogspot.com/2011/02/honoring-recy-and-some-thor-ny-movie.html)
Absolutely loved this comment:
LACoincidental said…
Field, first let me say – there are no words for the things that woman suffered. No words, its just digusting.
On to Stringer Bell in a Viking helmet. Now, let me say that I am a big time comic book geek. I can literally break down the philosophical difference between the Golden Age and the Silver Age Green Lantern and influence of New Age thought on the Silver Surfer. Super-duper Nerd.
So I can say with great authority:
1. The comic is vastly different from Norse Mythology. In Norse Mythology – Balder, not Thor was the big bad boy on the Block. Stan Lee picked Thor over boulder because smacking aliens and monsters with a hammer made Thor less of a Superman rip-off than the Lord of Light.
Throughout history, Marvel take lots of liberties with the mythology. Hell, in the comics Thor’s technically half Greek. (His mother is Gaea.) Also, Thor ended the Ragnarok
cycle. How you stave off the imminent threat of death is truly comic book stuff.
Hell Marvel made Samuel Jackson Nick Fury in the Ultimate Marvel line because the writer just thought Jules Winnfield was damn cool. Iron Man was Black for a hot minute, as was Superman, Captain America and the Green Lantern. Nothing unusual here.
2. Heimdall, in terms of mythology and the comic is a really minor character. I’m talking you have to squint to find him in a comic book. Volstagg is more popular (we love drunken fat people with superpowers.) Heimdall’s powers are super-strength and uber-hyper senses, particularly eyesight and hearing. He can literally see things coming from hundreds of miles away. Heimdall’s job is to stand guard at the gates of Asgard and ward off any invaders. He’s the first line of defense. He’s essentially the doorman/marine guard. Again, its not like they got Louis Gossett Jr. as Odin or Terrance Stamp as Loki.
All and all, much ado about nothing. Its race baiting gates losing their cookies over a minor issue. I remember how the message boards in 2000 were a twitter because the Black Green Lantern – John Stewart was selected for the Justice League cartoon. A bunch of losers whining about fictional characters — a minor ones at that.
I’ve been a fanboy since I was 5, and I admit that this crap doesn’t matter and these white people need to get a life.

Just finished Ron Rash’s short story collection Burning Bright. There are several other novels by that name and a 2010 movie–none of which are related.
Rash’s stories are mostly set around South Carolina, some during Civil War times, some in modern times. It goes back and forth between depraved rural chicken thieves and depraved rural meth addicts. The stories are well written, but usually end with the hope that you’ll be shocked at how nonchalant the characters are about their actions. There’s little to relate to or feel sympathetic about because of that. Worth reading, but not great.

Star Trek Mirror Universe – Glass Empires: "The Worst of Both Worlds." Good stuff, though confusing because they let things get mixed up with the Star Trek mirror universe novels and so you’ve got completely different canons within the Mirror Universe stories – this one, in which Captain Picard is working as an archaeologist for the Cardassians and the Stargazer is still his ship, and others in which he’s still on some version of the Enterprise.

Mass Effect Retribution by Drew Karpyshyn. Pretty good read, showing how far the Illusive Man will go achieve his agenda. Reuniting David Anderson with Kahlee Sanders (who was in Revelation with Anderson and in Ascension) was a good move and showed a bit more depth into their ‘what might of been’ relationship. I ‘think’ this is set after Mass Effect 2, which if it is, does lay down what could be canon in Mass Effect 3. If you like the Mass Effect games and comics, I recommend the Mass Effect novels (Revelation (set a few years prior to the first game), Ascension (set a few months prior to the start of Mass Effect 2) and Retribution (set after Mass Effect 2 imo)) as they do add more depth to the games.

I read The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner.
By scheming and theft, the Thief of Eddis has become King of Attolia. Eugenides (yoo-JEN-ə-deez) wanted the queen, not the crown, but he finds himself trapped in a web of his own making.
Then he drags a naive young guard into the center of the political maelstrom. Poor Costis knows he is the victim of the king’s caprice, but his contempt for Eugenides slowly turns to grudging respect. Though struggling against his fate, the newly crowned king is much more than he appears. Soon the corrupt Attolian court will learn that its subtle and dangerous intrigue is no match for Eugenides.

It is, most unfortunately. I’m taking a 20th century American fiction class now and naturally the theme we touch upon (once again) is modernism. It is really interesting relating back and forth between the class I took last semester (which happened to be 20th century British fiction).
Aside from it being a requirement though, there are plenty of books that I read knowing that I won’t enjoy them. I do so, in order to just have the ability to talk about them. Haha.

It’s philosophy, by Friedrich Nietzsche (German, 1844-1900.) As for whether or not it’s a good book, well, I’ve found it interesting reading so far, but I suppose it depends on one’s personal taste. As far as philosophy goes, it’s certainly some of the most unusual you’ll ever find, in terms of presentation. As the title suggests, it is not (for the most part) presented as a narrative, nor as a scholarly text or poetry, but rather as a series of speeches, filled with aphorisms. It is famous for Zarathustra’s declaration that "God is dead," though this only begins to scratch the surface. Wikipedia can, of course, give you more details on Nietzsche, as well as about Thus Spoke Zarathustra itself. A bit of trivia – Thus Spoke Zarathustra served as the inspiration for Richard Strauss’s tone poem Also Sprach Zarathustra, which became known as the theme of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Oh, and of course, like any such work that is translated from another language, I suppose what you get out of it is in part based on which translation you read, assuming, of course, that you aren’t able to read it in the original language. The one that I’ve been reading is the 2005 edition, with a translation by Graham Parkes.
P.S.: sorei – what did you think of Exodus? I don’t think I’ve read any of the "Vulcan’s Soul" books yet. As for Star Trek, I’ve been reading Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Lost Era: The Buried Age, but I haven’t finished it yet.

Uzumaki vol. 3.
This was really good. While it was kinda ridiculous at times it didn’t really matter what with the tone and imagery being so disturbing. Junji Ito’s artwork is both beautiful and creepy. Only real problem is the fact that there’s a bonus story at the end. Why the hell put it there when there’s no more threat or mystery left because the story is all done and the fate of pretty much every character has already been reviled? Couldn’t have been for space because they had space for it in the back anyway.

I’m a huge Junji Ito fan. ^__^ I have a lot of his short stories if you ever feel like reading them. He does a lot of lovecraftian type stuff, which I really get into, and I kind of love how weird and disgusting he is willing to me. His art is genuinely beautiful and it’s such a cool contrast.

Started a Greek Mythology book. But the thing is while it looks like a very good book (in 2 volumes no less) it keeps interrupting itself with the author’s theories and beliefs on how the myths were formed and what they "truly" mean. Often instead of explaining they just send you to a later part of the book and this pisses me off. I just wanted something that would tell me all the stories.

I liked it. It chronicles film/tv based off the stories of Lovecraft, most of them sub-par of course but there’s also an art section and interviews. I’ve been watching a lot of "Lovecraftian Cinema" lately because of it. There’s especially a lot of bts info on Re-Animator. The Revenge of the Radioactive Lady by Elizabeth Stuckey-French
It’s about a woman who, without her knowledge, was given a vitamin drink containing radioisotopes as part of a government study in the 60s (which is based off a real study that happened). In present day, she’s hunting down the doctor who did it and becomes entangled with his family, including his grandson, who has Asperger’s and is building a nuclear breeder reactor in his backyard shed.
The premise is interesting, as is the research that went into it. But despite containing rape, incest, murder, children with cancer, nuclear fallout, and old people sex, the book is lighthearted Jennifer Weiner beach reading, which was not what I was looking for at all. However, it might be fun for someone else who’s looking for a quick read.

Vonnegut I’m familiar with. I have an appreciation for his work. Can’t for the life of me get why a "chick lit" author would get into it with Kurt Vonnegut, who’s body of work is very much divorced from that genre.

It started at a lit conference (where tempers always seem to get out of hand :-\) when an audience member asked the panel of authors what message they wanted to get across in their work. Weiner said, very irritated, that she didn’t know she was responsible for delivering a message to humanity. Vonnegut responded, "Then leave."
He was near death at that point, and fit the grumpy old man stereotype. But still. She not only antagonized the audience, but also whiffed on a softball question that could have gotten more readers interested in her work. What author, even a chick lit author, can’t at least BS an answer about one of their themes?
They kept at each other for the rest of the conference, which is chronicled in Steve Almond’s book Not That You Asked.

You can’t even compare. The only thing comparable is, imho, the first agfhanistan war, between the Soviets and the Mudjahidins.
If you want my opinion, the US attacked the wrong country. they should have dealt with Pakistan first, as it is the rear base of these talibans A-holes. then Enter Afghanistan and deal with the remaining idiots.

Thing is most taliban these days are mostly pakistani, arab, and chechen. Most are just untrained brainwashed young people sent to the slaughter in suicide squads. Others, such as the Chechens, are trained by Al Qaeda and others and are pros at this shit. Yeah the Afghan-Soviet War was like Vietnam, Soviets seem to have the advantage then Mujahadeen start using new hit and run tactics and get foreign aid and bigger country has a long, painful, humiliating war. Lucas didn’t want anyone of the main guys to die but it’s kinda hard to do the rawrrrr thing in a book so I guess that’s why they picked the Wookiee. If it makes you feel any better Lucas don’t give a flying fuck about the books or comics or even the previous cartoons by the way the current show ignores them almost completely.

She’s one of the artists I’ve been fallowing since I gained full full internet access so upon seeing it at he library I had to read it.
The book itself is a kids word book but not enough words to be a chapter book and while there’s a bunch of illustrations it’s not a comic, graphic novel, or picture book if that makes any sense.
The several pictures are a nice simple children’s style that’s nothing super but not terrible though she did reuse the same handful of faces far too many times for my taste.

It’s his son and another guy. The first book they wrote was House Atreides. House Harkonnen was second. House Corrino was third.
I lost track of them after that as they just kept churning them out.
The original Herbert novels are much better. They get a 10 out of 10 from me. The son’s works get a 2 out of 10.

It’s like toys story and small soldiers and Indian and the Cupboard and the Christmas toy and every other toys alive story all rolled into one.
It tells the tale of the Boogeyman kidnapping a boy and a company forming a rescue party to go after him. Thing is once they enter the world in the closet they turn into real versions that they’re based on. So the toy soldier is a real soldier, the wooden duck on wheels can finally fly, the teddy bear is a real bear, and the boy’s puppy who tormented and chewed on everyone is now the smallest of the group. It’s alright. I’ll try to read more if I can but aren’t so desperate to hunt the next parts down.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.
And so begins my last fall semester of college. This is actually the first Twain novel I’ve read and I’m still on the fence between really loving it and really hating it. Twain is brilliant in some senses – a lot of social commentary is going on within this novel on race and I do have to give him kudos for the use of the vernacular throughout the novel because it brings the entire story further down to earth. I’m bothered however by the lack of progression and lack of transcendence over these racial issues for both Huck and Jim within the novel. Nothing changes, is ultimately the feel I get from this piece… is it supposed to have this feeling? or am I bringing it way to into a modern context in thinking that the portrayal of a free Jim is too weak and Twain should have that been more keen in believing that more could have been done?

Sadly most movies inspired by the works of HPL are not really good or faithful to the "mood" of his works. The only one that comes close is, funnily, Reanimator, but the short story was already something different from most of what Lovecraft wrote. I’ve heard good things on the episode of masters of horrors directed by Stuart Gordon and based on "Dreams in the Witchhouse" though.
Only film to capture the essence of lovecraftian tales, in my opinion, is "In the mouth of Madness". Most adaptations are too gory, or too cheesy to be good. Somebody should explain to producers that lovecraft would have hated to see torrents of blood in movies based on his works.

I’ve seen the MoH Dreams in the Witch House and it was pretty terrible. Since reading The Lurker in the Lobby: The Guide to Lovecraftian Cinema, I’ve been watching a lot of movies based off his works. A notable entry imo would be The Resurrected based off The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Dan O’ Bannon directs and does a good job of sticking pretty close to the story though I hear producers messed with it a bit, ruining it in O’ Bannon’s eyes. It doesn’t matter to me if they’re bad movies. I’m mostly curious how the Lovecraftian influence affects the films. One of the worst I’ve seen so far was Bad Moon’s Lurking Fear also starring Jeffrey Combs.
And the last thing I read was "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Poe

Right now, I’m hesitating between re-reading lovecraft’s "book of reason" before going on a scenario writing binge for Call of Cthulhu or re-reading for the time in nearly 15 years "It" by King…
Then I could do both and alternate…

I’m about to finish Michael Sandel’s The Case Against Perfection: Ethics in the Age of Genetic Engineering. Sandel presents a cohesive and quite compelling argument against genetic enhancement. He is particularly concerned about the implications of genetic modification for notions of giftedness in, eg, sports and other ‘natural’ talents; responsibility and choice; and the covert reintroduction of eugenicism, under a liberal (not necessarily in the American sense) flag. Sandel writes lucidly and he is always worth listening to, whether or not you share his conclusions.

It can be, but stick at it as it does pick up (I’m looking at Shu’s campaign against the Man tribes of the south here). Shows just how cunning and intelligent the great Sleeping Dragon, Chuko Liang, was.

That got me at first. Take the Ruler of Wei… In Dynasty Warriors/Kessen/etc, spelled/pronounced as Cao Cao (Cow Cow), but tradtionally it’s Ts’ao Ts’ao (Sow Sow). Still, it’s a great read and the fact it’s based on the actual events 1800 years ago, just makes the novel and the games inspired by it, a better experience for me.

This. I have to say, we french produced some of the most interesting cases of psychos back in the day…Clovis (Who killed one of his own men for a simple pot), Charles the Hammer (everything’s in the name), who beat the ever lovin’ shit out of the muslims in Poitier, Philippe the Fair, who slaughtered the knight templars for a treasure he didn’t get, and got cursed for his troubles, Gilles de Rais, who kicked the shit out of Doc Faustus’s compatriots along Joan of Ark before going on a child murdering rampage. And then Fran???ois L’ollonais, and let’s not forget the Cardinal Richelieu, who may not be "Tim Curry" crazy as in the three musketeers (the one with Kevin "I played Robin in Batman and Robin" O’Donnell), but he was a serious case of "Pity ? What the hell does that word mean ?".
And I’m sure I could find others 😀

A few poems by Dylan Thomas. I’ve never read him before, but he has an interesting take on his poetry. I guess I enjoyed him, more so his nitty gritty poetry… then again I think most of his poetry is very gritty.
Currently reading ‘We the Living’ by Ayn Rand. I can’t say I’m enjoying it too much though. Some of it has to do with a bias I have formed on her, after I was informed of right-wingers enjoying her views on things. The other part of it has to do with the just the novels general tone… I think she exaggerates too much and it’s slowly transforming into a romance. Bleeeeeeh.

I’m a huge fan of non-fiction books, I don’t know why but I can’t settle into a good fiction. I recently read Turning Pro by author that I cannot remember. The professional always gets to work early, if you’re on time then you are late!
Hehe, I’ve recently read Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. It’s a book about people who achieve extraordinarily like the beatles, Bill Gates, or even geniuses. It takes 10 years to attain mastery kids :O

And The Mountains Echoed, By Khaled Hosseini.
This wasn’t his best, but it was certainly interesting seeing how all these characters and stories intertwined with one another. Could have been read like a series of short stories to be honest.

I’ve just finished Norwegian Wood from one of my favorite writers of all time, Haruki Murakami. I was initially skeptical before picking up this book at the library. Reviews spoke of how it deviated from the surreal elements of some of his works, and focused on a more realistic approach that echoes the nostalgia of the late 1960s. Did it detract from the novel’s premise? Nope…it was a well-written piece of work.

A Father’s Love
http://www.amazon.com/Fathers-Love-Unrelenting-Battle-Abducted/dp/B00C01HY42
It usually takes me a while to finish a book, but I finished this one in 2 days because I was just so engrossed in it.
Copy pasted from description:
What would you do if your four-year-old son was abducted—by your spouse?
In June 2004, David Goldman took his Brazilian wife, Bruna, and their son, Sean, to the airport. She told him that they would be returning to New Jersey after a two-week vacation. Once there, however, Bruna informed Goldman that she was staying in Brazil—and keeping Sean.
In the courts, Goldman found himself outmaneuvered by the legal machinations of Bruna’s new husband, a member of one of Brazil’s most powerful families. But Goldman never gave up, appealing to the media and the highest levels of the U.S. government for help. A Father’s Love is the story of Goldman’s incredible five-year battle to reunite with his abducted child – and an inspiring celebration of an ordinary man’s love for his son.

Well, if you like a series of stories, where the storyline is followed book after book, I have to recommend:
Sandman Slim series
Repairman Jack
Iron Druid
and, most of all, the Dresden files series by Jim Butcher. Also, don’t forget the "in between" novels on many of these, which repair holes in the plotlines.

I just finished the first half of The Penguin History of the Second World War by Peter Calvocoressi. Bloody great long thing it is but the first half deals with the European / North African theatres. Very good it is too and every third or fourth page there’s some terrible statistic about deaths or refugees which makes you think about the horrific cost of it all. The second half deals with the Pacific Theatre but I need a break before I tackle that.
