hi everybody,

I'm curious if you know any other saferoom(-like) tracks apart the allmighty ones from resident evil, silent hill, dino crisis and parasite eve series? I also know all candidates from all final fantasy soundtracks.

but there must be more (survival) horror(-like) games that need to offer the player a safe place to rest and relax from time to time. when stuck out alone in a world of terror, these ordinary rooms are always most welcome and comfortable. what I especially like next to stocking up, reloading, re-arranging items, healing, reading journals or files, taking a deep breath and heading out again is enjoying the special gloomy atmosphere for a while, which can be everything between soothing and frightening (in a non-intense way). you get it.

LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS! (not necessarily original saferoom-tracks only, but also similar music in general = slow, repetitive melodies creating this typical mood)

some random and boring background information about myself:
I used to listen to the saferoom track from re1 for hours on repeat back in the days, having recorded it manually as a loop on a 45min audio cassette (back then, you had to connect your psx with a cable to your stereo, reach the desired spot in the game, press record and remain silent, recording in real time... nostalgic... if anybody remembers ;-). these tracks always improved my overall mood plus my ability to study, focus, ponder or work, if needed. thanks to them I made it through school, graduated from university 6 years later and now they still help me to "endure" my daily work-life. and finally, to complete my oddity: "back in the days", I was a teenager, now I'm almost 28 and never changed my habits (listening to serenity from re4 right now :-). so, young freaks in here, rest assured: the passion of vgm may just stick with you. never let it go!

ps: another one which comes to my mind right now is the track playing in the original VERY FIRST demo1 disc which came out with the psx in 1995. it played in the tech demo, showing a manta ray majestatically swimming through the sea. great piano tune. anybody remembers? should also be on youtube, if anyone's curious. I ripped it :)

If you haven't heard it, you might like "Workshop" (also sometimes badly translated as "Factory" ) from Vagrant Story. It's basically that game's equivalent to a safe room but with the ability to make weapons and armor and the music is similar in tone to Resident Evil's. It might develop into something darker than you're looking for, though.

arthurgolden: wow, thanks for this quite big collection of suggestions! there are some cool tracks in there, especially since I think saferoom tracks don't always have to be frightening or mysterious, but can also be more like "feeling at home", appearing in menus, "base camps", or, well, homes etc. My favourite from your list is the first one though, Jellyfish Sea.

Basically, I go around this forum and say how great Sakimoto is like it's my job. I fear it might become annoying, but then I think probably nobody notices me much anyway. You should definitely check out Vagrant Story, it's generally agreed upon to be a classic. You should know it's very dark and somewhat less melodic and more ambient, but give it a shot for sure.

Thanks Volque, most of these were new to me!

Btw, I also got some additions:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urmzzR_JKSU&feature=related - this is a typical safe room track.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COEo3G-Modk - this somehow belongs here, too. It's magical, the magical sound shower.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFrJvW5CvB0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2Fnwx4onzQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9EpYmwBASo
...the last three are too lighthearted for a classic safe room, they are rather "base/home" tracks, but very soothing.

Here's my favorite Safe Room track from the RE series.

Resident Evil: Dead Aim - Save Room (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PO28Ff-1CLs)

It sounds simplistic but it works.

I will post more songs later until I remember a few more; this thread is too awesome to let it die soon.

Edit: Here's something quick I remembered:

Etrian Odyssey II - Having Momentary Peace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8uh81N1Wh4)

Icebladey

The Dead Aim one, OMG!! Thought I would be the only one, because most ppl don't even let this count as a song! I works best at night, with only the blue light of the monitor illuminating the room. Feels like being on a carrier :)

Serenity from RE4 comes close to this.

My 4ever favourite would be the original RE1 one though. Somebody on youtube described it as transporting a message of "unfulfillable longing", which is the best describtion I have ever heard.

I would love to give more links here, but unfortunately, I don't know any more... :-/
I'm also puzzled why the response in here is so modest. Judging from the extensive discussions and postings on youtube, there indeed ARE several ppl like us out there...

EDIT: The is another one, from an almost ancient PC game called "Jagged Alliance". It is the base music, not gloomy, more with a stratetic/tactical flair, but it also works. It is upped nowhere, so I recorded it, here you go:
http://rapidshare.com/files/402983212/Jagged_Alliance_-_Bush_Base.mp3.wma.html

Hi Volque, hi rest,

here is maybe the rarest saferoom/home/base-like track on earth. It is from the unnoticed PSX game "Diver's Dream", I think noone besides me has ever played it. Next to nothing can be found about it online, not a single video is uploaded on youtube.
It was not bad, but overall a bit boring. However, it featured a lovely storyline with two possible endings and some splendid music! And thus, I present you with the track playing at the main character's home. Tell me if you want to hear some more tracks. The others play underwater and have a heavy "dolphin-touch".

Enjoy the tune, it's a comfy loop!

I have another safe room piece for you, which is kind of rare indeed. It is the safe room theme from resident evil 1 dual shock edition, released in japan. Hello again Icebladey; thank you for your recommendation - it's a really good safe room song; it really evokes a comfort feeling.

Well, I've got this new one, it's from Killer7. This one plays in different parts of the game, but mostly in "lobbies" areas, so this would fit perfectly for a "base" song.

I have another one, this time not from a game, but from the intrumental artist Patrick O'Hearn. It is a perfect safe room song (even the title fits: "Let's move on"). Patrick has a faible for this kind of music, it is really worth checking out his work. Apart from that, I have several other songs coming to mind from games and beyond. I'll get back here soon.

Here it is: RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting (http://rapidshare.com/files/417899770/03_Lets_Move_On.wma.html)

Hey Volque, cool to see you back. As you can see, there wasn't much going on here without you in the meantime :-D

The Yakuza 3 track is new to me!

Here is another rare piece from the PS3 game Demon's Souls. There is an OST which of course lacks the one specific safe room piece found in the game. Here in the forum I found a great unofficial score with all missing tracks - EXCEPT this same single piece again :-O I kept searching but without success, it seemed like noone bothered to rip or record it, which is actually understandable, as it only plays once in the beginning as you create your character, then never again. So, I had no choice but pull out my audio cables and record it myself - analoge quality. For some reason the quality turned out unsatisfying, with some small but frequent clicks in the background. I tryed out multiple settings, and finally chose the best one. Maybe sometime a more professional guy will make a better recording.

So far, this is all we have. I named the track "Soul Creation". Classic safe room ambience. I included the standard Nexus theme as well, which is also quite fitting. As that one is from the official OST, it at least has good quality.

Awesome, I've been trying to find the soul creation song theme too, thanks Icebladey. Last time I just let it play from the PS3, and helped me to fell asleep like baby.

This time I got an ace up my sleeve too, this is from a movie called Gunhed; it's more like an aftermath song or somewhat in the vein of base theme, but it really sounds great.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1NRQSEXP

Can't wait to hear you're next suggestion.

Icebladey
03-19-2011, 10:10 PM
Hey Volque, wow that one was an ace indeed! If such kind of music comes from movies or regular artists, and not games, it can get even more interesting albeit more subtle.

Let's stay on this road. Here is a true base song from my absolute favorite stand-alone-music composer Patrick O'Hearn. Can you feel it?

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2O3Q46NQ

Keep it up man! :-)

PS: The fact that you really used the Soul Creation theme from Demon's Souls to fall asleep makes it official: in that respect, we are similar. except that I used headphones :-D

Volque
03-24-2011, 03:31 AM
That song you posted is awesome Icebladey, its kinda reminiscent of Vangelis soundtracks; talking about songs that make us fall sleep I've got this one from Coded Soul: Uke Keigareshi Idea, haven't played the game yet, but I bet this could be from a base or a town, anyways, I love the sound from this one, it's sort of like staring at the sunset of a barren valley, you got the hint ;)

Anyhow, this one has knocked up some many times that is now a favorite of mine.

Ahhhhh, sunset in a barren valley, yes... I can feel it :-) Really beautiful. Saferoom themes to me always have had the effect of sending me to the land of slumber easily. But they can also help to concentrate, study, or even doing monotonous work (like shoveling snow for example).

I'd like to present another piece from Mr. O'Hearn today. It is more comfy this time, rather than mysterious like the last one.
I heard some guy saying it makes him see himself slowly falling down a cliff, in a floating way. At the beginning I was surprised, but after some time....
But still it makes for a great hideout- or retreat-theme.

MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VSKYC6QX)

(good speakers or headphones are essential for this, as you don't hear the neat baseline otherwise)

I hope there are many more to come from you (and others, of course)! - be it safe room, base or town themes, or sleeping themes :-D

PS: Btw, that lobby area track you proposed from Killer 7 some longer time ago, I still have this in my head. And on my harddrive, of course^^

PPS: Are those candidates from Parasite Eve (1&2) and Shenmue (also 1&2) already known to you?

Volque
03-25-2011, 05:26 AM
I gotta say that one was awesome, can't remember where I heard a similar bassline before, it's on the tip of my tongue. But the song reminds me more of a cave or a subterranean place, it's very cool nonetheless.

I stumbled into this one earlier, it's from the adventure game Hotel Dusk: Room 215; it has the mysterious aura around it, like a stop in the middle of a desert as the song name implies.

YouTube - [Hotel Dusk: Room 215] 01 -- Desert Highway (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viKrP65IwEc)

Hi Volque!
Yeah, that one sounds interesting. Something completely different!
As a compensation for the long wait I have several songs here, all from Shenmue and Parasite Eve series. It's a collection of all the safe room-themed songs in these games. If you happen to like a particular one, tell me which one and I can provide you some background info on it. They are all very different, but with a softer/lighter tone. One of them also is desert-themed, in a way.

Hey Icebladey, how was your holiday? Hope you passed a good time. It took me a while to respond you; I was having vacations too, heh.

Indeed, I checked the awesome safe room tracks you posted; I found the Parasite Eve 2 ones appealing. I also found another track from Parasite Eve 2 that it sounds like it could belong to a "abandoned town in the middle of the desert" part of the game -I haven't played the game yet, but I'm guessing-.

YouTube - Parasite Eve 2 OST - Ghost Town (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0n-HE1Hm2A)

Anyhow, I have new suggestions too, these come from the game: El Shaddai: Ascension to Metatron. The only way I can describe these songs is that they have this ethereal feeling -if you already known about this game, you might know what I'm referring to-, but anyway, here they go. Hope you like them. See you soon.

Oh, and you're completely right about "Ghost town", it's set in an abandoned run down desert town called "Dryfield". Scary but still with a blues touch.
You will also like this one I think, at least the first part of it: YouTube - Parasite Eve II Soundtrack - Disc 2 - 31 Epilogue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGruU_SotrQ)

I have a new suggestion, I've been listening to it for a while now, found it by coincidence (I tiped "Hideout" and '"OST" into youtube while looking for safe room music):
YouTube - Assassin's Creed 2 OST - Track 34 - Hideout (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0SXGlPQLsc&feature=related)
From the name you can already tell it's indeed a safe room theme, but I've never played that game. It took me a while to figure out the melody in this track, but once you get it, it will stick into your head :-)

This one is also not bad, at least the beginning:
YouTube - Home In Florence - Assassin's Creed 2 Soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ms51sdZa8lE&playnext=1&list=PLA1140413E742D783)
I have also found a version with only the first part turned into a smooth loop, which is good as this is the best part:
YouTube - Assassin's Creed 2 Home In Florence (changed game soundtrack) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvAogx7YrMw)

I have something else in my mind, but I need to upload that one because it's not out there. Next time.
Oh, I'll fly over to the states at the end of the week (unfortunately not for holiday this time). So I may take a week or so to get back here.

Enjoy! Looking forward to your new suggestions!

Hi folks!

First of all sorry for digging out this super ancient threat, but I just wanted to let you know that I created a little youtube channel specifically for save room music, which I composed myself. If you are interested in dark, gloomy yet sort of relaxing music, check out "New Resident Evil Save Room Music" !

Left Behind In Grey - Alternate Resident Evil Save Room Music - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNWzVhksFOs&list=UU7syOdAdBpyPn3ZZ_ozJo3g)

PS: Since I'm not sure whether this is the right forum corner for this, I'll also create a thread under "Artistic Discussion". Hope that's ok...

PPS: And yes, I know, this is just a freaky and nerdy as it can get. Shouldn't bother anymore browsing through this delicate forum, though ^^
