After our games here in Vancouver recently, I popped in my NBC DVD of the Beijing ceremonies and rewatched them. Wow. What a show. I think my only gripe was that it may have been too big. With the Vancouver ceremonies, David Atkins was going for a more intimate feel and I think I prefered that approach (yeah, so what we had a cauldron malfunction, but at least they addressed that at the start of the closing ceremony :) ) I'm looking forward to the shows London and Sochi put on in the coming years.

Thanks for posting. I love tracks 6 to 14 on the opening ceremony disc. The Athletes March/parade of Nations is a good one too. Still haven't listened to the 3rd disc.

The download link is down, but over there i linked to some youtube vids of the ceremony to know what kind of music it is, so i can upload it to you or anyone else, if desired.

It was a very special moment for me. I was 6 years old at the time, and are some of the earliest memories i remember now, because that whole ceremony and in particular that segment made an impact on me. When i saw that giant Hercules for the first time, i shivered and screamed with fear, no joking =-O, and they are probably the first moments that influenced on me to like and recognize, after all these years, to realize how important can be the music combined with images.

It's hard to imagine that four years have passed since the last games. Really, the time goes by in a blink of an eye, but it's nice to have this album just to remember the opening ceremony.
I especially like the music part sequence of 'A Moonlit Night on the Spring River'. Yes, i know that it is based on a folk song, but the way the music was orchestrated is so sublime, that it never fails to thrill me even after all these years. Merit to Qigang Chen for that work.

Holy flippin flip!! The Beijing Olympic ceremony made me cry and cry and cry...so...much...tears...
And Tan Dun and Qigang are very wonderfull. Seriously Qigang's soundtrack for Under the hawthorne tree is within reach from where i am sitting by my computer, as are many soundtracks, but i mean, it's not just because he was the last to study under Messiaen...sorry this is just so great, i'm so excited.

The music for the Chinese Olympics, as well as the opening ceremony itself, was vastly superior to the British one. I was fortunate to be at both in person as well as to watch the televised versions. The latest one was a pretentious, vulgar, atonal mess of (bar some) awful hip pop songs and cryptic pop culture references. The chinese opening was profound and, like the Barcelona opening ceremony, incredibly ahead of its time. The music here by Tan Dun with Confucius texts and sublime music is divine.
