Ivan Reitman to Direct 'Ghostbusters 3'!

Good news, everybody! Whilst doing the press line at the National Board of Review's red carpet event, MTV's Josh Horowitz volleyed a series of Ghostbusters 3 questions off of producer Ivan Reitman and ended up getting a nice chunk of actual news instead of further conjecture. When asked about the script, Ivan confirmed that Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky have already turned in a completed draft for part 3 and that a new draft is currently being worked through, much to the delight of all involved. When asked about a potential start date, Ivan revealed that he hopes to start shooting it within the next year.

With this news it looks like what was once assumed to be Ghostbusters for a new generation is instead a reunion for the principals involved with the first two films. Reitman, of course, produced and directed both the 1984 original and it's 1989 sequel, so it's comforting to know that he is now returning over twenty years later for the new film. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Sigourney Weaver are all, barring some kind of cataclysmic, joy-hating turn of events, returning as well (I haven't seen confirmation on Ernie Hudson). And if that's not good enough news, even Rick Moranis is said to be willing to leave retirement to reprise his role as their accountant, Louis Tully!

Given that it has been twenty years since the last Ghostbusters motion picture (the characters have transferred to a handful of other mediums since then, most notably the recent video game made by Atari), I'm sure that Columbia pictures would like the new film to function as a possible gateway for further films, but with Reitman and friends all coming back for it, we can at least rest assured that it won't solely be a passing of the torch.

Oh, and as far as the Bill Murray as a ghost rumor that Sigourney Weaver started is concerned, Ivan Reitman wouldn't comment other than to say that there are some "very cool things in the new draft."

Ghostbusters 3 has been in the rumor mill for years... hell, check Dan Aykroyd's filmography on The Blues Brothers 2000, has listed there Ghostbusters 3 - 1999.

There has been a lot of talk about what Ghostbusters 3 would be about, and I admit I'd like to see it. Just gonna wait until more information is available before jumping on the bandwagon.

Dan Aykroyd have had a script for Ghostbusters 3 in the works since Ghostbusters 2.

During the 1990s, Aykroyd wrote a script for a potential third film in the series.[20] The concept reportedly would have the characters transported to an alternate version of Manhattan called Manhellton,[21][22] where the people and places are hellish versions of their originals and they meet the devil.[22] At the time, Aykroyd stated that the studio was interested though the principal actors were not. It would feature a new, younger group of Ghostbusters as characters Ray, Egon, and Winston (who is referred to as Dr. Winston), who struggle to keep the business going after Peter leaves to be with Dana. In reviewing the proposed script, IGN stated that the new Ghostbusters were "practically interchangeable", lacked personality conflicts, and were not "especially funny or charming". It also found the script to be too full of technobabble and Venkman's appearance at the end is noted to be the "best gag" in the script.[22] Over the years, various rumors have floated around about the film, including reports stating that Murray was the only original Ghostbuster not interested as he disliked sequels,[23] and that Ramis wanted Ben Stiller to join the cast,[21][24] During a 2009 interview, Ramis stated that the project stalled due to lack of interest and motivation to do it.[20] Both Ramis and Aykroyd have confirmed that the script would call for a new group of younger Ghostbusters taking the lead, with Aykroyd stating "There’ll be a whole new generation that has to be trained and a leader that you'll all love when you meet her. There'll be lots of cadets, boys and girls who'll be learning how to use the neuron splitter and the inter-planet interceptor - new tools to enable them to slip from dimension to dimension."[25]

Production company Columbia Pictures hired Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (both writers for the The Office) to script the film.[26][20] Aykroyd confirmed that Murray, Weaver and Hudson will reprise their roles, noting that Murray agreed to return to his character only if Hudson's was expanded to be equal to the other three leads.[25] Ramis confirmed that Moranis would not be returning due to the latter's stepping back from the entertainment business.[27] Weaver herself has alternatively stated that she did not expect to be part of the film,[28] or that she may make a small appearance at the end.[20] The plot will involve the paranormal researchers "reopening" their ghost removal service after it has been closed for quite a few years, with all of original Ghostbusters slated to appear.[20][29] Filming is slated to begin in summer 2010 with a goal of having a 2011 release.[20] In January 2010, Reitman confirmed he would be directing the film, and noted that the first draft of the script was done and the second draft in progress.[30]

I haven't seen any Ghostbuster movies since I was a kid. I think my sister has them on DVD so I'll go ahead and see if she'll let me borrow them.

huh, first time i've heard of this (but then again I rarely ever go searching for info) just finished the game awhile back (playing the game made me want to watch the movies over, even happened to catch some old GB cartoons) If the original cast is there then it might not be bad, can't wait to hear more.

Me and my friend E will be there opening day, and if Bill Murray is a ghost, it will make it an instant classic in my book.

I don't love Ghostbusters to the point of want a sequel, but i've seen the movies a couple of times, and they are always fun to watch.
Needless to say, that i sure hope the original cast actors returns for the new movie.

I forgot how funny it was, but I watched it a couple years back and it is HILARIOUS.

I remember watching Ghost buster when I was kid before and I think they should come up with a sequel and this time they should use 3D

What, so a Ghostbusters Movie could be produced, & set to come out either this year, or
next year?

This should be interesting to see, now that the CGI, & special effects have drastically
improved since the last two Movies were released over two decades ago. I am not as much
as a Fan as I was when I was a Kid, but I will go see it should it be released. I am also
curious as to what the Story will be about.

hi there people viewing this thread- We came we saw we kicked it's ass but we won't be starring in the sequal I think they are finding some other guys to fill the shoes of Bill Murray, Dan Akoryd and Harold Riamis I don't think Ivan Reitman will be directing it but it would be good if they all did it and it's a shame that Elmer Bernstein won't be doing the score Peace out People

Hope this doesn't disappoint, in the same way I hope Tron Legacy doesn't wreck the original in my mind

It feels like this will never escape development hell, and the guys are just getting older. I don't see it ever happening without the "new generation w/ cameos from old characters" angle, and I'm not sure fans would latch onto that.
