Let's talk about the SNES games you own, the games you wish you could have gotten but have always eluded you, and the games that you think are the games that you absolutely need in a good collection and I'm not just talking about the obvious "Super Mario World" type games I'm talking about those hidden gems that weren't very popular or had a small us release.

Here's what I own:
Super Mario World 5/5
Super Mario All Stars 5/5
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars 5/5
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles In Time 5/5
Super Star Wars 4/5
Super Empire Strikes Back 5/5
Super Return of the Jedi 5/5
Indiana Jones Greatest Adventures 3/5
Super Nova 3/5
Gradius III 3/5
Yoshis Cookie 3/5
X-MEN Mutant Apocalypse 2/5
Spider-Man X-Men 2/5
Ultraman 2/5
Jurassic Park 2/5
Dino City 3/5
Frogger 3/5
Monopoly 1/5
Mario Paint (just the cartridge) ???
Super Battleship 3/5
Star Trek The Next Generation 2/5
Super Godzilla 1/5

There are 2 small stores in my area that still sell used snes games and I already got Mario RPG for $19.99 from one. They also have Super Metroid, a Ninja Turtle tournament fighter, Zombies Ate My Neighbours, Yoshi's Island, Double Dragon / Battle Toads 2 pack, Super Ghosts n' Ghouls, Aladdin, and several others I can't remember right now all for around $19 and under with most being $14.

Should I get any of these and are there others I should look out for?

Zombies Ate My Neighbors is better on the Genesis(uncensored, and the music was IMO synthesized better), but it reeks of pure awesomeness. Get that ASAP.

Like mech fighting? Can't recommend Metal Warriors enough. It's like Gundam without all the teen angst. I would also tentatively suggest Mechwarrior as well, but that's a love/hate type of game...you'll fall into one category and probably never leave it. Be forewarned.

TMNT Tournament Fighters isn't bad, especially under $20. If you've got friends to play with, go for it, but it's still a solid buy for one.

If you like space combat, two others to watch out for are Wing Commander and Warpspeed. Warpspeed is more varied(exploration, fetch quests, combat), whereas Wing Commander is straight up combat(done very well, I might add).

Super Ghouls and Ghosts...*evil grin* You will cry many tears of blood and agony playing that game, if you intend to beat it. If you intend to just play casually, it's another good purchase.

EVO(I'm surprised no one mentioned this) will rule your life for a long time. It's addicting, especially if you ever got into the "Sim" games. Keep an eye out for that, pop it in, and wonder where your life disappeared to.

That's enough for now, but that, along with those previously mentioned, should be enough to last you for the rest of your life.:D

Went back to one of the stores and got Super Castlevania IV for $10.99.

They also had
King of Dragons - $15ish
Axelay - $15ish
Ghoul Patrol - $14ish
Batman & Robin - over $12
Ranma - under $8
King of the Monsters - under $7
Wing Commander - about $3

The copies of Aladdin and Turtles in Time were gone and the stack of PS Final Fantasy games had doubled since the last time I was there so they are getting regular business, plus it's the only place in town who's SNES games aren't just 10 different versions of Madden. And they even had the paint mouse and Super Scope.

Monopoly 1/5 (Board Game Sim)

It has IIRC up to 8 players were you past the controller around, you can set a timed game, give players property right from the start, and there are pre-set scenarios to play through but the game uses THE rules to the letter.
Im betting most of us have played the board game for the most part with our own house rules and have ignored such rules as needing to own all the property of one color before even starting to build houses, or the fact that when you land on a property and dont buy it youre supposed to auction it off. The game fallows these rules and most of your time will be spent waiting for an auction to end on a deed no one wants.
So there isnt much point in getting this, just play the actual board game.
P.S. When you play as the top hat rabbit feet pop out of the bottom and it hops around the board to move.

Super Godzilla 1/5 (???)

Avoid at all costs its not a tournament fighter or a King of the Monsters style game; You play it by moving a red dot representing Godzilla around a city map all the while taking heavy damage from tanks and missiles.
Once you get to the monster the style changes into a more traditional fighter side view. You fight by slowly walking up to your enemy and punch him in the nose, after that you hold back on the d-pad to make Godzilla run backwards which activates a slot machine with Tail whip, Head Butt, Breath attack, & Hyper Beam. What ever attack that's in the window at the time you press the A button is the attack Godzilla uses in an animation.

Frogger 3/5 (Arcade Port)

Its frogger. The last new game I got the only reason it isnt rated higher is because I found it kinda repetitive. If you love Frogger and can get it for around $5 go for it.

X-Men Mutant Apocalypse 2/5 (Side Scrolling Beat Em Up Fighter)

This one is very hard Ive never been able to get past the first round of levels with everyone at the same time. Which is to bad because the move sets and attacks of the X-men are pretty fun, like Beast hopping on guys heads.

Yoshis Cookie 3/5 (Puzzle)

This is a fun little puzzler, Never really played that many of them but it was a good diversion once I learned how to play after initial disappointment of it being nothing like Yoshis Island.

Tom Toonami Tunes

Did I mention that the scores are based on how much I enjoyed them. Also be sure to read the scores in Adam Sesslers voice.

Mario Paint ?/5 (Creative?)

I got the cartage for free but it didnt come with the mouse or pad. There are a few of them in town but I doubt it would be anything more than a watered down version of MS Paint.

Ultraman 2/5 (Fighter)

Its a trounament style game but it just one player and you can only play as ultraman.
You simple beat up monster and once there life has been depleted shot them with Burning Plasma to finish them off.
The game mechanic is that There is a gauge that builds up as you use various different skills and the level of that gauge determines your energy attack.
This game is hard, not only do you have just 3 min. to kill the monster but they can heal themselves if left alone and about half of them can teleport, fly, or jump vary far so youll be chasing them quite a bit. But what really makes this game frustrating it the fact that Ultraman controls very slow & sluggish and your move set is disappointingly small.
And I remember that in order to just get to the options screen you have to put in a complex button code before the title screen loads. It was one of my first games so the only love I have for it is probably just nostalgia. Cant really recommend it.

Star Trek: The Next Generation 2/5 (Zelda-ish adventure)

The design and layout of this game is a great way to do star trek with system limitations of a 16 bit machine. At the bridge you can assign re sources to various different systems, send reports to Starfleet (word recognizes that as a name), and set space courses. When you enter battle it changes to an asteroid like shooting game. And when you beam down planet side its a Zelda like adventure with some light puzzles. You pick 4 crewmen for your away team with several main of the characters and the rest just random redshirt.
Each crewmen has there own stats i.e. Worf has the strongest phaser and the most HP while Dr. Crusher has the least HP but can heal your team, and Data & LaForge have tricorders that are used in most of the puzzles. Problem is the execution is sloppy, the levels are stupidly designed, your never told how to do any given tast, and my copy is broke it never gave me any passwords and crashed at the end of one level and sometimes a key items doesnt always spawn when they should so you need to restart the game over again. Dont buy.

I have a pretty crappy SNES collection. Back then, my friend and I would buy different games then trade with each other when we were done with them. I sold some of my games in the past, but I mostly play emulator now-a-days though I still have my two SN... er Super Famicoms (yay, snapping the tabs).

- Fire Emblem IV: Geneology of the Holy War (J)

- Romancing of the Saga 3 (J)
- Super Mario All Stars
- TMNT: Tournament Fighters
- Tuff E Nuff
- Valis IV

Super Battleship 3/5 (strategy)

It has a classic mode that plays just like the board game but you have more ships and get 3 shots each turn.
But the main game is a turn based strategy games were you are given a set time to move your ships and fire on enemy targets. You initiate combat by moving your ship into range and targeting with your chosen munitions. The combat is like a FPS turret with ether main canons or torpedoes (you have rockets but all they seem to be good for it hitting land targets) as you fire on the enemy ship theyll be moving and firing back at you, but you have limited time so if one of you isnt dead the round will end with both of you damaged but un-sunk. During battle you wont just loose HP but also incur damage to the ships structure itself, bow guns, stern guns, engines, ruttier, sonar, & radar can all be knocked out; you can repair damage either by using that ships turn or have it dock in a friendly port.
The rulebook and mission descriptions lie, they may say you have to rescue a marooned seaman or make it to an island first as your mission objective but pretty much every mission is kill all enemies. And this is where the game becomes not so much fun to play. The subs are hell to kill, they can only be killed with depth charges which are tricky to use and the subs themselves move at the same speed as most of your ships so as soon as you reach one it has moved out of range and get this; you dont get to use any subs at all.
The game is Ok but other titles are far more worthy if your looking for something new.

Jurassic Park 2/5 (adventure)

You play as Sam Neil in a top down Zelda-like view. You can have 2 different guns from a selection of tazzer, shotgun, tranquilizer, gas grenade, exploding bolo, & some other gun. This game gets old quick, youre never given much direction on what to do, theres no map and the locations are rarely marked well if at all which often leads to getting locked in an area your not supposed to be in because you didnt get the key necessary for that place yet. When you do find the building you need to be in the game switches to a FPS were you dont need to aim up & down, just left & right. Pass on this.

Dino City 3/5 (platformer)

Surprisingly this isnt that bad of a game.
You play as Rex (with boy) who punches and tail whips or Tops (with girl) who is far more useful because he shoots darts. They kind of work like Yoshi in reverse, the dino is the main guy while the kid is your back up secondary unit which can be used for scouting, piggy backing up to high places, slipping into small areas, and has a remote that temporally freezes enemies. This feature also uses co-op play in that p1. plays the dino and p2. plays the kid. P2. doesnt get to do much but I guess its better than nothing.
The levels themselves are only alright for the most part, not terrible but also not ingenious or anything but they are challenging. Not something youd brag about but not something youd kick yourself for owning I guess. FYI There was a TV movie based on this that Disney channel often aired on Saturday afternoon or on odd hours on weekdays.

Spider-Man X-Men 2/5 (action arcade)

God this game is cruel. Its so hard I dont know if its really hard or just poorly made but I dont see how they expect anyone to play thought this in 1 sitting. You get zero time to experiment with what your character traits are and Im pretty sure the collision detection is off on the jumping. Dont Get.

Super Nova 3/5 (arcade side scrolling shooter)

This is a very fun and hard game. You have a choice between 3 different ships which have a diverse weapons tech tree. One ship might have bombs that fire in 4 different directions while the other only fires 2 but when they hit the ceiling or floor they skim the surface and hit any hostel targets along the way. 1 ship might have a hyperbeam as there highest tech upgrade while another has a huge energy wave and the 3rd would have a series of strong but small beams that fire in succession. To get these upgrades you will need to kill all the units in certain squadrons who when killed drop either a red orb (weapons) a blue orb (shields) or a green orb (extra life). With out the shields you will be killed if youre hit even once and seeing as how there are often over 10 different bullets as well as the ships that are shooting at you at any given time it gets tight pretty quick. The bosses are, as well as being able to fill half the screen are cruel but in a challenging way, it feels very gratifying when you finally kill one. Some of them have pretty stupid names thought (Thunderbolt Fans? Really?) A variation of the Konami Code will can be used to give you your full armaments right away but it only works once each and wont work again until you reset the game. This would be higher if I could have gotten further than 3 levels in when I was younger but seeing as how whenever I find it as well as the prequel/sequel Twin Darius is usually going for under $5 each, I say go for it. It will test your skills and patients.

Gradius III 3/5 (arcade side scrolling shooter)

With the same style of gameplay as Super Nova, Gradius III lets you customize your weapons upgrades instead of having 3 different ships with there own skill sets. The best one being the baby orange spheres that fallow you around and fire the same type of main gun & bomb as you do. The one big con to this is that you start out moving really slowly and you need to use your upgrade to increase your movement speed. So if you get shot down not only do you loose all your advanced weaponry but also you are now dead slow to boot. The bosses are just as awesome in this as Super Nova but look more realistic whereas Super Novas are more cartoony. Personally I like Super Nova better but if you enjoy this style of game its a must get. Sadly I rarely see this one second hand very often.

Indiana Jones Greatest Adventures 3/5 (side scrolling action adventure)

A solid game that takes you through all 3 Indy movies with combat using your fists until you can get your whip which can hit multiple enemies at once and because it travels in an arch will hit thing that are at an odd angle as well as let you swing across deadly chasms. Alternately the pistol has unlimited ammo and travels the entire screen, and there are also grenades that when activated kill every foe on the screen at a time. You can attack standing, running, jumping, and crouching as well as being able to do a roll to dodge or slip under small crevices. The big downside it the password system were your only given a password when you go to a new location; the first 2 levels it the temple in puru and them the bolder chase, after that you get a password for Nepal were youre trekking through the snow and then fight Arnold Taht in the burning tavern. Then a second password for Cairo which youll need to play through Cairo streets, horse cart chase, Cairo streets nighttime, excavation site, well of souls, escape well of souls, and finally escape Cairo. Only then will you get a password for Berlin in which you fight Rene Belloq as the souls of the damned burst out of the arch. Because of this I havent got passed the mine cart chase because the graphics are headache inducing and its nearly imposable to tell whats in front of you until its to late. I guess Ill just break down and use the code for the first part of Crusade even if it means skipping the fight with Mola Rom. As for the graphics and sound this along with the Super Star Wars titles has excellent sound design and uses synthed sound effects, clips, and music from the movies which has been done very well. (when you die Sean Connery saysIve lost him on the continue screen.) And as a cool little touch the passwords are in the greek alphabet.
If you like Indiana Jones and dont have any of the big SNES games you need to pick up try this one.

Super Star Wars 4/5 (arcade side scrolling action shooter)

The game play is simple enough; most of the levels have you going from the left side of the screen to the right killing everything that moves and once you reach the end of the level kill the boss. In addition there are also 3 vehicle stages: one were youre cruising around your landspeeder shooting Jawas & womprats while maintaining your fuel by destroying vaporators, a 3rd person view of your X-wing as you gun down Tie fighters and destroy gun towers on the surface of the Death Star, and finally a cockpit view of your starfighter as you make the bombing run down the trench.

There are 3 playable characters and you start off with Luke who uses a blaster until you get to Obi-Wans house where he gives you your fathers lightsaber. After that you can switch between sword & gun at any time. Once you reach the cantina you can play as Chewbacca who makes up for being a bigger target than Han or Luke by having a much larger health bar. When you leave for docking bay 94 Han is unlocked and the game lets you play through the remaining levels with any character you want.

The levels themselves cover almost all the movie as well as quite a bit of expanded universe stuff to help fill out the game. Youll be going through The Dune Sea, race to the sandcrawler, outside the sandcrawler, inside the sandcrawler, land of the sand people, land of the banthas, travel to Mos Eisley, Mos Eisley spaceport, cantina brawl, docking bay 94, Death Star hanger bay, detention block, tractor beam abyss, Death Star attack, & finally the trench run. (for some reason the trash compactor and Falcon gun turrets are not in this game.)

The enemies you face are many and varied, everything in this game wants to kill you and often times theres an infinite amount of them. Youll be fighting Stormtroopers, Sandtroopers, jawas, womprats, mynocks, that frog thing outside of Jabbas palace that burped, Greedo, Ponda Baba, Labria, Garindan, Elors Madok, Sandpeople, banthas, a more worm like stage of the sarlacc, the hologram monster R2 used on chewy, Dr. Ball, and even the mouse droids are surprisingly deadly.
In addition to these there are also original as well as stock foes that were added as well like giant scorpions, regular sized scorpions that shoot bullets from there tails, sand snakes, sand worms, robots, gun turrets, a giant mutant womprat, and several gunships, mechs, & assault hover craft.

To face these overwhelming odds you will be armed with 1 of 5 different weapons:

Laser blaster The standard firearm shoots bolts of what ever the hell its saposta be made out of that can Ricochet off certain surfaces.

Flame Shoots fireballs and is much stronger than the blaster.

Proton Seeker While only the 3rd level weapon this is by far the best seeing as how its bullets track and fallow any and every enemy on screen. All you need to do is it hold down the Y button and concentrate on dodging.

Ion Gun as far as I can tell this works by doubling the damage of every consecutive hit, 1st does 1 point of damage 2nd does 2 points, 3 does 4 points, 4th does 8 points etc. This also bounces off walls.

Plasma Flame the strongest gun in the game it will kill most enemies in 1 or 2 hits.

And then theres Lukes lightsaber which will hit both in front as well as behind plus when you super jump with the saber youll do a screw attack. But seeing as how Luke is a novice he cant block with it.

This game is hard even when you max out your continues, number of starting lives and put it on easy. There are also no passwords so the level select feature of the debug code is a must if you just want to play a certain level.

The controls are good, the sound design is great for a 16 bit game (synthed john Williams scores as well as movie sound EFX and voice clips) the animations are fluid for the most part and the rest of the graphics are very colorful and vibrant. Ive seen it go for about $8 or under and at the price its a must get.

You should clarify as to which game you're talking about.
There are 3 SSW games; A New Hope' & 'The Empire Strikes Back', & 'Return of the Jedi'.

I, personally, felt the 'TESB' had better vehicle levels; talking down those mammoths were pretty epic.

If you dig on this game, try 'Star Wars Trilogy: Apprentice of the Force for the GBA.
It's like a combo of the original 'Prince of Persia' games & 'Star Wars'.

This review was for the game basied on the movie "IV: A New Hope" which at the time was still mostly referred to as being just "Star Wars". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Star_Wars

Ahh, I see.

I separate them myself.

You really should get the 3rd game, it's overall, the best of the SSW series.

Although, that whole 'going into the Death Star 2 & then leaving' is a bitch.
I STILL have issues with that freaking level.

Super The Empire Strikes Back 5/5 (run n gun platformer)

Lukes controls have been greatly improved, he can still switch between gun & saber but now when you press Y with the saber equipped he will do an uppercut, Y+up for a down strike, & most importantly Y+down for a block which will either absorb or better yet deflect enemy fire back at them. At the beginning of the game his force powers will help him sporadically by allowing him to jump super high into secret areas that contain health and gun pickups but once you reach Dagobah hell start to find these strange orbs that will at first give him the force powers that there symbols represent and later replenish his force power gauge.
The powers you get are:
-Heal: The most useful and practical power in the game.
-Levitation: This will save your life in the scant few levels you can use it in.
-Freeze: This freezes all enemies on screen for a short time.
-Invisible: when this is activated most foes cant see you.
-Mind Control: The Jedi mind trick causes enemies to stand down and not attack.
-Deflect: the least useful seeing as how you can do this with your lightsaber youre self.
-Saber Boomerang: Youll throw your lightsaber out like a boomerang and use the D-pad to control it, uses far too much power but its fun as hell.
-Bullet Time: it the Matrix force power.

Chewbacca has a new spin attack ability used for close quarters fighting that will hit anything to the front and back of him. I has an energy gauge that if depleted will start to cut into your health so youll need to use it sparingly.

Han Solo can now throw grenades that act the same way as the grenades the various enemies toss at you; on impact they explode sending shrapnel in a small radius that hurts any enemies that get hit by it. These are very useful during boss fights and I tend to save at least 15 of them for that reason.

The vehicle levels have been improved upon from the 3 in Star Wars, the main one of these being The Battle of Hoth. Piloting your snowspeeder is still pretty fun today but back then it was epic, you even could use the shoulder L & R buttons to fire the tow cables and bring down the monstrous AT-ATs with them, going in Id figured you just shoot them and thats it but no, you could actually tie up there legs. Lukes X-Wing controls much better then it did in Star Wars and they even gave you the proton torpedoes as well.
The asteroid chase is great fun, just a simple cockpit shooter where you dodge and shoot asteroids all the while youre gunning for the tie fighters. Seeing as how often you need to go looking for the ties and in doing so get banged up bad it is kind of frustrating though. Then there are 2 side scrolling shooter levels the first on a speeder bike being far too easy and the second with you in a snowspeeder being almost imposable what with the speeder taking up half the screen.

One of the best new features is the new password system which not only gives you a break in not making you have to play though he game in one sitting but also allows you to revisit favorite levels at your leisure. There are 3 different passwords for each level; 1 each for Easy, Brave, & Jedi respectively but the only way to get the password is from the continue screen so if you blow through 4 levels youll only get the password for the last level you were on. (Ive willingly killed myself several times just to get the password from a level so I wouldnt have to replay the one before it again.)

The jump mechanic has taken a step sideways and is now more intuitive with pressing the B button once for a hop and again for a double jump which is far easier to pull off when you need it then in Star Wars with B for a long but low jump and Up+B for a high but short jump. Now I dont know if this is just for the Hoth levels but the jumping & landing seems slippery and kind of sluggish with several jumps being very hard to get right.

The difficulty has vastly increased from Super Star Wars and it will break you and make you cry uncle. On the first Cloud City level there is a hallway with a heavy gun turret at pops up and fires a volley at you for 5 sec. and then retracts for about 4sec. If this was your only obstacle no problem but the small prode droids fly over head and shoot downward towards you; they die easy enough but they keep coming and by the time you kill the next one the gun turret has already started to fire on you again and you get knocked back if you touch the droids so you cant just make a brake for it because youll get shot up very fast and them once you finally do get past this part guess what, there are 2 more gun turrets with this exact same set up and if you couldnt get past if the first time with a fully upgraded gun and 30+ grenades and a maxed out life bar youll probably do even worst the next 8 times with only a basic gun and minimal life.
There are tons of instances like the one above especially the 2nd wampa cave which is just brutal with everything being able to hurt you and little to no easily acquirable health pickups.

As for the bosses even if you do know the patterns and weaknesses for them theres still no guarantee youll come out victorious. Boba Fett is THE hardest boss Ive ever fought; you have to face him as Chewbacca so your at a size disadvantage because your battle takes place in a smallish hallway were most of the sideways shots you cant jump over or crouch to avoid, you need to slide underneath them but youll usually end up sliding right into Fett. And he jetpacks around very fast and randomly while shooting his automatic ion gun at you which he fires straight downward, keep in mind that the ion gun ricochets off of walls & ceilings so just one shot will hit you about 3 times which is enough to cut your health almost in half. Then theres his flame thrower which has been replaced by a carbinite projector that will freeze you for about 6 sec. which is enough time for him to kill you with a volley of rockets that not only explode but also have a quite a knock back to them.
The only time Ive ever beaten him without cheating was when I waited for the 4-LOMs to pop out from the doors in the walls and kill 2 which dropped a thermal detonator that after grabbing I quickly ran into the fight and used it to instantly eliminate over half of Fetts life. After that I still needed to fight the Slave 1.

The duel with Darth Vader is one of the most frustratingly enjoyable game finales Ive played. You face him three times; the first 2 hes just toying with you with the 2nd time ending with him throwing you out the window and down into the last platforming parts of the final level which are brutal but with the levitation force power its doable.
Once you finally face off with him there are no pits to fall down or corners that you can go run and hide in, or collapsing walkways; its just him and you, uppercut, block, jump, down strike, spin attack, slide, & save your force power to heal yourself. With the exception of how hell continue to throw debris at you and attack at the same time once his life is in the red nether of you get any real cheap shots on one another so unlike most boss battles this fight is just about pure skill.
