I hinted that I would be uploading this some time ago. I actually own the thing but as I don't have a properly working scanner I'm uploading Nipponsei's version so you guys can stare at nifty scans.
Every instrument is live. You don't get that very often with anime. Akira Senju, who is infamously selective about what anime he composes for (he has composed anime since the early 90s and you can count the amount of series he's done on two hands), arrives with one of his trademark emotional and sympathetic soundscapes, and the soundtrack progresses from a lonely and sad work to something extremely violent and threatening to more serene and peaceful and finally triumph. All along the way the emotion that rules this OST does not abate, even in the signature battle track the violins sound like they are crying and wailing.
At the end of the OST we have five tracks sung by KOKIA, who is perhaps one of five Japanese vocalists whose voice is so powerful that you don't care that you don't know what she is saying. This OST marked a change in style for KOKIA, and started her shift towards the more eerie and sad work she generally does today. Akira Senju still composed and arranged the instrumentals, though.
Red Gardenwas released towards the end of GONZO's "golden age" that started with Full Metal Panic in 2002 and concluded with RomeoXJuliet in 2007, where GONZO typically released above-average and experimental products that, even if controversial (such as the very loose adaptations of Chrono Crusade and Black Cat), gained dedicated audiences on both sides of the Pacific. Red Garden was another series released in this tradition, as it takes place in New York with Americans as the main characters who are generally portrayed sympathetically, a rarity in Japan. It was also animated in a different manner than most anime, where the show was not animated until the voice work and sound mix were completed.
