When home console starts supporting 4X games and gaming mods I'll never upgrade my PC again.
How amazingly fantastic, I recently made a slideshow about pro's and con's of PS3 and 360. I tried to be as unbiased as possible, but. . . Something positively hilarious happened on September the 22, (the halo day thing). The lowest grade 360 demo system in the glass case red-ringed. Epic. I threw in a FAIL slide at the end. Unbiasedly saying though, I believe is you are wanting primary gaming focus, 360 is a very gaming based system, whereas the PS3 is very multi-functional.

My launch 360 still has yet to do that. Which is not to say I have the "good" console, but that it's probably saving up for a full-on explosion the next time I lean in. Whereas my friend has had at least two 360s and a PS3 go bad on him. All optical drive problems. His Wii stays working though...

Our 360 is from 2006, I think, and we've never had a single problem with it either. I never had a problem with any of the PS2s I owned either, apart from mine getting stolen. :cryingbatman:
All 3 children in my mother-in-law's house got a PS2 for Christmas one year, plus one for the living room, and all but one of them were dead before the next Christmas. I assume they have to be doing something to their PS2s for them all to die like that, but I have no idea what it could be.
The only Wii problems I've heard of are controller mishaps.
My Wii had the green pixels of death. That's what happens when you leave WiiConnect24 on 24 hours and the fan doesn't know to stay on. Oh Nintendo~
They did fix it for free though.

Awesome work, Neg! Should have told them why is it called WiiConnect24 if it can't handle a 24 hour play session?
Well not even a 24 hour play session. Just leaving the internet connection on all the time, which is what WiiConnect24 is designed for. I read somewhere that the fans don't (or didn't, it's probably fixed by now) know to stay on all the time.
Still, why should having the net connection on 24/7 make it be hot enough to fry the graphics card?
I dunno the specifics, but w/e, I just have it off now. I haven't checked for updates in months. I should probably do that before I get Shattered Memories...
Neg, the same thing happened to my Wii last year. I didn't know what caused it at the time, but that seems to fit the description. Thanks for the info.

My simple point about PC is, if you have a decent enough machine, you really don't need a Xbox360. Actually, a PC combined with Steam and Xlive, kills Xbox360's online offering. Mainly because it's free and you can play with 360 owners.
np, Prak.
I checked and I did indeed have an update waiting.

That's true if all the games you're interested in playing are also available on the PC, but if you want to play console exclusive stuff, it makes much more sense to buy the console and play games there. If you like to buy used games, a console would also be preferable, though I suppose you can pirate most PC stuff.
There are game that appeal to me like Bioshock and Arkham Asylum that I'd be able to play on a PC, but my main interest game wise is strategy rpgs and weird sim games, which tend to be console exclusive. Of course, the 360 doesn't have too many games like this either.

Just turn off the auto-updates and you'd be fine.
I've been playing various games online with no issues.
Bricking is fairly rare now, unless you're a total idiot.

Nintendo is pretty amazing about this stuff. The only time I've ever had a Nintendo console break down was my GameCube, and they replaced (not fixed) it for free even though the warranty had been up for almost two years. I was pretty blown away!
Just goes to show you there are reasons beyond Mario and Zelda that people are loyal Nintendo fans. :zillawalk:
I have an Xbox 360 that's never red ringed on me, but I also barely use it. Our N64 was the most-used console that there ever was in my house, and it still works without a hitch to this day! I can't believe we didn't break that thing after the countless hours of Super Smash Bros. and Perfect Dark.

I think the only difference is preference. Probably you prefer or are used to Japanese-made games. While PC specializes in strategy games, they're often RTS instead of TBS and Japan doesn't really make RTS, I guess. Korea on the other had, contributes a number of RTS games more in line with what you'd expect from the East in terms of art and play style.
And when I think sim, I can't help but think of Will Wright and the legacy of incredible sim games attached to the name like Sim City, of course.

I am surprised my NES still works after 24 years of service.
since i was born the nes was given to me (belonged to my parents before) so i treated it like mad. whenever a game didnt work (the game, not the system) i would still punch and kick the system.
and even today, i still play with that same nes from 22 years ago, with the same controllers i bashed countless times to my walls.

Why would you want to do that? You can't add a hard disk or a modem on a slim :/
The only game I ever played that needed the HDD is XI.
I enjoyed it enough, but ultimately it was a bad decision.

Modem is useless and so is the HDD.
Slim is a LOT quieter and, besides, that poor old fat was starting to have issue running speed heavy games like 'Wipeout'.

I absolutely do have a preference for Japanese-made games, and while I enjoy some RTS games, I don't play them much anymore.
I do play a fair amount of Japanese games on my PC, but they're either translated versions of older games, or they're visual novels, which my crappy PC can handle just fine.
I'm surprised to hear about all the Wii problems, but I think I probably heard about what happened to Neg's before. My memory is not what it used to be.

The slim has a built-in modem already. So it's ready for online play right from the start. As for the HD, I never used it and apparently from reading some articles about it, hardly any PS2 game used it either. Or it was useless. I can't remember. I don't even know if you could save your files on it or not. But basically, it wasn't like you were missing out on something huge.

Some games supported installs to hdd to make loading go faster. Just like 360 does right now. And some games supported a very prototypical form of DLC. But the only good reason to keep a fat PS2 imo was to copy games. If you had HDLoader software, you could store almost any game on the hard drive without needing the original disc to play.

If you still haven't decided on which system to pick (I don't feel like going through each post on this thread to identify your standpoint), I'll give you my two cents:
Fan noise:
I've had my PS3 since launch and one of my closest friends had an X360 for a year or two. Whenever I used to go to his house (we don't live near each other anymore, which isn't the point) to play Gears or Halo, the system started getting as loud as a vacuum cleaner after around an hour or so. If you play regularly, this can be extremely irritating as it drowns out the sounds from the game, especially at night. In comparison, the PS3 still makes its share of noise, but it's not as notable after it's been left on for a few hours. The fan levels are also quieter.
Games:
Everyone knows that the X360 has a larger library of games, and perhaps a more stronger online experience. Personally, I'm not one to pay $50 annually just to play online, aside from all the XBL servers using P2P, being noticeably slower than Dedicated, which is what PSN uses for the majority of it's games. Both systems have their AAA exclusives and flops, with X360 games ranging more towards shooters than anything.
Accessibility:
Xbox 360:
- Achievements
- Up to four active controllers
- In-game music reproduction
- Cross-game voice chat / invites
PS3:
- Trophies
- Up to seven active controllers
- PS Home
- Free network service
- Dedicated servers (exclusive titles)
- Blu-ray player
- Upgradable HDD
You can also upgrade the HDD for the 360. One of my friends has one that's 1 terrabyte. Of course, he knew what he was doing. Because I don't think you're supposed to do it.

Not really something to bitch about. But it's still more than you have to pay for PS3..
It is because the PS3 online thing is free. But it's still pretty silly I think.
Now something to bitch about it setting up to pay $7.99 a month on a credit card except they bump up the price to $9.99 after the first month. Now I bitched about that.

Bumping this since there's been so much discussion of systems that have died on us.
My Nintendo DS died. :( It can no longer get a charge light, and the battery is now totally dead. From my internet searches, it seems like this isn't totally uncommon. Apparently a fuse can blow in the DS, and if you're good at sautering, you can fix it. I am not, so it looks like I'm out of luck. I'm going to test it on a friend's charger to be sure, but I am pretty sure that's not the problem.
Since Nintendo wants $75 to fix my DS and since a used DS lite is something like $89.99, I'm just going to get a new (used) one as soon as I can. Here's hoping I get lucky and they have a pink one.
I can't believe I'm apparently one of the only people on the internet whose 360 has never had a single problem but my beloved DS had to go and die on me.

It's pretty funny that no matter how much we've advanced with gaming systems over the years, they become more powerful and graphic pleasing, but we sacrifice reliability for it. The SNES may not be the best graphic system to exist, but it was reliable as heck and still runs (at least mine) this very day with no problems.
ROKUSHO
10-29-2009, 08:02 PM
my 2600 still runs, does that make it reliable?
no, it just means i take care of it.
reliability is when you treat it like shit and still works.
as i previously said, nintendo products are the best in that.
I can't think of any system that I've had problems with that weren't my fault (like replacing my PSP a few times because of dropping it, stepping on it and selling one to a friend because the internet switch didn't work anymore. Yes, he knew and that's why he paid me $30 for it). But all my systems have been working properly, except when I had to send in my 360 one time because my roommate was the last one to play it and SOMETHING happened.
