If nobody can get closer to what you wanted in 24 hours, then it's awarded to Enkidoh. And no further questions based on opinion please. I don't see how "two main reasons Ozma can beat an unprepared party" can be anything other than subjective.

aces4839
07-13-2010, 05:30 PM
one of the main reasons was ozma's meteor. it can easily kill an entire party. the other was curse, that does heavy damage and inflict many status ailments.

FF1WithAllThieves
07-13-2010, 10:49 PM
Other part might be Doomsday. You can easily turn it to your advantage by wearing pumice pieces and other armor that absorbs the shadow element, but if you're unprepared it can be devastating. Of course, the most accurate answer to this question is because Ozma is a difficult boss and would therefore be expected to make mincemeat out of an unprepared party. Give it to Enkidoh if my part is right, since, like Agent said, the answer to this one is really subjective.

in Ipsen's Castle, what is the best weapon for Zidane to attack an enemy and why?

Enkidoh
07-19-2010, 02:03 AM
The Dagger, his starting weapon (of which one is found in the castle in case you sold it or synthed the original). This is because Ipsen's Castle reverses the damage you deal to enemies. In other words, strong weapons become very weak and vice versa. So using your starting weapons is the only way to progress.

Luckily though it's only like that to a certain point where things return to normal.

How is the damage of the Tonberry ability Everyone's Grudge calculated?

aces4839
07-22-2010, 05:08 PM
everyone's grudge is a final fantasy vii ability by tonberries and master tonberries. nuthin to do with final fantasy ix.

Agent0042
07-22-2010, 09:00 PM
Wrong, Tonberries appear in Final Fantasy IX as well.

Enkidoh
07-23-2010, 01:21 AM
Although I can't remember exactly how the FFIX version works, usually in most FF games, 'Everyone's Grudge' deals damage in relation to how many enemies that character has defeated, so the more kills, the more damage it does. So I'm going to go with that. :)

And Aces, as Agent said the tonberry appears in numerous FF games too, including FFIX, as shown here: http://www.ffcompendium.com/h/espmon/tonberry.shtml

Incidentally, they also appear in FFXIII as well, but do not appear on that page because FF Compendium hasn't been updated since last year.

impudent urinal
07-23-2010, 03:55 AM
Close enough Enkidoh. Damage is calculated by raising 4 to the power of how many tonberries the player has killed.

Impudent Urinal got it right - it's Parom's Action Figure Store - naturally taking it's name from Palom (as is well known, when writing in Romanji the Japanese don't distinguish between 'r' and 'l' sounds), one of the mage twins in FFIV.

Anyway, IU got it right so next question is his. :)

I think the reference he's after is that I recall the name of the magical tome Minister Artania uses to find the cure for Cid's transformation is called the Book of Matoya - Matoya naturally being the blind witch in FFI who sends the Light Warriors on that wild-chocobo chase to find the crystal ball she uses to see.

no, Amarant learns that ability too, despite his personality.

Enkidoh
07-30-2010, 07:41 AM
FF1WAT got it right. I was indeed looking for Protect Girls (although you didn't mention what it actually does, it's pretty much self explanatory anyway ;)), which is appropriate given his 'lady's man' personality. ;)

Also, I just checked the FFIX strategy guide (even if it is the crappy Brady one), to look at Amarant's ability list and Protect Girls is not listed anywhere there. So I'm going to say it is indeed a unique ability for Zidane alone.

Anyway FF1, your go. :)

aces4839
07-31-2010, 03:07 AM
i want to mention that theres more than one unique ability for zidane. bandit and master thief are also unique abilities as zidane is the only character who can steal items from enemies.

FF1WithAllThieves
08-01-2010, 03:57 AM
Yeah, at first I thought your answer was right, but then I remembered the clue about Zidane's personality, and Protect Girls is the best one in the list for that. Anyway:

Anybody who's leveled up against Yans ought to know this one. With items available in the game, tell me a way to equip four characters such that Vivi can cast Doomsday and heal three of your characters and do no damage to one. If you list a way for the fourth to absorb the damage, I will feel sheepish, but you will still be correct.

aces4839

two pumice pieces and two demon's armor absorb damage, i think egotist's armlet nulls the damage.

FF1WithAllThieves

08-15-2010, 02:41 AM
I just want to point out Aces that you missed one boss in Memoria - Deathguise, fought just before entering the Crystal of Life to fight Trance Kuja. But anyway... ;)

I may as well ask a question given Aces opened it up to anyone:

With the exception of Trance Kuja, all the other bosses in Memoria/Crystal World reference past FF games in either name, design or general appearence. Not including the Elemental Fiends from FFI (Tiamat, Lich, Kraken and Kary/Maralith), which Aces already mentioned, what FF games do the remaining Memoria/Crystal World bosses reference?

Szczepan
08-16-2010, 01:52 AM
Deathguise - cowardly monster that attacked airship on world map in FFVI.
Hades - he had a shop in FFII but was hidden behind waterfall in one of the last dungeons
Necron - ? He's Necron. He comes out of nowhere to destroy stuff:)

Enkidoh
08-16-2010, 05:59 AM
Agent and Szczepan both got separate halves of the question right:

Deathguise is actually a mistranslation of Deathgaze, the monster that indeed attacks you at random while flying around in the Falcon airship in the World of Ruin in FFVI. It also appears as the Mark 'Visitor on Deck' - with Deathgaze randomly appearing while travelling, fittingly, on a passenger airship, in FFXII.
Necron apparently references both Neo X-death (as Agent mentioned - they share certain attacks) and Necrophobe (similar name and general appearance) in FFV.
Hades naturally appeared as a summon monster in FFVII (the materia was found in the Sunken Gelnika aeroplane in disc 2). However, I never knew about that FFII appearance so extra points to Szczepan for that bit of info! :D

Anyway, because you both got it right, I'll award the next question to either Agent or Szczepan, whoever wants to post first. :D

I like this question. I know cactuar was a summon in FF8 and in the Advance port of FF6. I'll have to think more.

Edit: Goblins were also a summon in FF4 as was Bomb.
Catoblepas is a summon in FF5.
Cerberus and Tonberry were also summons in FF8.

Enkidoh
09-26-2010, 05:42 AM
You've got most of them right (and even mentioned one I forgot about, on account of it being renamed as 'Shoat' in FFV - aka, Catoblepas, which was also a boss in FFVIII, so good call on that one :D). So that makes seven monsters not six.

There is still one more I'm looking for (hint: it's a monster that's a summon from FFXI, so a lot of people wouldn't know of it, that also looks like a (differently named) GF from FFVIII).

Malboro and Tonberry are two that I know of, but I can't be bothered looking through my FFCC strategy guide to find the rest. :p

EDIT: I seem to recall a Stroper is also found in FFCC as well.

Malboro is one.
Tonberry wasn't a boss.
I don't recall a stroper, bit it wasn't a boss even if there was.
So we're still lookin for 4 more.

Enkidoh
09-29-2010, 08:16 AM
That's right, I remember now - Armstrong, Dracozombie and Iron Giant are all bosses in FFCC.

I do remember there is a Lamia as one half of a boss too, but I don't think that particular one was actually named as such. So for the final one, I have no idea.

impudent urinal
09-29-2010, 09:33 AM
Good Enough. I'll give you the lamia which was the wife of the boss of Moschet Manor. Didn't even consider it.
The other one I was looking for was Antlion which makes less sense than Lamia since it starts as a boss in FF9 and is encountered again if you attempt to enter Desert Palace the wrong way.

Your Go Enk.

Enkidoh
09-29-2010, 04:37 PM
Ah, I did actually remember the Antlion too, but that's also a boss in FFIX (not to mention FFIV where it originated), and not a regular enemy so I thought it might have been a trick question. ;)

As for Stroper, you're right, they're not in FFCC - I was actually thinking of FFXI instead where they also appear (strangely they're just regular Malboro type enemies renamed in that game) which is the cause of my confusion. :p

Anyway, now for my question:

According to the statue in Lindblum's Industrial District, which Cid was the inventor of the Mist engine?

Well, the FF Wiki only mentions he came from Lindblum which is already known, so I have no idea what his original hometown is. So I'm going to take another wild guess and say Dali? If not, then I'm going to assume it's a trick question and just stick with Lindblum.

As for Baby Boink's question, the music track in question is called 'Eternal Harvest' on the FFIX OST. :)

Name as many music pieces as you can on the soundtrack that feature a variation on "Melodies of Life." One point for each one. For two bonus points, tell me the name of the artist who performed both the English and Japanese versions of "Melodies of Life." For three bonus points, tell me the name of the fourth track on the "Melodies of Life" single release, the one that isn't a version of "Melodies of Life." For five bonus points each, name either of two games other than Final Fantasy IX in which a variation of "Melodies of Life" were featured.

Hehe, I think I can pretty much nail this question (Melodies of Life is one of my favourite songs ;)):

Name as many music pieces as you can on the soundtrack that feature a variation on "Melodies of Life." One point for each one.

Besides Melodies of Life and Final Fantasy (which is used as the theme for the end credits), there is also Memories Erased by a Storm (opening FMV theme), At South Gate Border (South Gate township theme), Behind the Door (FMV theme in the ending when Garnet rushes down to reunite with Zidane), Crossing Those Hills (world map theme in discs 1, 2 and 3), Eiko's Theme (has the underlying melody), Garnet's Theme (appears a number of times, usually involving Garnet in someway), Memories of That Day (slow, sombre variation used in cutscenes), Song of Memory (humming version used a number of places where Garnet and Eiko sing the song as part of the storyline), Stolen Eyes (slow variation used in a number of cutscenes), The Chosen Summoner (dark, spooky variation used when Alexander is beckoning to Garnet) and Two Hearts Not Captured (occurs during the play in the ending).

There's probably more included on the FFIX OST Plus album, but I don't have that CD, only the normal OST. Also the OST CD album includes a number of variations that didn't appear in the actual game itself: two versions used in the infamous Japanese FFIX Coca-cola TV ads, and an a Capella vocal version.

Also it's worth noting that The Place I'll Return to Someday and it's many variations sounds a little like Melodies of Life, but is actually a separate theme, so I didn't include it here.

For two bonus points, tell me the name of the artist who performed both the English and Japanese versions of "Melodies of Life."

Emiko Shiratori performed it in both Japanese and English in the original game and numerous live concerts, as Baby Boink correctly stated earlier, but the version performed recently in the Distant Worlds concert series was sung by Susan Calloway in English only.

For three bonus points, tell me the name of the fourth track on the "Melodies of Life" single release, the one that isn't a version of "Melodies of Life."

As I actually own the CD single that's easy. The track is called Galway, a nice Gaelic-themed track. :)

For five bonus points each, name either of two games other than Final Fantasy IX in which a variation of "Melodies of Life" were featured.

Well, I do know an arrangement of the non-vocal Crossing Those Hills variation appears in Dissidia Final Fantasy, as the backing track for Zidane's 'Destiny Glory IX' stage map, remixed by Takeharu Ishimoto and Tsuyoshi Sekito (it also appears in Dissidia's end credits, appropriately during images of Zidane dueling Kuja), and I think it also appears in Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon as well, but as I've never played the later game I'm unsure.

Phew! :)

I loved that question by the way Agent. It really got me thinking. :D

Therefore, in keeping with the spirit of Agent's question, this one also has extra credit.

Firstly, for a point each, name all, or as much of, the in-game variations of the opening demo theme The Place I'll Return to Someday as possible. This includes FMV themes as well as normal background themes.

As well, an extra point each is awarded to each arranged version mentioned as well, including the name of the CD it appears on.

Plus, for an extra fifty points, name the special unreleased version that only appears on a certain CD version of FFIX's OST, including the track's title, the album's name and publisher of the CD.

Go to it! ;)

03-11-2011, 06:34 AM
I'm sorry for the late reply Agent - I was just waiting to see if anyone else wanted to have a go, but yeah, Impudent Urinal basically got it right, although there was at least one more version used in the OST (which is also my favourite variation) - A Transient Past, the spooky chanting version that plays in the room in Oeilvert with the metal faces that reveal Terra's past.

As for the arranged versions, the ones I know of are the orchestral arrangement that is part of a medley with Melodies of Life in the More Friends and Distant Worlds concert albums, and the Piano Collections version for solo piano.

Finally, the answer to the bonus question is FU-RU-SA-TO (translated as Distant Homeland), which appears as a bonus track on the US released FFIX - Music From the Final Fantasy IX Video Game ~ Uematsu's Best Selection single disc OST album released by Tokyopop in 2000. It's similar to the the OST version, but not exactly, meaning this version is probably an early version Uematsu composed but altered for the actual game. Still a good track though. :)

Anyway, it's your go IU.

Not without resorting to using a guidebook anyway, which I just did.

Looking at the FFIX guide's bestiary (you know, the crappy Brady Games one), there were only 3 enemies listed as appearing in the Festival of the Hunt though - Fang, Mu and Zaghnol, although I know that is actually wrong - IU is right in that there are indeed 4 enemies that appear, as I also remember distinctly Trick Sparrows appearing as well.

So, looking at the Bestiary, the only re-occurring number in their stats besides level and the big zero next to EXP/Gil which Aces already mentioned is their MP is all the same, except for the Zaghnol. So, I admit I have no idea what stat it is these enemies all share (the bestiary in the guide book doesn't list stats like strength etc).
