I love Green Day. I thought I didn't for a while, but I realized I was trying to please someone else. Shame on me. End of Story.

Does anyone actually take Green Day seriously? What a rotten shithole band that is. Fans of them are just like fans of Britney Spears or Blink 182. Buncha faggot pop shit

Yeah, I never seen what the great attraction about Green Day was. I also lose respect for bands when they suddenly start wearing make-up because presumably their label told them to do it if they desired to sell more albums.

When were Green Day ever not in the shitter?
I've never liked them. They are like an emo/shit version of RATM. (who are amazing live by the way).
You guys clearly weren't teenagers in 94 or predisposed to being a slacker/misanthrope :D

I was, I listened to Pantera, Alice In Chains, Deicide & a shit load of music before that. The 90's was a horrible decade and Green Day were the leaders of that shit.
90s had some great music. Kyriel just reminded me of Smash Mouth in chat. And, Lit. I used to call them both Lounge Punk.
I wanted life to be one big tiki BBQ pool party *sigh*

As far as New artists it didn't have much. Kenny Wayne Shepperd, Mazzy Star, Pantera, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains & STP, is about all I can think of.
And besides Dimebag Darrel, Jerry Cantrell, and Kim Thayil there wasn't much for guitar players.

Green Day was the first band I liked.
My musical interest has grow dramatically since then.
Despite knowing that Green Day's music really isn't that spectacular, I do think they are good at what they do; which is be a punk band.
Though, I haven't heard the newest single, unfortunately; if only in part to my English class, I am sick of hearing about politics. Everyone loves Obama to everyone hates Obama the socialist with his fascist policies, but thats another rant.

Having grown up in the 80s I can tell you GreenDay are as far away from punk as the sun is to the earth... yeah.
I blame myspace and things as such for the downfall of the music industry, some people are really not meant to be heard, theirs shit bands from right to left up and down and inbetween these days/old man rant over :P

Every generation thinks the stuff made present day is not as quality as their generation's music, whilst forgetting that there was plenty of hype and love from the masses for horrible horrible music in their days as well. Ignoring this, what you said about "myspace and such" is possibly the dumbest fucking thing I have ever heard.
Instead of allowing new groups a chance to get their music heard without dealing with all the special connections, corporation bullshit and ass-kissery, it seems like you're advocating we just shove innovation and exploration of new music for the tired and true methods that allowed record companies who treated their artists like shit to retake control of the industry. The music industry is not dying. It's growing up. The people currently in charge did not adapt quickly enough or take the development of the internet seriously enough to create a standard, and that's why public sector and start up companies are enjoying more popularity in broadcasting music through things such as social networks (Myspace) than the record companies who actually sell physical music and have had long standing connections with radio stations and other traditional media sources.
This isn't in defence of Myspace but I couldn't let this one slip by. Don't blame the symptoms, blame the disease. The way music is bought/sold and broadcast has all completely changed. The industry needs to change with it or it will die.
End of.

the issue with some bands is that after they make a great album, often they feel like they have to change things up to keep fans interested...when they really don't. I'm not saying that it never works, but i could keep listening to albums like dookie all my life. So if american idiot worked, i can understand them trying to duplicate that success.
Oh and they wear makeup to hide their wrinkles...its what all old ppl bands do
and what? u guys hate myspace? but without it we would have never discovered SOULJABOYTELLEM!!

Blasphemy! Every decade has its winners and losers. I hope you are not one of those clowns that say rock died in the 60's. People like that make me sick & lumping 10 years of pop music into is severely ignorant.
As for Green Day being horrible musicians... Isnt that the charm OF punk music?

Im not so sure that this is a bad thing.... the good thing about myspace music & other net based labels w/o main stream distribution is now you have a choice on what/who to listen to instead of letting a multi-million company tell you who you should be listening to. Shit or no, at least you have a choice.

Neg, no one thinks any less of you for having bad taste in music. At least not me.
Mostly because I own American Idiot and Dookie, and what I've heard on the radio sounds pretty catchy.
I try not to judge these things too harshly so I don't end up contradicting myself later.
Clarkson is still just no, however.

Well, decent hardcore- and pop-punk bands surely do impress me, musically! Okay I CAN understand a certain simplicity within punk music is unattractive, or unappealing enough to take it seriously, but still..
I'd just recommend starting off with bands like Descendents and then check out the rest of the eighties! ('cause in the end my favourite style's the early 80's hardcore punk, with fantastic talented bands like Bad Brains, Minutemen, Adolescents and Circle Jerks. Great lyrics, great music, brilliant!)

I would have thought that the determining factor when deciding how highly you rate music ought to be based on enjoyment rather than technical proficiency, no? I'd much sooner listen to the Clash than Lamb of God, for instance.

Well yea everyone has there own taste and forte', I enjoy more technical music, I enjoy some simple music as well, I just don't dig on punk or power-chord strumming rock. The Clash is absolutely horrible and a big reason why there was so much crap in the 80's haha.

Hmm...That's an interesting point, but I'm not sure I agree. Enjoyment decides whether you like a band or not, but it doesn't necessarily have to do with how highly you rate the band. We all like some shitty music that we know is shitty. In my opinion, you can't talk about 90s bands without bringing up Radiohead. Even if you find their music miserable, morbid, agonizing, and suicide-inducing, as some people feel, their cross-pollination of genres, non-narrative lyrical techniques that have roots in Imagist poetry, popularity, and technical proficiency make them important to the history of popular music. I don't enjoy everything they do, but I'd rate them higher than some other music I'd rather listen to. Does that make sense?

I don't know. I think enjoyment still comes pretty highly as a factor in determining great music - for example, on technical ability alone, you'd be forced to say that Dragonforce are a good band. However, factoring in the enjoyment principle, it would be easy to dismiss them as dull one-trick ponies who have written the same song 40 times.

Green Day have the odd catchy single, but I wanted them to just end after American Idiot. Boring songs that can't be taken seriously when the drummer starts pulling gormless faces during them, and the amount of praise and coverage they get is totally unwarranted
