I recently downloaded the demo, and it's great. I am a huge fan of the Star Wars:Battlefront series, and i'm glad to see Pandemic Studios have brought some of the stronger parts of those game to this. I've spent more time over the past weekend playing the demo than I have any other game. And it only has two maps, each playing the same game type; Conquest. Yet i've found myself unable to turn it off.
For those of you who don't know what the game is. Lord Of The Rings:Conquest, plays much like an online shooter. You're given the role of an anonymous solider, you getted spawned into battle after picking a class or fighting type, you kill everything you can see until you're killed yourself, then you respawn and start again. Obviously, you can do other game types, capture the flag etc. I read that it features one where 16 players go online, 1 is chosen to be Frodo, and the other 15 are Ring Wraiths.
At first, I was skeptical of the combat system employed in the game. I had a feeling that due to the pace and nature of it, trying to execute combos while keeping your character facing your enemies would be a bit frustrating. But it works. You can relentlessly mash square if you want to, but you're more than often going to get cut down by someone who has put a little effort into learning a few basic combos. (An idea that most beat'em ups seem to neglect. Which is why after DOA 2, I stopped playing them.)
Other perks include, going a killing spree and being given the chance to play as a big name in the LOTR world. Gandalf, The Balrog, Isildur, and Sauron are a few. Then you can mount horses or Wargs and go into battle!
I imagine the offline will be fun, but online will naturally be better.
Two sources I have say the game is out on the 16th, and the 14th. Either way, I'll be buying it. Fallout 3 really is going to be put away for the next few months. Anyone who played and liked the SWBF games, I urge you to buy this.
I can see it being the best and most successful game to come out of the LOTR license.
