Now I just read this and found it very interesting, and never realized the symbolism that's actually in Nibelheim in relation to the game. This article points out lots of the symbolism that drives the plot and make the game great overall. I'd like to know what some of you think about the symbolisms used like Nibelheim, and sometimes I wonder how designers actually come up with the concepts of these towns.. as I want to write a story myself one day. None the less, it's very cool but shameful nonetheless the troves of information abounding but just laying dormant on the public domain.
Sidenote: Always wondered why Supernova could be seen destroying our solar system.

Well, I doubt there was much more thought put into the naming of Cloud's hometown other than "there's a lot of death there; let's name it after the Norse land of the dead!" There's always stuff from Norse Mythology in Final Fantasy games; Odin's attack (in FFVII) is "Gunge Lance" which comes from the name of the mythological Odin's spear, Gungnir. Midgard was the name of the Earth, so they just figured they'd name the city where the game begins after it.
Allusions to Norse mythology do not necessarily have the depth of symbolism that you might expect.

still interesting though.

Norse mythology, on its own, is remarkably interesting. Also, if you like The Lord of the Rings, you should read up on Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen.

It's called Der Ring der Nibelungen...
Aaanyway. As ff1withallthieves already pointed out are mythological references to places, creatures and characters always present.
Gilgamesh, Behemoth, Shiva, Ifrit, Leviathan, Bahamuth, Ramuh, Quetzalcoatl, Asura, Odin, The Knights of the Round - just to name a few across the hole series - are all part in some kind of mythology.

I own property in the Nibel area, it's nice because I get to rent it out to people while I live in Costa Del Sol.

No it's not. "Nibelungen" is a plural noun in the genetive case, so the article that goes with it is "des."

I just checked.
It's actually both versions possible. "Des" and "der".
However, as my native tongue is German, I stand to correct you.
"Nibelungen" seems to be a noun in singular in genitive, hence it goes with "des". All plural nouns in genitive case go with "der" (that's why I first said you were wrong).

hm. for a second i thought they were really onto something... but it's still a great game. still, i believe it does goes a bit deeper than a quick hey, lets do this moment. maybe someone should do a report on ffvii's ties with norse mythology for a sociology project for school.
Yeahh.
I should have done that for school.
Maybe if I had written my essays about stuff I actually knew about, instead of trying to sound smart by picking the topics I did, I might have actually done something good at uni this year.

DELETED SPAM NONSENSE
OMG why are you talking about that on this thread? It's clearly supposed to be about Final Fantasy VII. Gosh, it's as if you're a bot or something.

That's because that was a bot. Remember, folks, if you see any of this nonsense, please don't respond to it. Just post a report about it over at this thread (
Thread 30368), if somebody hasn't reported it already.

"4 8 15 16 23 42" is that your sig? 4 8(4+4; 4x2) 15(8+7; 8+(4+3); 8+(8-1)) 16(15+1; 15+(7+4=11=1) 23(16+7; 16+(.........
unless it's a lottery ticket or fortune cookie or your stupid computer's serial number, the only way I see that series continuing is by the next number being 43 or 44 and it includes nth numbers in the series making the equation change or fill in as numbers are added to the existing set i.e.
4 ((2nd integer - 1) + (1st integer x 2))
that would make the second number in the series 8 seeing as there isn't a second number yet to include in the equation (italics) and would make the third number in the series what it is in this case. The others just don't exist on this planet. err..forum.
uhhh...that article almost had me at "Nibelheim was the..., were it not for Sephiroth would not have influenced cloud and party yadayada" thought it was saying "were it not for sephiroth would not have..." nvm. drink summore vittles..
way to turn the game inside out, some parts the creators do professionally extricate from history and translate into educational entertainment. except for FFIX...at first it was just Zidane someone posted as their avatar, the soccer player, but then I saw a picture of Steiner somewhere as a baseball player..unless it was during my street bum dreaming today..
