Checked the first 4 pages and nothing so... Yeah.

Saw this movie just now. I wasn't expecting much, tbh. After watching though, this has become one of my favorite movies. It really gave off an intense vibe for me that not many movies do.

Of course it's not without its faults. I don't like how the monster was never explained. I don't like the cameraman's constant "DID YOU SEE THAT?!"

Other than that, it left me wanting to watch it again, which I will do so. Hell, I think I'll buy it.

Thoughts? Opinions? Disagreements?

I think it's a very visually pleasing film, but as dumbed down for mass audience as you can get. That being said, I enjoyed the action as long as I didn't think too hard. As long as I'm shouting "Dude! A monster!" like the fools running around on-screen, it works.

It's a monster horror film, in the POV of the "victims." It was never meant to be an intelligent movie that made you think.

I also have to give props for the camera usage. No other POV film has made me feel like I was there more than Cloverfield.

Of course it's not Blade Runner or anything, but it's blatantly unchallenging which I find atypical considering the creators involved, namely J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias, MI: 3)

Man, that is so much lamer than some of the concept sketches I saw

Thanks DJ <333

Actually, it was this toy that comes up in Cloverfield searches I was hoping for:

No problem. :D

That figure looks pretty bad ass though. And weirdly Cthulhu-ish. Definitely better than the movie monster.

i bought the movie.
it doesnt feel the same seeing it on a tv compared to an imax screen with ultraloud sound, but the movie is so awesome!

and well, there was no explanation to the monster IN the movie becuase that actually adds realism to the movie.
why would a partygoer bother to ask around where the hell did that thing come from instead of running for his life.

Err.... I was stoked to see this after its trailer @ transformers. I even got sucker'd in by the viral marketing, visiting all the sites to try and figure this one out before it opened. I'd have to say that the movie did not let me down. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Part 2 allegedly in the works, websites up with cryptic clues....

I thought it was awful. I can understand what they're going for, but the entire film had me looking at my watch for two reasons, so I could look away from the scenes where they put the camera on a paint shaker and carried it arround (which accounts for at least 80% of the movie), and to see just how much longer I had to endure. What makes the second reason worse is that it's less than 90 minutes. This is the age where all movies seem like they have to be at least two hours long for some reason. None of the characters were relatable, let alone likable. If I wanted to hear some dope say "Dude, brah, dude, dude, brah, dude, brah, dude, DUDE, brah!" for eighty minutes, I would've gone to the Bank of America parking lot and hang out with the kids who loiter around there. The monster design is atrocious. It's like the director waited until they were adding the cgi and told them to let a five year old draw up a monster within five mintues. Long story short, I didn't like it and I can't find anything of merit about it.

I didn't want an explanation during the camcorder event, but I was hoping for one after. Like, this is supposed to be being viewed in a military base (assuming since the beginning had a "PROPERTY OF U.S. ARMY DO NOT DUPLICATE" watermark) so maybe someone could have popped in and explained the aftermath?

But then again, Chewey's right. I was curious so I dug up the info online. Plently of it, but I still want more. :(

You shouldn't have to dig around to get a backstory it should be in the actual film.

I saw Cloverfield when it was in cinemas and I was dissapointed. I'm a big fan of Lost and so I expected a lot from this film because of J.J Abrams but it was just meh. For a start nothing happens for the first 20 minutes, that's a quarter of the film! I understand they were going for realism etc. but it was too much, I nearly fell asleep. Things did get better though when something actually decided to happen. It became an entertaining but slighty frustrating film. However the only part I would describe as better than average would be the ending which to be fair was very good. The monster was weird in a good kind of way. The lack of origin/ backstory really pissed me off, hopefully the second will be better and explain more.

Maybe if the film was about the monster, yeah, but the film is about a group of friends and what happened during the night the monster attacked.

I thought it was a pretty descent movie... the only thing that keeps me from giving it more praise was the fact I left the theater feeling like crap from motion sickness...

It was probably a good thing I never saw the Blair Witch Project... probably would have experienced the same deal.

Blair Witch actually had worse camera shake.

Like, only 2 minutes of that movie are still enough to know what's going on...

Awesome movie.

The things complained about where decisions instead of mistakes. Once you realize what they were going for, love it or hate it, it can be appreciated.

I thought the CGI was pretty good, and them parasite monsters gave me the jitters, but overall I thought it was rather crap. A friend of mine summed it up very well: "Godzilla for the Facebook generation".

I went in hating it just from what I've read about it/the fact that it's filmed in Blair witch cam, but after seeing it I enjoyed it. Wasn't the greatest or the least bit innovative and I was disappointed with the monster design but in the end it's a fun monster movie with more suspense then most.

In the bonus features they describe the monster as a lost baby that just woke up ans is looking for it's mother, it's not looking to destroy anything , it just got woken up by the meteor that fell in the sea during some of the flashbacks.

Quarantine was not better than Cloverfield. Fact.
If anything was mildly better than Cloverfield in the realm of horror it would be the movie that quarantine was based off of: a movie from Spain entitled Rec.
I believe that they're making a sequel to it was we speak though.

I bought Cloverfield on blu ray btw. Not much of a step-up from DVD, and I agree that the theatre going Cloverfield was the best option.

Comparing Cloverfield and [REC] is like comparing Godzilla and Night Of The Living dead, why?

If we put on side the fact that both were filmed from a victim point of view with a handheld camera, they are two different genre movies.

The other is a thriller monster movie that takes place in a huge city and the other is a zombie horror thriller that takes place in an enclosed building.

And so on and on, but yeah. I just think you can't compare them.

avilslare
09-24-2009, 03:17 PM
You can compare them in the way that if you see them in the theater, they're both nauseating. I saw Cloverfield in the theater and even though I enjoyed it, I almost threw up afterward because of the jerky camera view.

I happened to appreciate Cloverfield, myself. I felt it was a refreshing new take on the Giant Monster genre, in that the "heroes" weren't exactly heroes in that they didn't learn everything about the monster and end up defeating it. They were more average joe's like you and me, just summoning the courage to save a friend/girlfriend, in this monster attack.

I will say though, my favorite line in the whole movie:
BETH: "What IS that!?"
HUD: "Um.... its a HORRIBLE thing."

I didn't like Quarintine, so much about it was laughable and it really wasn't scary in the slightest, the mouth fuck with the camera scene and the utter stupidity of the characters is just ridiculous, REC however is fucking scary and I almost had a heart attack at the end of the film.
