once upon a time, Edgar and his crew (big it up, etc etc) were going thru extremely dangerous and XTREME (phat indeed) rapids, on a small raft (which he is able to stand on without needing to balance himself!) when they came across an octopus thingy wotsit.
now, this vile creature from the depths would be no problem...if i didnt have to keep Banon alive.
the octopus always whacks Banon, and even when Banon defends, he still gets taken out with one of the tentacle attacks.
please help me!
(eh, this is my first visit to the FF5 and 6 part of FFshrine, and i noticed Misao wanted interesting threads...well, i tried my best to make it sound interesting :p )

The way I ended up beating Ultros (I think that's the octopus' name) was by having Banon constantly using his health skill (which heals your party for about 200 HP each turn), and having Sabin use his Aurabolt blitz (or Pummel, if you haven't learnt Aurabolt yet), having Edgar use one of his stronger tools (like "Drill" if it's accessible that early in the game, again I can't remember for sure. If not use the crossbow), and then have Terra either heal the party using cure, or throwing fire at Ultros. Hopefully it'll be enough to keep Banon alive with two people healing and two people attacking.
hey, thanx, but Ultros has this move where he either attacks the whole party with lots of tentacles, doing medium damage, or he uses one tentacle on one person, which does heavy damage. everyone can survive that attack, apart from Banon, even if he is on full health
while we're here...i cant get Sabin's blitz techniques to work, and i have checked, they are the right button combo's
(geez, i am super crappy at this FF :o )

maybe if you change banons order(the back row)and then defend...?
...that's just a small tip but maybe it makes a diffrence...???

Just Level build. there is a place, not long before you encounter Ultros, where it asks you if you want to go left or right. Choose Right, and it SHOULD take you on a loop. this is an IDEAL spot to build-up, as you can just have the Party-members doll out attack as Zero reccomends. WHATEVER you do, do not use Fire while leveling up. save that for The boss battle. as for a way to heal-USE BANNON. he's the reason this is a perfect spot....ENDLESS healing, and a Fair amount of EXP & Gold. Hope this helps.

i don't have anything else to bring in...i guess.....
just put Banon in defend, let him heal everytime, keep Edgar going on with his tools, Terra = fire, Sabin = aurabolt....

Regarding this problem, are you playing the game on the Super Nintendo, or are you by any chance playing it on the computer via emulator?

Well, sort of. See the thing is, the buttons the game's telling you to push to do the different moves- it's wrong. Those are the buttons that you would push if you had a Super Nintendo. So if you want to figure out what the actual keystrokes you're going to need on your keyboard to do the moves, you'll have to do trial and error to figure it out.

If you have an emultor click options while you play and then click Joypad Configuration so you know what the buttons are.....BTW for Sabin's Pummel it is left right left D on the keyboard.(just so you know what to press)

Excellent! One question on something I still can't figure out though: how do you enter the code when it asks you to enter a diagonal pointing arrow?

Using an emulator instead of the SNES is indeed 'getting used again' with those combo's.
just learn.
hey, thanx ppl. il try to do this octopus, if i keep failing, il start again, and remember to level up (which i h8 doin with a passion!)

Easiest Way to Learn To Do Blitzs Like bum rush And Air Blade Is To a) Also Get A Rom Of Street Fighter 2... That Willl Help You Practice Your Circiling Skills on The Keyboard And b) Perform A Slide (E.g Down To Left) As You Would On A D-pad But With your Fingers once You get the Hang of it youll Be Fine. Also may I Suggest Buying FF6 On The Playstation?

So you're saying that if you hold both of the corresponding arrows at the same time, then you can do the diagonal arrow? (I.E., to do a diagonal arrow that's pointing down and towards the left, you would hit both the down arrow and the left arrow on the keyboard at the same time?)
i managed to sort out the control, and the Octopus is now sleeping with the fishes :D
thanx people
