I think Garamond's hit the nail on the head there - EA buying Take2 would give them a monopoly on the sports market - which is what they need to compete with Activision Blizzard, who have a monopoly on the EVERYTHING market at the moment (WoW, Guitar Hero and Call of Duty).
EA realises they've got an actual competitor for the first time in history, and they're desperate to gain some ground.

Raiden, sorry but that's incorrect. Just because they have those key games does not equal to a monopoly. Last I checked each of those games have competitors. In fact, I'm sure Guitar Hero is losing out to Rock Band.

I don't mean monopoly in the literal sense - if an actual monopoly was created, the merger between Activision and Vivendi Games wouldn't have been allowed by the international oversight committies and the FTC.
But the fact is, with WoW at 10 million subscribers, and Guitar Hero and Call of Duty sales in the millions, they are in a very strong position.
Also, Rock Band is more of a media darling than Guitar Hero, but its high price, and delayed launch in other countries, means that it has nowhere near the sales.

I won't argue that.
I've always wondered, about the WoW 10 million, if they count Chinese gold farmers, multiple accounts, and trials.
From my point of view, nothing good can arise if EA takes over Take 2.

I don't think it's that big a deal - Take2 is a relatively small company which happens to have a mega-hit. I think the only way we'll continue to see high quality games is with giant corporations like EA and Activision Blizzard, because games development is ridiculously expensive these days.
As for the 10 million subscribers count, it's active subscriptions - so they do count gold farmers and multiple accounts (NOT multiple characters on the one account), but they don't count trials.

Out of interest, if EA take over Take-2 would that give EA the power to set release dates and development time for Rockstar Games?
If that is the case I just get a horrible feeling that EA might try and rush out games and not let Rockstar have the time needed to dish out a quality product such as GTAIV.
