I never found a real use for the colusseum, except to lose items from getting sneezed to death. The only time it was usefulw as to get shadow back.
Anyone else?

Actually, you can upgrade your weapons by fighting in the colusseum. Sometimes you might even get some rare/strong weapons. You can upgrade the ragnorak into an illumna(the best sword) here.

you can get more Exp Eggs from there
If i remember correctly, you bet an Elixir for a Rename Card, and then bet the Rename Card for the Exp Egg.

Yeah, like they said... there's lots of freat weapons & items to be found there. The Illumina sword should be enough of a reason :D . I remember getting a whole lot of Genji armor and other cool accessories.

Uses of the Colusseum:
To get the Illumina (255 attack 7vigor mag attack 7stamina 7defense, 50% phys evade 50% magic evade...always does critical, same damage from back row...randomly casts pearl) Trade in the ragnarok sword (you have to have gotten it in stead of the magicite from the guy in Narshe in the WoR) Paladin sheild also teaches ultima FYI.
To get Mirage Vest (some stats, and casts "blink" at beginning of every battle on the wearer) its the same effect fenrir casts on you when you summon him. i've heard if you re equip your weapon in battle the effect returns (so you dont ever lose HP from physical attacks, if it works) Use the thornlet to get it, you get thornlet off of the boss in ebots rock.
Here is the best use of the Colusseum other than the Illumina...you'll love me for this one.
Go hunt in the Dinosaur forest east of gau's father's house. Kill them for EXP, but also for the Imp Halberds (or steal the Imps Armor, those work too). Go to the Colusseum...
Trade things in in this order to get the following items
Imps armor --> Imp Halberd --> Cats Hood --> Merit Award --> Rename Card --> Tintinbar --> EXP egg
sorry if the order on that is off, but it should be close enough.
The Merit Award lets a character equip stuff not usually available to him/her. Ex: Setzer can use Sabin's claws, or Relm can use plate armor.
The EXP egg gives a character double EXP per kill
The Tintinbar heals the person its equipped on while you walk on the map, or in a town or dungeon.
The Cats hood gives you max GP per battle.
I hope that helps...=)

Are you officially crazy?
Where else could I get my beloved Illumina. Colliseum is the most important place in the game.

Not only is the Illumina sword the most powerful, it blocks 50% of all attacks. My favorite sword of all time, (and if you cheat and get 2 witth the genji glove, your invincible, but whats the fun.)

FFVI has the most side quests ( and they are actually FUN) not like in FFVIII, where you had to run around the map finding little things sitting around near water and forests..like deranged monkeys. And then there was FFXI, where you wanted to SHOOT your chocobos for not digging deep enough. Hearing "kweh!" can make my eye twitch, any time of the day.
