I'm finally thinking of picking up a DS soon just for this game (among other games, this is the straw that broke the camel's back). this game has caught my attention based on the type of game play, style, music, etc.

I originally wanted an onyx black DS, but now that I have a Wii, I think I want a white one so they match, kinda like my PS3 and PSP.

Anywho, what do you know about this game and are you looking forward to it?

I think it's funny that people will complain about final fantasy games getting rehashed and old, but when square makes games that are a little different.. 'pfft, I'll just wait for the next final fantasy..'

not that this game will be that different from most square games.. damn emo heroes...

I don't complain (just like most people here) about them not doing other games. If I want anything other than Star Ocean, Dragon Quest, Mana or Final Fantasy games, I get games from other developers.

What I complain about is Nomura. That guy can't seem to create anything original even if he'd put half his life into it.

I will agree that Nomura doesn't have a creative bone in his body. I'm not a big fan of his carbon-copy character designs in final fantasy, not even that big a fan of kingdom hearts. But hell, this game looks fun, and I'm not going to discredit a game simply because Nomura had his hand in it.. the gameplay, story (maybe?) and general presentation of the game look very entertaining. The soundtrack will be pretty great too, judging from the gameplay video's I have seen.

Too bad the game is fantastic and is way more original than any other DS game you've played. Heaven forbid we encourage Square to make a game that isn't FF, KH, or DQ.

This game gets a lot of praise in IGN, but I'm really not considering touching it any time soon.

Also, the black DS is beautiful! I would recommend it over the white, but thats just taste. There is a Red version coming out soon though.

I've played it a bit and I found it great, it has a good story, with a lot of plot twists and the extra missions (the secret reports) are sometimes challenging (ex: beating the last boss in hard... it's too hard even on normal T_T)

The soundtrack is nice, but a few songs if you listen them too much they get annoying. But overall it's a great game.

The score composed by Takeharu Ishimoto. The same guy that did Before Crisis and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

Really amazing game. I'm not a S-E fan, not a Kingdom Hearts fan, and I tend to get really picky to Action-RPGs. But damn, this one just does about everything he tries right. It's creative, innovative, and fun. I'm not a portable gamer myself, but this game has really sucked me in.

"This" year's best DS game, without a doubt. Probably my second best experience in the system, losing only to the Ouendan/EBA series.

Nothing wrong with not caring for it, but you should still be able to acknowledge that it is one of the most clever and creative games to come along in a good while. You really ARE a fool if you can't see that.

Tycho from Penny Arcade wrote a really neat summary that made me very eager to play it:

I really feel as though The World Ends With You has bored out my consciousness, widened it, that I might have room to store the concepts it presents. It's made me a kind of host organism for its glory, and in the proud tradition of host organisms I'm here to pass on my writhing payload.

This is a game that makes digestion cool. Many games have food, it's classic really, but how many games model the size of your stomach? Foods act as buffs, with ongoing effects that last a certain number of battles, capped off with a permanent increase when they complete. This makes me so happy that I want to pop the fucking cartridge out and kiss it.

It's relatively easy to get your head around the game's notion of "In" brands that give you advantages in specific districts, with an escalating hierarchy of cool that confers ever more potent effects - but even the weapons are branded. In this game, your weapons are called "Pins," which act as its Pokmon Equivalent. They are ultra-desirable, have custom art, and there's a fuckload of them. The Pins themselves gain experience in a number of ways, leveling and sometimes evolving. These pins bristle with twinkling systems, let me show you them:

- First, they represent substantial custom combo potential, with many unique touchscreen interactions.

- Turn off your DS, and when you turn it back on, your currently equipped pins will have earned XP for up to seven days.

- Each pin has another set of statistics, parallel to the standard ones, for use in a mini-game called "Tin Pin Slammer."

- Set the game to "Mingle Mode" and earn a special variety of experience each time your system comes in contact with another wireless DS, regardless of what they're playing. I hope people are still slotting this game when PAX rolls around, because I think I could retire on that kind of XP.

There isn't time here to talk about the game's bizarre yet deeply groovy approach to two screen combat, or its sparkling, gloom-banishing soundtrack, or its omnipresent supernatural art. it's a game you can attempt to contain linguistically, but in the end you just sort of gesture toward the closest games retailer. I don't mean to be such a discount swami, but the game itself argues a very strong case.

Wattson
05-06-2008, 03:49 AM
Okay sorry about double post but I've tried it out and so far I kinda like it except the main character is frustrating and I don't like him or feel any attachment to him since I'm not an angsty 14-year-old, and either I'm just doing it wrong but the combat is more frustrating than cool. It's like, if it controlled well it would be fun but since half the time when I try to move the main character he doesn't I just die too often. Also enemies drop money supposedly but I never see it when I check how much money it is? I don't understand that.

Shitsux? Maybe not. I haven't given up yet. But so far, although I like the concept, I'm not even sure if it's playable.

Edit: This time I'll edit. I got some advice and played more. Apparently you get money in the form of mastered pins that you then exchange in your inventory for cash (when you play you'll understand, haha). Also I had just been using bad pins basically and that's why it was a source of trouble. It's still not an easy game, but I'm getting the hang of controlling both characters and now I think it's one of the more entertaining games I've played on the ds.

That game is a suck a wierd settings which it will about the games organized by a Reapers. Just saying that "Fail and face erasure." This means a mission. Partners really works together so say.

About the musics, it rocks. I never expect the Square-Enix could accept this. :D

Wattson
05-10-2008, 08:10 AM
Personally I find the music mediocre, but it's gameplay is amazing and it's definitley one of the best games on the ds. Story so far is "ehh" since I just hit the first plot twisty kind of thing finished the first week and now with the new partner I'm like "what's the point?" plus his voice is annoying, but I'll perservere cause I know it'll pick up again as soon as I actually play.

The big problem I think I have is that I'm waiting for my pins to evolve with shut down pp, or at least accumulate enough so I can feel safe using them for battle, so it's annoying that the game is like "lol don't play me"

Wattson, from where you are on there will be loads of things you were not expecting in the story until the end of the game by which time there will be unexpected things happening many times on the same day. The part of the game you finished is dull IMO in comparison to the rest of the game which is much deeper.

I really like this game because the story can really make you think, the battle system is incredibly well-crafted to fit the DS, and the music, which was annoying at first but with how good the game ended up for me turned out to be quite entertaining (though there are people who would disagree). The presentation of the game is very sophisticated and hard to keep up with though (both the battle system and the story), so I can see this game becoming a cult classic, which is unfortunate since IMO this game deserves better.

This game should is one of those "must have" titles if you own a DS, at least that's what I think. The battle system which I thought was a little awkward at first soon became somewhat of an enjoyable challenge, loved the story and how all the answers came together at the end, I enjoyed watching the main character start maturing as a person. Basically I truly loved this game, hopefully many others will too if they give it a chance.
