OK, hear this:

I have a PS3, and naturally, I would love to be able to play online. However, there is a problem.

I don't have a wireless router and am depending on Wi-Fi to pick up a WLAN connection from someone else in my apartment complex. The thing is, whenever I edit my network settings, the following message comes up:

"DNS Error - (80710102)"

I'm not really expecting this to work, but the fact that it accepts the IP address I've randomly put in there is kind of getting my hopes up; it just has trouble connecting with the server. Any suggestions?

I can see exactly what the problem is (I should since I deal with this stuff for a living) but I refuse to help you because I would cave your face in if I caught you leeching my connection.

If you can afford a PS3 and games for it, you sure as shit should be able to afford a cheap wireless router.

Would you cave my face in, really?

And the network, I found out, is coming from the clubhouse in my complex. Last I checked, 'leeching' off of that signal isn't a crime, so you may want to take back your furious little rant, Prak.

Disregard this post.

does this mean you actually have no internet? You would rather use wireless then run an ethernet cable into your PS3? Or your router only has 1 ethernet output and thats already going into your PC?

I just forked out over a grand for gum surgery, so no, I cannot afford a router at the moment.

I have Internet, but my router is completely on the other side of the apartment. That, and what you stated above - it only has 1 ethernet output. So, I'm trying to go the easy-way-out and use the clubhouse's wireless internet connection. I get a small 20-30% signal from the clubhouse, and it receives an IP address just fine. It just cannot "communicate" with the DNS server, and that is where the error occurs.

Actually, yes it is if it's not for public use. One the other side of my neighborhood, there was a suspicious car parked in front of a house once a week for like 2 hours. Someone called the cops and they came and took the guy in. What was he doing? Using their internet with his laptop. If it's for personal use and you don't have permission to use their internet, then it is illegal and you will get fined and/or go to jail for like 48 hours I believe.

Then if the only problem is your internet is on the other side of the apartment, well with all due respect because you are a cool guy, I'm gonna have to agree with Prak that if you can afford a PS3 and games then you should be able to get a wireless router.

Just sayin'. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/nine_fenrir/robot%20faces/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Maybe none of you read my above post regarding the money issue and the fact that the club house in my complex PROVIDES the wireless internet connection.

All I was looking for was an answer to my problem. I'm committing no crime, yet you all fail to see that. :eye:

Prak, if we all wire you some money will you help this guy with his problem?..pretty please

No, because I'm FURIOUS.

But seriously, a 30% signal isn't enough for online gaming, so I'll point him in the right direction.

If you've entered a random IP address anywhere, you've already gone wrong. I don't know the PS3's network settings, but anything requiring an IP will require a very specific one, and the chances of getting it right on a random guess are lower than your odds of striking oil in your kitchen sink.

The IP address isn't the problem. Connecting with the DNS server is.

Go directly to FAIL. Do not pass GO. Do not collect $200.

Heaven forbid someone who earns a paycheck by dealing with such things should know better than you.

Not that I care, because as I said before, I have no intention of offering any significant help.

Then don't.

Also, my dearest Prak, I know plenty of people like you who assume they know everything that there is to know about their profession. Hate to say it on your part - I know how respected you are in this community, and how much everyone defends every little thing you say - but sometimes people aren't as brilliant as they make themselves out to be. I'm no idiot, and I know I have the correct IP address. It isn't random like you are assuming; I've spoken with several Geek Squad members to know that for a fact.

And, to top it all off, I have solved this little problem and am happily enjoying PSN without the use of a router. No more input is needed from you.

Then why the fuck did you say this?

...but the fact that it accepts the IP address I've randomly put in there is kind of...

Don't use the word random if what you're doing isn't fucking random. Thanks for wasting my time with your stupidity.

Also, every Geek Squad person I've ever spoken to is a twat who knows nothing about networking, but is way too far up their own ass to realize it. Maybe mentioning that is a bit of an aside, but I despise those bastards so much that I have to say it every time they get mentioned.

EDIT: Since your problem is solved and the thread is of no more use to anyone, and for the sake of heading off the inevitable flame-fest, I'm closing this now.
