I'd like to know what the best ports of Final Fantasy's I - VI are, since I have yet to properly play them.
I tried playing the PS1 port of VI, but felt that it suffered from lag while navigating the menus and the loading times were very annoying. Should I go with the Gameboy version? The same for IV and V maybe? I've also noticed that I and II have been released on the PSP with some really nice redrawn graphics. Are they worth getting?

Welcome to the forum and thanks for not being like all the other noobs who post stupid shit about "Who would Win in a fight" or just starting a thread asking what our favorite final fantasy is.
Anywho, I would say get the Gameboy Advance remakes. The PS1 remakes are nice but the load times suck. Tell us what systems you have, anything on the GBA or DS, or PSP would be fine. But, for FF6, FF4, or Chrono Trigger, if you have a working SNES, get the originals in a used game store or ebay, they are the best. Thats just my opinion though, because I hate hand helds.

For FF I-II, you can go the Final Fantasy Origins route, on the PSOne. The load times are pretty much non-existent.
FF III ---> DS
FF IV ---> Final Fantasy Chronicles for the PSOne.
FF V and VI... You should try them on the GBA. But FF VI is way better on the SNES. The PSOne version is filled with load times that makes going into your menu pretty tiresome.

OK, thanks for the advise. I have a DS, PSP and Playstation at my disposal. I'll definately be getting VI Advance and probably V Advance. Is there something wrong with IV Advance, Hynad, since it didn't make your list? I also see there's gonna be a 3D remake of IV like III for the DS. I might hold out for that, since I have these other fantasies to play!

There is nothing wrong with FF IV Advance. I just prefer playing it on the PS because it is completely truthful to the original Hard Type version of it (the original Japanese version), and because the sound quality is a lot better.
Also, I am waiting for the DS version as well. But if you want to see how it all started, you should try the original version before playing the DS version.
On the other hand, since you're not really a fan of the game, it won't affect you the same as many of us here. Who have really fond memories of it. The game will most likely put a really good nostalgia feeling in us. But that can't do the same thing to someone played the original for the first time during the same year of the DS release.

Yes, I just remembered that too, The PSOne version would be the best since it's closest to the original Hard Type. Good point Hynad

lol, yeah, if you wouldn't mind. ;-)
I've decided to give the PSP versions of I and II a try, since I don't have any of the other versions. I'm finding it really hard to track down a copy of VI Advance, but I'll keep trying (I live in the UK and would prefer not to import).

The PSP versions of I & II are almost the same as the GBA Dawn Of Souls release, but with brilliantly sharp graphics and an extra dungeon for I, though not sure about II. Also, they include the FMV sequences from the PS1 Origins release. Overall, a neat little package if you don't have either already. I got my PSP versions this morning and I'm really enjoying it, though it's very different from the later 3D games.

Yes, those are the ones, and they are out now. The date reads 8th Feb 2008 for the international release (10 days ago). For reasons beyond me, some parts of the world list dates as mm/dd/yy and others dd/mm/yy. That's why we in the UK scratch our heads when, for example, somebody mentions 9/11. We would say it as 11/9, but I guess 9/11 rolls off the tongue a little easier...
