You've heard it talked about incessantly, and you've heard me chime in with "thieves is harder!" Well, ponder that question no more! I am playing with all White Mages (and confirming for all of those who had any doubt my lack of a life). So far, I'm getting a very strong sense that Thieves was indeed harder, but we'll see if the latter parts of the game get worse. I know the very beginning was worse for WMs, but once you learn Ruse with everybody it gets much easier than Thieves.
Further, I will have bragging rights beyond what I ever could have imagined. I will post again with updates on my progress.
Currently, I am in Elfland leveling up. I am at level 4. With thieves, I could never have leveled up here; the creeps would've torn me apart, but with Ruse it's actually quite doable to fight groups of Ogres and Creeps.

You've beaten my "having no life record", but by only a few hairs. Any chance of posting a clip on youtube to confirm the validity of your victory?

I'm afraid I don't have much of a means of recording it. For this one I'm using an emulator (you'll have to take my word for it that I'm not using the "save state" function or using frameskip for leveling up) so I can get a screenshot of the end of the final boss battle. I beat it with all thieves on the NES, and I don't even know if that game is still saved on the cartridge.
Oh, and I beat it with all black belts last semester.

At the risk of sounding like a pedantic asshole, calling "pix or it didn't happen" on FF1 is pretty unnecessary. He's proved his expertise many times over on FFS. I think he's been here long enough that we can take his word on things of this nature.

Yeah, I could tell he only wanted to see sort of what it looked like. I mean, even when you believe something happened, you still want to see it with your own eyes.
I'm at level 5 right now fighting east of Pravoka. Geists get their asses raped, but enemies other than that (GrOgres, Arachnids) give me trouble. This is the most tedious part of the game.

My last team composed of a Warrior, White Mage, Ninja, and Red Mage all to face Chaos, I haven't tried it again since my first play through. After checking this thread i'm interested to start a new game with a different variety :D

If you had the Warrior class, does that mean you were playing DOS or Origins? In either case, the game is much easier to beat than the NES version.

I bought origins back when they were barely re-releasing I-VI on their greatest hits series, I also snagged Xenogears along with them :D I still had difficulty with the PS1 version, but not nearly as much as with FFII.

I suck at FF classic, is FFI the one where they level up weapons and skills? Or is it the one where the main characters are named after their job?
FF1WithAllThieves
01-29-2008, 09:46 PM
FFII is the one where you level up skills; FFI is the one where your characters are completely nameless and faceless and you simply choose their character class and names so that you can tell them apart. They have no individuality other than their abilities, so my characters have no individuality at all.

I believe this deserves a double post:
I just got class change!
Man, there were some pretty awesome battles. And by awesome I mean time-consuming. Against Astos, I muted him and cast Ruse on myself multiple times, so he literally never did any damage to me or had any kind of effect at all. But it took me 11 minutes to kill him.
And the Vampire and Lich were undead, so they were toast.
The Ice Cave was not fun; I died repeatedly against Mages using Rub, as well as Cockatrices turning my characters into stone. I came out of the dungeon with a dead person and a stoned person, but I made it.
Castle of Ordeals wasn't too bad, but I ran into shitty luck a couple of times (Sorcerors).
So my next objective is to level up some more, then actually beat the Gurgu Volcano (which I skipped temporarily, if you noticed).

As you can see, I have achieved victory. I levelled up to 30, which gave me 4 level 8 spells per person, which was enough to take down Chaos. Tiamat the second time was tough, since I couldn't use the Bane Sword, but I went and got the Masmune and gave it to Wilt and won with physical attacks (something I never thought I'd do after Astos).
My official conclusion: all thieves is a SHITLOAD harder than all white mages, and anybody that thinks otherwise is simply ignorant.

I'm sure It can not be done with out cheats. At first you may get a few levels but later levels you won't be able to do it.
I never once used a thief or monk
I only used fighter, Red-Black and white mage in these combos.
Fighter, Fighter, White, Black
Fighter, White, Black, Black
Fighter, Red, White, Black
Fighter, White, White, Black (pretty long fights against non undead)
EDIT ADD
I still stand by my white mages comment but I willa dmit I never tried all white mages. Does the game actualy change some to fit your choice?
Also have you ever killed the fire elemental last before going to the ruined temple? I have.. I'm sure you have tried

I beat Chaos many times, first time when I was 15 years old. That was oh back arround 1993 I think?
Sorry but I just was never attracted to a full party of white mages, perhaps it could be done but I just did not find it likely.
About the first post part, I mainly came to open a FTP share up in your media section but was not sure if it was allowed since all I saw was links TO music instead of someone actualy sharing.
Now, have you beaten Lich Kraken Tiamat Kary in that order?
Also I will agree the updated version on Playstation sucks compared to original except I sorta like the fast walk.

Yeah, I've also started mine, It's harder than white mages, due to the fact that they have low defense, and no magic spells at all. So you gotta spend tons on Heal Potions.
But I'm just about to fight Lich with them, and the Earth Cave is annoying as hell.

Are you playing the NES version? If so, then watch out for "Earth" She's a mean one and will demolish your blackbelts if you give her a chance.
The Vampire isn't something to laugh over either.
FF1WithAllThieves

To answer your questions, I ONLY used the speed up function when I was buying items. Levelling up with frameskip is cheating to me, but I draw the line at buying items, due to the fact that it takes five minutes to do it and it requires no skill whatsoever.
Also, no, I am not going to beat it AGAIN with all thieves. That would be stupid. And I don't have screenshots from that game because I played it on an actual NES with a cartridge. I think the game's still saved on there, if memory serves.
Anyway, it'll be a while before I play through this game again, I can tell you. There's nothing left to do in this game for me, really.
Also, in THIS game I beat the fiends in this order: Lich, Tiamat, Kraken, Kary. I know that's a little weird, but spellcasting items are really important with a party of white mages.
For those of you who are playing with all thieves now, I can offer advice if you ever want it. Just PM me if you need help with anything.

Yeah I managed to beat the Earth cave and got my canoe.
I usually skip the volcano cave till I get my airship, so I headed in the direction of the ice cave and saved right outside of it.

LOL.
I see the post is dated 2008, I started playing and beating Final Fantasy with different variations of quartets, and one day pondered. Who in the heck would even try to beat the game with 4 White Mages. To hear it is harder to play with four Thieves/Ninjas was very interesting to hear, and I will have to think about why that would be so. But, don't worry, I believe you when you state that they are in fact harder.
I won't even attempt the task of four white mages on the old NES version of the game. But now I must try it with the Android phone version of he game. Sounds like it won't be too hard, and I will learn some cool tricks about the game.
Thanks for the hysterically funny story.

I've been playing FF1 for years now... helps me fall asleep (lol). I've done all the 4xClass runthroughs... mostly on original FF1 (with NES emulators) (on my old PSP - it's pretty awesome)
Anyway - tidbits to help:
1) When leveling at the start, once you have HRM2 you can try taking on ZomBulls at the Peninsula Of Power. Bring lots of 75gp tents for saving.
2) The very second you get the canoe, go immediately to the Citadel of Trials to pick up the Heal Staff and more importantly: the Gauntlet! Using the Gauntlet as an item casts LIT2 and makes things a lot easier.
