Pass: Mr. President

Uploaded this for a few people in the request section but I figured more people would like to know about it. I also finished ripping all the tracks and will be uploading one track every day (I'm doing it this way because my upload speed is absolute shit and it would take far too long to upload them all at once.)

Let's start with the title screen music.
http://www.filefactory.com/file/d59a7e/

Just a note: Tracks with [!] in the title mean that I named them after the stage or place where it plays. Also, there are three tracks that would be "impossible" to rip because they play during a cutscene where there's lots of talking and the volume goes up and down like a fucking rollercoaster, it's really annoying.

This is one of those 3.
http://www.filefactory.com/file/30787a/

If you guys don't mind the volume I guess I could do the other two. Anyway, enjoy! Hope you look forward to the rest of the tracks, this game has some of my favorite music.

You are awesome!

There's an LP of this game in the works, so go see it. (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2732662&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=1)

Thank you, I did see that thread while looking for ways to rip the music. I hope he records the staff roll too, I've been tagging the music with the lead composer for the game but I'm pretty sure there are two or three more artists. I have a pretty good idea of who they are but I'd have to finish the game again to see the staff roll and make sure.

Anyway, today's track is Stage 1: The White House.
http://www.filefactory.com/file/99454b/

I think I'll have time to upload another track later today.

Here's the other track I said I'd upload tonight. I added a fade out to this one because it was a perfect loop. There were only two other tracks that looped that way.

Thanks a lot for the sampler and the track rips. :)

Not sure if I should post this here, but in the other thread you put a .dat file to . I got it to play correctly, what you need is:
- Go here: http://aluigi.altervista.org/papers.htm#xbox and download Xbadpdec
- In the commad line use: xbadpdec.exe -o 0x800 -f 44100 -c 2 file.dat file.wav

The tool converts Xbox adpcms to wav. However the file had a simple header, maybe it's a known format (I'll keep investigating). Meanwhile try it with your files and if everything plays fine I think it'd be better to post the converted files instead (I'd appreciate if you could put Lame vbr mp3s).

If any files need to be looped (they play continuously without fade out in-game) and you can't get them ok, post a sample and I'll see if the header has loop points to do it automatically.

Oh wow, I tried that same application like a year ago and it didn't work. In fact, I used the same one I had just now and it still gave me static, but this new one you just linked me to did it! Now they play perfectly. I'll start decoding them tonight and should have them all ready by Monday morning. By the way, I've been using Lame with the Extreme VBR setting, but if you think there's a better choice let me know and I'll use that one instead.

And today's track, even though I'll be reuploading the ones I put up, is the Load screen music.

And thanks a million Dag, you don't know how much I spent trying to rip these directly from the files!

Dag

Glad it worked fine. I really liked the sampler, can't wait for these direct rips (to keep the best possible quality), though the recordings were very nice too.

These mp3 settings are great, as long as it's Lame vbr it's fine to me.

It was all going well until I ran into two .dat files that have more than one track in them.
http://www.filefactory.com/file/b44a2f/
This one has two in it, if I play it with -o 0x800 the first track plays right but the other one gets messed up. If I use 0x200 the second track plays fine but not the first one. Any idea what to do? I could just edit out the mess, but it's way too much work for the other file since it has about 20 tracks in it. Also, not sure if these are any help but they were on the same folder as the .dat files. If you open these in notepad/wordpad you'll see the name of the files in them but I really have no clue if they're of any use right now
http://www.filefactory.com/file/232b49/
http://www.filefactory.com/file/76d6cf/
The first one is for the .dat I just uploaded and the second one is for the really huge .dat with most of the game's music in it.

Ok they seem easy enough to extract. The XPS files aren't needed (use them to check the extracted files' name), all info is within the file header. Give some time to double check them.

Btw, how are you dealing with looping track? For example the first extracted track simply repeats continually to loop and understand it's meant to loop ("Mwc_briefing(fake)_st.wav", briefing song?). I prefer looping tracks to play twice then fade out unless the track is long (>3 min, I just fade out then), except those that already fade, like the gameover.dat). Something like this: http://www.sendspace.com/file/bwkiui

However wait a bit before you continue ripping. I've realiced the silence created after a file is just padding (ie.- not in the original track) and can be easily avoided by reading the header. That is important for looping tracks, for regular tracks that fade out the it isn't much of a issue I guess, so continue with them if you don't mind that silence.

Also, do other tracks have XPS equivalent? If gameover.dat has could you upload it? (just to make sure of a some things).

The fact there was no oficial soundtrack released, aside from the sampler, is a criminal offense.

Yeah, every track has its own .xps, here's the gameover.dat's
http://www.filefactory.com/file/220c58/

By the way, how do you find the info needed in the header? It would be a big help for the one file with all the music in it. Guessing offsets isn't going too well. For really short looping tracks I was editing them in audacity and making them loop twice, is there an easier way? Let me know how to deal with the big file with all the tracks in it, like if there's an easy way to rip the tracks one by one instead of the whole file at once.

Oh yeah, and since I'm going to reupload them anyway I figured I'd stop uploading the tracks I recorded in order, so have the last boss's music, part 2.
http://www.filefactory.com/file/a136ce/

I agree. There are other From Software games that didn't get soundtracks either so I hunted the games down and ripped the music. So far I finished Frame Gride, Murakumo, and Lost Kingdoms 1 & 2. I still need to find a way to rip the music directly from the video files on Lost Kingdoms though, so they're not quite complete just yet.

Dag
01-21-2008, 09:14 PM
Sorry I wasn't clear enough, basically each file's header says the number of subfiles, sample rate, offset where they start/end, etc. Reading it gets you the subfiles and params correctly:
xbadpdec.exe -o 0x800 -s 0x122bE0 -f 44100 -c 2 story_hokan_st.dat Mwc_briefing(fake)_st.wav
xbadpdec.exe -o 0x123800 -s 0x245658 -f 44100 -c 2 story_hokan_st.dat shuki2.wav
I'm thinking about making a simple program to read the header (easy) and generate these lines to extract files properly (or even in single files as it'd give more accurate wavs).

However to make sure I'd need you to rip and upload the header from the big file (first 0x800 bytes, maybe more). A way to do it would be:
- download HxD here: http://mh-nexus.de/hxd/ (simple, free and fast hex editor, no installation needed)
- open the big file, then Edit -> Select Block. Start offset 0, end offset 3FFF
- Edit -> Copy, File -> New and Edit -> Paste into the new file. Now save that and we are set.

Now about looping, there would be two cases:
- Files that play continuosly, for example both of the above. Using the header we know when they *exactly* end, so if you copy/paste them many times they loop perfectly. For single files if you don't put the size (-s) they have ADDED silence in the end, so the loop isn't quite perfect.
- Files that loop in the middle of the song. If you find any, upload one because most likely the header says where the loops starts/ends exactly, it'd be easier to loop than manually.

So my idea is to send you the program to read headers so you can rerip and loop properly all tracks, even those with files inside, semi-automatically. Btw, the link you posted actually was just gameover.dat, could you reupload the xps?

I'd be interested in those, any links still around? Btw, have you heard From's Evergrace? It's from the same composer as Metal Wolf Chaos, you can tell the style it's still the same though much more "raw" and strange. I was thinking about ripping the sequel (EG2/Forever Kingdom) that never got an OST either.

There's the file I got from the big one, let me know if it's not enough. There really aren't any tracks that loop in the middle, all of them either have an end or loop perfectly from beginning to end, at least from what I remember.

Yeah, Evergrace has some really unique music. He also composed the music for The Adventures of Cookie and Cream, Thousand Land, Chrome Hounds, Murakumo, and both Lost Kingdoms all which need rips because I don't think there was a soundtrack or even a sampler for any of them. I think he's From Software's lead composer, he's on almost every one of their games. If you get around to ripping Forever Kingdom let me know, I really like most of that game's music.

Oh, and about the other rips, I haven't uploaded them anywhere yet because I'm still missing a few tracks on Lost Kingdoms and tags on Murakumo. I know there's an unlockable sound test for Murakumo but that game is a real pain in the ass to play through. I'll get around to uploading them soon enough though.

And here's today's track, the Grand Canyon.
http://www.filefactory.com/file/1d51cb/

Also, here's a track from Murakumo. It's very similar to Metal Wolf Chaos's music.

Ok here is the program: http://www.sendspace.com/file/r3woug

Use "mwcrip.exe file.dat" and it'll make a "mwc_files.bat" you can run with the stuff from the header. I suggest you the following.:

- put mwcrip.exe (and xbadpdec.exe) in the dir with the dats, and use:
for %%x in (*.dat) do mwcrip.exe "%%x"
- The "mwc_files.bat" created now should have info from ALL .dat files in the dir (open it with a text editor and if any lines say "WARNING wrong codec" or so write it here. Shouldn't happen but just in case).
- Run the .bat to convert all dats to wav (watch your disc space!).

That should do it. Not very elegant but hey. Remember that single files now shouldn't have the extra silence as before, and the big files' xps contains the "real" file names (in the order they are extracted).

The program isn't very robust (it only does very minor size checks, it's hard to identify it's actually a mwc header) so only feed it proper files.

Hope it goes all fine.

Wow, that was amazing. It did it all in less than 5 minutes with no problems. Just a few questions before I finish encoding and everything.
Here's one of the looping tracks, I made them loop twice and gave them a 10 second fade out.
http://www.filefactory.com/file/03db4e/
Is that alright?
Should I include the tracks that are already in the sampler? Most of the tracks that were in the sampler are lower quality in the game.
When I'm done I'm just going to rar them all up and leave it uploading overnight. Any site preference?

And I think that's it. Oh yeah, your program also works with Otogi 2 since it uses the exact same type of files as MWC, so you helped rip two games at once.

Dag
01-23-2008, 02:01 AM
The track sounds great to me. Personally I put a second or less of silence at the end so it doesn't mix too much with the next track but it's just nitpicking.

Please include all the files even if they are in the sampler, I'd rather have a 100% complete rip than having to play the sampler just to hear those (besides that way you can tag them. I like to know if a track is a stage or boss theme, etc). It's only 10 more tracks anyway.

Any DL sites are fine to me as long as they you let you DL the full rar without much problem. I've only used sendspace for big files before so I don't know what sites are better...

If you need help with similar files I could give a hand, usually these streamed tracks use the same format/codec but with custom headers that are pretty easy to figure out once you have seen a few (at least in the PS2 games I've ripped).

Rubicon

About time the site worked.

Anyway, here it is. All possible thanks to Dag's program
http://www.filefactory.com/file/3d361c/

Oh yeah, this morning I got working on Otogi 2 since it uses the same files and I got this with your program.

rem WARNING! file X:\Otogi2\stream_m051.dat_1 uses codec 0x1rem WARNING! file X:\Otogi2\stream_m051.dat_2 uses codec 0x1

That's the only file that wouldn't work with it, the other 40+ came out fine. Any ideas?

EDIT: I was thinking about the filenames I gave the tracks and track 29 "Last Boss Dead" not only doesn't sound right it's also not the only place it plays at, so I think a more fitting name for it would be "Victory".

Dag
01-24-2008, 09:58 PM
Thanks a lot for the rip, loving the music so far.

About Otogi, codec 0x01 means they are plain old raw pcm/wav files so no point on using xbadpdec. Here is a quick way to get them. A bit rudimentary but...
- Use this updated mwcrip to get the "warning" lines: http://www.sendspace.com/file/zcj828. It's exactly the same but now it also writes the offset/size of the file.
- Use HxD (hex editor I posted before) to open the file, and Edit -> Select Block. Put the -o value as the start offset (without the 0x) and the -s as the size.
- Copy and paste it to a new file, save it.
- Now open the saved file with a sound editor as raw pcm, (frequency being -f and channels -c, 16bit intel pcm).

That should do it.

Rubicon
01-24-2008, 11:24 PM
Glad you enjoyed the music, it really needed to be ripped.

Didn't even have to convert the one dat file since you said it was pcm/wav. I just tried to open it with Audacity and it played perfectly. I also gave Murakumo another look since I heard some music in the trailers that wasn't in the game but I finally found them, they were hiding from me in other folders. Look forward to Murakumo or Otogi 2 music sometime this week.

EDIT: Another thing, Red Ride on MWC is supposed to be Red Ride 2. I forgot that the first Red Ride is the Murakumo track I uploaded a few days ago.

Yes Metal Wolf Chaos has great music, yes, but can we focus on Otogi for a second? :p
They have same .DAT files from the same From Software company.
Using Xbadpdec kinda works, but it completely messes up the output .WAV, when there is more then one audio files (with different frequencies) in the same .DAT container.

For the love of god, can somebody provide that program that Dag & Rubicon were using years ago to successfully extract the ost?!

Far from complete compared to Rubicon's gamerip, as far as I can tell, but it's the most that can currently be provided.
