I begged and pleaded.
And nobody helped me find them.
But now I have found them.
They're 128kbps but they are BLOODY RARE so I'm not complaining.
Enjoy :)

Hmm, I've just checked the links and they're all good. What's happening when you try to download it?

(Incidentally, I can't claim credit here - I *FOUND* them, but I didn't *RIP* or *UPLOAD* them. The links are from elsewhere.)

"I think I'll finally give these a listen as the plagiarisms can't possibly be as bad as dannyfrench makes them out to be..."

*plays track 1, orchestra begins playing Bill Conti's theme to North and South*

"fuck!"

streichorchester
09-19-2008, 05:18 AM
OST 2 was okay, but OST 3 was hilarious and full of Shostakovich references. What else but a temp track could compel someone to stick that close to the originals? It's worse than McNeely's stealings.

Four more to go.

streichorchester

Finally finished listening to these, and felt the ending of OST 7 was a bit anti-climatic. Anyway, the most obvious plagiarisms were the use of Bill Conti's North and South theme, some of Horner's Willow, Sneakers, The Pelican Brief, Zimmer's Backdraft, Broughton's Silverado, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance, Rozsa's El Cid, Shostakovich's Symphonies 5 and 9, and a Russian-sounding theme I'm pretty sure is Maurice Jarre's Dr. Zhivago, but I could be mistaken.

I think Amano was better in Battle Royale, but then regressed back to his old ways in Battle Royale 2.

Fuff! You're obviously not much of a Goldsmith fan... ;)

Compare "Battle Of The Snowy Mointains" with this track (do listen all the way through if you can stomach it) and discuss... ;)

http://sharebee.com/6706ce12

If that's not more blatant than a vague redux of North and South, and some Shostakovich fading in and out...!

arthierr
09-20-2008, 12:14 PM
Exactly what I was going to say. Goldsmith is quite present in Amano's style.

streichorchester
09-21-2008, 02:32 AM
There's just too much Goldsmith out there for me to internalize right now. I was proud of myself to hear the El Cid references though. Rozsa is not as easy to memorize as Horner or Goldsmith. I'm sure Amano's music is full of Goldsmith references, especially where those timpani/tomtom hits are involved.

OSTs are muxed with stood picture (u wouldn't like them) in the source per episodes, and can be considered as BGM for each whole episode. no cue or other seeking chapter.

jadow81 (https://jadow81.blogspot.de/2012/12/giant-robo-animation-japanese-bd-boxset.html): "While playing the music, the album cover art is shown with zooming and panning. I don't think this is worthless at all. Certainly a fresh recording would be welcome, which would allow for perhaps greater tweaking of the score, but I think this is interesting as a reconceptualization of Amano's exceptional scores for "Giant Robo" into a concert work. Frankly, it's something I wish a lot more film composers would do... but of course it requires far more effort than just throwing all the cues onto a disc in chronological order and calling it a definitive presentation of the music.

That said, I find the "symphonic suite" album of the first episode's score to be a more enjoyable and satisfying listen.

Reading this over again, it kind of sounds like I want film composers to re-edit their existing recordings into "concert suites." I meant that I wish more film composers would reconceptualize the music for concert performance, like Prokofiev creating the Nevsky cantata by reshaping his score for the film, or the supposedly dreaded "album rerecordings" of old where Rozsa, Goldsmith, Williams, et al. would pick highlights and tweak it for optimal musicality separate from the film to create a better listening experience. It's nice to hear the music develop a bit instead of jumping from dramatic beat to dramatic beat when its divorced from the filmic context. But you all probably knew that's what I meant, right?

never mind. I pm'd you. I shouldn't have written that in an open post.

Also, Japanese composers are often accused of plagiarism from westerners. Yoko Kanno is another one. As far as I have read, the Japanese have far different ideas about "ownership" of art and what is copying/influencing. The culture just doesn't see these things as stealing. I'm not an expert, though. Just my novice research.

Maybe Nielsen is the source ^^. It's uncertain, especially if Shostakovich had heard Nielsen's work.

1920-22 - Nielsen, Carl: Symphony No. 5 - 1st movt. Tempo giusto ~ Adagio non troppo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbTBrdB-1KM&t=235)
1939-40 - Shostakovich, Dmitri: Symphony No. 7 "Leningrad" - 1st movt. Allegretto (https://youtu.be/_z8TZjcqYhY?t=446)
1966 - Jarre, Maurice: Is Paris Burning? - The Resistance (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf-Yl3Li9rU&feature=youtu.be&t=191) (Alternative kiwi6 link (http://kiwi6.com/file/yskxcvafpf))
1992-93 - Amano, Masamichi: Giant Robo - Theme of Giant Robo (Episode 2) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CX5bEOVDJpk&feature=youtu.be&t=43)
1999 - Kanno, Yoko: Turn A Gundam - Drum Head (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0lI2xQLSYA&feature=youtu.be&t=55)

Damn.

Seeing the OP of this thread reminds me of the days when rapidshare was the shit. Now it's just plain shit :(

Considering how dead it is, I'd say by now RS is more akin to fertilizer.

As for the subject, I'd say Ginrei of Arabia is more an hommage to Lawrence of arabia, as the both the composition and orchestration are very slightly different.

No excuses for "Is Paris Burning", although I doubt many people outside hardcore classical score fans would know about it or even recognize the piece. and it messhes well with the rest. and it's not as if Amano had pulled a Tyler Bates.

As LOADED with plagiarism as these scores may be - They're just so much fun! Big, bold, unabashedly symphonic fireworks all arounds. Thanks for sharing these!

Amano might jut be Japan's answer to Horner, supplanting even Naoki Sato as the most fun to "Spot the Overt Influence" game with...

can we not think of these as plagiarism and more like Homages?

Some of them ARE clearly homages; Ginrei Of Arabia, for example. The piece was written for a scene that deliberately evokes Lawrence of Arabia for comic effect, and consciously used elements from that famous theme in a cue that expertly re-imagines Jarre's melody in Amano's own style, even going as far as to intermingle fragments of music from elsewhere in Giant Robo, for the obvious purpose of making a musical joke. It's a wink from Amano, just as the scene is a wink from the producers of the anime.

Other examples; lifting the entire main title theme from 1960s WWII movie, and using it as one of your principal melodies in a Sci-Fi adventure series twenty years later... is clearly, and obviously, not a homage - it's Amano taking an existing piece of music he likes because he couldn't be bothered to come up with something original, tried to come up with something original but couldn't get the mood right, or ran out of time. Change a few notes around, and hope nobody notices. That's about the same of it.

(Giant Robo's two principal melodies are both lifted wholesale from other scores; one French ("Is Paris Burning?" 1966, by Maurice Jarre) and one American ("North and South", a 1985 mini-series about the American civil war, by Bill Conti) - it's not subtle, it's not being done to demonstrate affection for or respect towards the original composers or their work. They are both textbook examples of plagiarism.)

Throughout the seven main GR scores and the additional OVA scores, there are countless further examples - and you really need to consider these facts in the context of Amano's career which has been largely defined by his orchestral music that brazenly and frequently rips off both himself (most hilariously, a cue that underscored a hardcore gay sex scene in 1990s Hentai "Boys Legend" turning up almost unchanged as the finale cue for Battle Royale 2) and other composers. Off the top of my head pinching Klendathu Drop (ALL of it) from Basil Poledouris' Starship Troopers, also for Battle Royale 2, being one of the most shocking.

I love the scores and I love Amano, but let's call a spade a spade. As far as the Japanese composers known for their orchestral music (my area of expertise) Amano and Yoko Kanno are the big two.

It's a shame, but the music's excellent... and in any case, these scores are twenty years old now. What are we supposed to do about it, but try to put Amano's "inspiration" out of our heads and just enjoy them for what they are; larger than life, shamelessly grand symphonic scores - fine examples of the craft that remain the yardstick at which Japanese orchestral film scores are judged? :)

So, don't expect the quality of concert video. The videos occasionally show noises which must be in the source. Most performances are not complete. There's no narration, but sometimes Japanese text explains the date, the title of the music being played. Some tunes are shown with the accompanying scenes in a small window. Mostly it's just the musicians performing, Amano conducting. No interviews with anyone. But occasionally you see interactions between Amano and musicians, engineers at work, and a little bit of views of Warsaw."
